flooding.

Aibu to ask you to spare a thought for those who are flooded.

We have lots of localised floods that are stopping our plans to visit family today.
A small problem compared to those having to leave their homes and the poor kids who can't just play with their toys.

Please check AA route planner if you are in NW as there are many routes and areas with closed roads. Our trip was only 5 miles but no way can we find a way through.

East Lancs is closed and M6 has part closures.

It's scary that either of those warnings are needed - I have seen both though - where does common sense come into it? I have deliberately not gone out today to avoid getting in an avoidable position.

"Does anybody know the best way to offer a little financial help to those worse affected?"

You'll either have to find a local initiative (try googling the local newspapers?) or consider donating to an organisation like the Britush Red Cross: www.redcross.org.uk/Tags/National-Floods-Appeal

ouryve I was just asking, its very difficult to tell with these reports if 50'000 or 50 are affected. I clearly gave my sympathy and said one is one too many.

Hopefully everyone is insured and I have heard on the news that the rain is stopping.

Do they need any man power on the ground to help with the cleanup? I'm unemployed so can't offer money, but can my time.

Rain has started again here in Bury. It's really coming down at the moment

Bramble someone on the local buy and sell site said hollins hill was clear around 2 hours ago so should be fine. The road next to the retail park is flooded in guiseley but I think it might be clear by tomorrow as its just pooled water rather than a river overflowing etc. You're probably best coming up the M1, then going on Stanningley bypass through to Guiseley then down Hollins Hill. I wouldn't come through Bradford and try and get through Baildon that way.

Going to keep an eye on the reports. BikeRunSki Hadn't thought to check EA, imagine you are all very busy so thanks to you and your colleagues.

A lot of people in Hebden Bridge don't have insurance cover for flooding, they can't get it after the 2012 flooding.

My friends and family have all been flooded out...my sister doesn't have flood cover.

donge hope you're not flooded , I'm just down the road in Radcliffe , it's not looking good for us 😥

It doesn't help the people affected this month but I heard on the radio recently that insurance premiums for flood-prone areas are going to be reduced - the rest of us will pay more m, but it will make it affordable again for those who live in the most vulnerable areas, which is a good thing

Will look for a link...

Didn't realise how many people live so near me, at least two in my town! I am hoping for improvement overnight as it stopped raining a few hours ago. I'm lucky that only social plans are affected. It looks awful in many places, pictures of Shipley are unbelievable.

\link{http://www.theguardian.com/money/2014/feb/18/flood-re-home-insurance-questions-answered\premiums will be capped} (but this only applies to flood damage, not any other risks, & only in certain pre-specified areas. But it's a start...)

Interesting that new-builds since 2009 won't be covered 'to disincentivise building on flood plains'

That'll be too late for some Sad

Pictures of Bingley are similar. The bypass is flooded. Everything round Ireland Bridge is flooded (including the electricity substation).

My extended family are in Beaumaris. The moat has flooded?! Shock I've never heard of that before.

Donge, it sounds terrible. Look after yourself.

Ellen Someone on my facebook was saying the moat has overflowed, they have the street closed, but said the houses weren't underwater. But it's a very high tide tonight.
Fingers crossed.
I just saw some pictures from Manchester area, it looks really bad there too.

finest Ive been talking about it for a few days in the weather section. A rather nasty pair of lows are currently modelled running up the western side of the uk. Gusts to 80mph are forecast but Im more concerned about further flooding, a lot of rain is shown esp on 30th

Can anybody in Halifax tell me if I can drive into town from the M62 via Salterhebble? It's the only way I know, need to go to Richmond Close police HQ for work tommorow.

Vikingvolva
I know two men who did this recently and when I pointed out they're childish ness seemed to think I was bu!
Have also witnessed car going around a flood / road closed sign when walking the dog only to watch their car disappear in about 3- 4 ft of water! Bet they don't do that again. Police are right to feel tetchy because these cars then get left and cause obstruction to emergency services and if water deep enough float down causing damage. Takes ages before cleared ( even after water drained blocking bridge ) as the services are at breaking point.
Whilst I walked down to see if there was any access out of village a few weeks ago I did not drive around the city and following day off to sightsee in the countryside as a wheeze like the two pratts in our local. You and I might not be idiots but believe me there are plenty of them.

Squinkies, yes I've just read about it on the BBC website. I have half a dozen octogenarian aunts and uncles living in Beaumaris, but they are mostly in the council estate so higher up than the castle. Will ring them soon. Luckily I still have a few cousins living nearby.

It makes it very real. Thinking of you all affected.

Preston, Lancs here. The river Ribble has burst its banks in some areas and looking very precarious in others. Lots of local flooding and abandoned vehicles. We are ok, but you could sail a dinghy on the fields around us.
