Aibu to ask you to spare a thought for those who are flooded.

We have lots of localised floods that are stopping our plans to visit family today.
A small problem compared to those having to leave their homes and the poor kids who can't just play with their toys.

Please check AA route planner if you are in NW as there are many routes and areas with closed roads. Our trip was only 5 miles but no way can we find a way through.

East Lancs is closed and M6 has part closures.

Skipton jas localised flooding and manu roads round it are blocked/closed.

It's awful that people in Lancs are being evacuated but heartwarming to see everyone rallying round.

I've been so stupidly busy and have neglected a lot of forecasting recently but would it be handy for people if I give you a heads up as to upcoming weather systems on this thread (given Im strictly amateur)? I don't want to increase anxiety, but it might be helpful for some.

I'm originally from the Skipton area. I still have friends and family who live in the surrounding area. It seems to be really bad. Haworth and Bingley are flooded, and the main Skipton road is closed at Kildwick.

I visited my sister 2 weeks ago, and the river was pretty high - it is worse now. Their garden shed has been washed away and the nearby bridge is pretty much under (Ireland Bridge in Bingley).

Also ribble valley here - agree local facebook pages very helpful. We are ok but Whalley is badly flooded again. The response seems a lot better more organised than 2 weeks ago. We have a lake at the top of the road and the surrounding areas are so wet there is no where for the water to go. Fingers crossed the worse is over.

This is the A5 here in North Wales and lots of roads are closed. Villages are cut off.

bigbluebus hope you can get to Bangor tomorrow. My daughter couldn't get to work there today and had to turn back as the road was flooded up to the windows.

I'm at the top of Baildon/Saltaire in WY and every route out of baildon in the south direction seems to be cut off...

We're not even in the warning area (NE and it's pissed down solidly for 24 hours, now). Went out, this morning and there was a lot of surface water with some roads partially blocked.

Nothing compared with what's going on in some places, though. Horrible, horrible weather :(

kogasa I'm at the top of Baildon too. We must live very close! Meant to be driving down to Notts tomorrow and a friend is booked on a train from Shipley - Leeds - Manchester but not sure if we can even get out of Baildon at the moment!

Eek. I see the M62 near Manchester has had to be closed because it's collapsed into a big sinkhole. That's going to be a big one to fix.

kogasa felix I'm in Ilkley - we're cut off. All roads closed and no trains. DH and I just went out for a walk and the river is over the bridge at Ben Rhydding.

Report
FelixFelix · 26/12/2015 16:55

Carabos it's awful isn't it! I read that all ways in and out of Ilkley are closed so you're essentially cut off. Hope you are all safe.

We flooded in 2012 and it was terrible. Three foot of water in the house. The water was so dirty and stank and then left an inch of silt and gunk behind. The renovators came in and had to remove all the floorboards and chip the plaster off the walls. We fell ill with a gastric infection due to the filth and the GP just laughed when I asked if we were at risk of leptospirosis Sad of course all your stuff gets ruined and stinks, so it all has to be thrown out. You have to pile it up outside so that the loss adjuster can come and see it. You have to take photos and make lists of what has been lost.

Thieves came round and took the stuff from people's gardens - we hid ours in the back area. We remained in our house and just lived upstairs. We'd chase the thieves away when they came at night. The council didn't give a shite and just left us to it Hmm

It takes weeks to dry the house out and months of renovations after that. It's a really miserable and stressful process. Then, you sit around waiting until it happens again. You're stressed every time it rains heavily or persistently. You can't sell your house and insurance goes through the roof. You feel trapped and your house is never your home again. It's just a hated liability no matter how nice you make it, it all feels temporary and fragile and you end up resenting it.

I feel so sorry for the flooded people as it's the winter which makes things ten times harder Sad I really hope the government helps those communities who are affected. It'll be a year before they're back to 'normal'.

I'm in West Yorks too, I'm totally shocked about the floods locally, I've never seen anything like it.
We nipped out for nappies earlier, planned to go to Aldi in Bingley it was shut so went on to Keighley, Marley stadium pitches are completely flooded, the sides of the bypasses are like lakes, and Bradford and Bingley rugby club pitches are completely under water. Some houses on Wagon Lane had water covering their entire gardens and very nearly covering the bottom of their doors, if the rain doesn't stop, I don't think they'll avoid being flooded, it really is so sad. I can't imagine how they're feeling.
The pictures I've seen on FB and what I've seen myself while out has shocked me, seeing places you go so regularly looking like that.
Flooding at any time of year is terrible but at Christmas it's just really upsetting what people must be going through.
