Mother wants to bring a chicken to my vegetarian Christmas dinner

That's kind of it in a nutshell. We've invited 10 people over for Christmas dinner including my mother. We're veggies and I've put together a lovely Scandi veggie menu. She's told me she's bringing a chicken and I've said please don't. Firstly because we're veggie and I don't really want a dead bird on the table and secondly I can't see why she can't last a few hours without meat.

My relationship with her is very strained this year, she's been pretty horrible to me and I'm getting to the end of my tether.

AIBU to tell her not to bring meat or stay at home? She could always come over after lunch if she's going to insist.

Shuddering here at the idea of meat plates in dishwasher.

My God Fafoutis putting plates in the bin because meat has been on them is ridiculous. Dishwashers (or boiling hot water and fairy) would remove any traces ... why just why?

You talk as if us meat eaters are cannibals. Please don't say "we may as well be"

shows how faf is trying to take the high ground but failing I would supposed when she happens upon a pizza express she dosent bring her own plates or a wedding no she dosent fucking ridiculous she gets the prize I think

She eats the veggie meal knowing the plates have been washed

Roussette · 18/12/2015 20:50

Why do you shudder? Curious.

To me... it means you need some help for feeling like this. I don't shudder over anything food wise. I don't like offal at all, but I don't shudder

Shuddering over something like meat shock horror must make people feel uncomfortable.

FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 20:50

I don't want the prize thanks. Not aiming for moral high ground either. It is just a different way of seeing things to yours.

I don't go out to eat. It is the forks that bother me more than the plates actually.

Roussette · 18/12/2015 20:55

So you never go out to eat????

That's just so sad, you don't know what you're missing. This is vegetarianism taken to the extreme and I would call it food issues that you need help with and is actually life limiting because you can't avoid 95% of the population who might eat near you.

voddiekeepsmesane · 18/12/2015 20:56

ok FaFoutis I would say that you are more obsessive than any veggie I know ...and I know a few.

You have issues. I hate offal but would not obsess over plates or cutlery Hmm

Timri · 18/12/2015 20:57

Sounds more like OCD than a general trait of vegetarians to me?!?

SuburbanRhonda · 18/12/2015 20:59

Sounds more like OCD than a general trait of vegetarians to me?!?

Couldn't agree more.

Dumbledoresgirl · 18/12/2015 21:02

Never mind the plates and the forks. What about other people's hands? Do you never shake anyone's hand? Has it not occurred to you that that very hand might have been holding a meat product in the last few hours?

FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 21:02

Not OCD, I'm a lazy slattern.

Just saying that some vegetarians do not see meat in the same way that meat eaters do.

(I'm quite happy to avoid 95% of the population too.)

Dumbledoresgirl · 18/12/2015 21:04

And is anyone else hearing about vegetarian wine for the first time in this thread?

voddiekeepsmesane · 18/12/2015 21:06

FaFoutis yes OCD your actions are not typical of a normal vegetarian/vegan in my mind they are attuned to comparing a normal religious person with Westboro Baptist Church. There is normal and there is OTT

FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 21:07

God, don't make me think about the hands. Unlikely to have held actual meat though, maybe pastry or bread with meat in, which is bad enough.

I have never kissed a man who eats meat either. (That is assuming they were telling the truth.) This was easy enough because when I was single I was a hippy who lived in a van so it was lentils for miles around.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2015 21:07

Some vegetarians keep strict veggie kitchens, just like some Orthodox Jews keep strict kosher kitchens.
Ovens, utensils, pots, pans, dishwashers, even bins must forever remain pure.

I wouldn't bring a bacon sarnie into a Jewish / Muslim / Buddhist / vegetarian household, no matter how important it is for my breakfast.
That would offend my host too much.

As a guest, I follow the house rules:

  • take off / keep on shoes
  • bow my head if my host says Grace / join in a Jedi Warrior chant .... I eat any animal that can't run faster than me (but won't eat its genitals) and I have no invisible friends.
FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 21:09

BigChoc you sound like a lovely guest.

janethegirl2 · 18/12/2015 21:10

Most meat eaters will have handled raw meat with their hands. When I get meat out the wrapping, I will hold it, possibly dry it with kitchen roll then season it before cooking.

I certainly will not use tongs Grin

GingerIvy · 18/12/2015 21:15

join in a Jedi Warrior chant

Have you had much call for that? Grin

Dumbledoresgirl · 18/12/2015 21:15

I hate to disillusion you, but most meat eaters handle meat without any thought. Cooked and raw. Some don't even wash their hands after handling raw meat!

And even if you don't shake their hands or kiss their lips, you certainly touch things that they have touched with their meaty paws.

You really need to think about washing plates that have been in contact with meat.

FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 21:17

Dumbledore some wines have animal products in because they are used as finings. To make the wine clear. Increasing amount of wine is vegetarian these days.

FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 21:18

The plate meat thing is a red herring since I have never owned a meat plate. No meat in my house, my plates are pure.

Roussette · 18/12/2015 21:19

Fafou there is no way you can avoid the what you infer as contamination of meat.

Do you have any friends who eat meat or do you judge them for doing so and only associate with vegetarians?

If so, you are missing a lot of worthy people in life, I promise you.

Roussette · 18/12/2015 21:20

God I'd love to come to your house and eat a meat 'n tater pie on a plate of yours. It would be very satisfying. I would - of course - wash it up after.

FaFoutis · 18/12/2015 21:23

Yes, have lots of meaty friends, I don't judge anyone. Tater 'n tater pie in my house. Wash your hands before you come.

Timri · 18/12/2015 21:29

I quite like your description of it as 'meat plate'.

ghostspirit · 18/12/2015 21:35

when i was a kid i went through a stage of being a vegi/vegan... someone pointed out i was wearing leather shoes Blush
