Halal meat

This is not supposed to cause conflict but I am genuinely confused as to why it's controversial anymore?

People keep talking about how it's cruel but I know in this country all animals have to be stunned in order to be killed whether they are halal or not.

So what am I missing? Why do people keep boycotting it?

^ I didn't explain that very well, hope it makes sense.

I eat kosher meat despite the fact it is about 3 times the price as I believe it is more ethical - meat is not kosher if it is diseased etc so the animals are well looked-after and the supply chain is carefully monitored all the way along so there is zero chance of actually eating horse etc.

No, I'm not an animal rights activist . . . I have changed in 45 years but not that much.

But I stand by human rights.

It's certainly possible to be opposed to halal or shechita but not be an Islamophobe or an anti-Semite. But you are - like it or lump it - giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

In truth, if animals have rights eating them at all must be in breach of those rights; but they haven't, and the question is whether eating them is in breach of our duties to them. Since many other species eat other species I don't buy that idea.

I would prefer to concentrate on how meat-animals live their lives than on the last few moments - which are going to be nasty however they are slaughtered - which is why I am more concerned with their living conditions; they can be improved without interfering with anyone's right to religious freedom.
