Bible from school

DS goes to a standard secondary (not a religious school), he came home last week with a bible.

I remember we got them when we were kids but I had forgotten thought we had moved on since then

DS doesn't believe in God, his choice and nothing to do with us. But I'm just really shocked and irritated at this act, presumably an attempt to spread the word and indoctrinate kids into organised religion.

I am very, very anti organised religion right now, following a historical abuse case involving our family which has just been through the court and involved a vicar, so very aware that I'm probably oversensitive.

Is it me? AIBU?

Hmm right back at ya....

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/12/2015 18:24

So no-one is prepared to have a go at answering how heaven works when Jews, Christians and Muslims are all apparently worshiping the same god? Supplementary question, say your family had been Jews prior to Jesus saving everybody and then you became a Christian and died. When you go to heaven to meet all your loved ones, are you allowed to fraternise or not?

itsmine - yes, seriously - I asked earlier. The original worshipers of the god that christians worship now were Jews, then came Christianity so what happens? And then of course Muslims worship the same god but their heaven is filled with virgins (of whatever religion I am not sure). So, technically the current Jews and Christians disagree, so is their heaven split as they apparently believe in the same god, but obviously, prior to christianity, jews and christians did not disagree as Christians didn't exist. So does current heaven as Christians see it consist of only Christians or Christians plus Jews who existed prior to christianity or what?

Well I'd have thought your average Christian must know how it works itsmine presumably that's the goal that they are working to, to gain entry to heaven, surely they must have thought about what that means? I can't be the only one that wonders how that is handled within the bounds of a religious believe can I?

That's why I can never have a belief and a faith as I can see that it has more holes than a tramps vest and it must take a strength of character I clearly don't posses to ignore all that and continue to believe.

"When it comes to schools in the UK and the availability and choice of faith and non faith schools, no I can't get depressed about that."

No, you wouldn't would you? What with being on the side that has the choice of 100%...........

bestfurchinchilla you do know that 'Christmas' was originally a pagan festival. As was Easter. Christians just hijacked it with a silly story

Sallyingforth · 15/12/2015 19:26

Here we go again... :(

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/12/2015 20:07

I'm making no secret of the fact that I think it's all hogwash, I've also said that what people want to worship in the comfort of their own home and in their own places of worship is absolutely up to them. I disagree that religion should have any place in education or the running of the country. I object to Sharia law too, not just christians influence on UK laws. I've also said I can understand that people find comfort in it. However I struggle as to how perfectly intelligent people can continue to believe in the face of all the evidence to the contrary. There must be something I am missing. My comments re the hospital again though maybe not the most open, do have a basis is question. If we take it that at least 50% of Drs and medical staff are not Christians and many have no religious beliefs, how is it that they are healing the sick? Science or do christians/other religions believe that are they unwitting instruments of god regardless of whether they believe or not? I asked a perfectly reasonable question about something that has puzzled me and no-one apart from yourself (thank you) has chosen to acknowledge or attempt to answer.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 15/12/2015 21:10

my you could invest 20 dollars in this collection of theological papers if you want to explore the question of whether Jews, Christians and Muslims worship the same God or not.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 15/12/2015 21:23

Bertrand as I understand it, C of E schools are a 'hangover' (that's the wrong word but I can't think of the right one) caused by the fact that it was the Church which founded universal education in England and paid for the buildings, the land and the staff.

If the majority of people want secular education, should the church donate those assets and retreat from the provision of education in England? or should the church expect to be bought out?

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/12/2015 21:32

Nah, you're alright Imust I am interested, but I am more interested in the fact that none of the christians on the thread even wanted to give it a stab.

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/12/2015 21:52

Myother, I know how you feel. I struggle when seemly intelligent people say that science and religion are incompatible in the face of all the evidence to the contrary.

thebestfurchinchilla · 15/12/2015 22:01

Faith is just that, faith without proof.

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/12/2015 22:07

Dione. If I struggle to believe that the pope believes, you aren't going to convince me that eminent scientists aren't just playing a game.

exaltedwombat · 15/12/2015 22:07

I was handed a bible at school (many years ago). I didn't feel in the slightest indoctrinated.

purplehazed · 15/12/2015 22:25

Possibly because it is constantly rammed down our throats, because it is the root of most conflict in the world and it continues to occupy a place in society that it doesn't deserve.
The biggest conflict in the world right now certainly isn't with Christianity.

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/12/2015 22:26

out of context purple that comment was about religion in general.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 15/12/2015 22:52

my perhaps we don't want to give it a stab because we aren't theologians. You said it was a serious question so I have pointed you to a serious, scholarly resource addressing the point you raised.

I think your statement that all gods are the same is pantheism, which is a heresy, but I'm not certain enough to debate with you.

As a Christian I believe that belief in Jesus and acceptance of him as my personal saviour is what is required for eternal life. I can't comment on hat Jews and Muslims belive.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 15/12/2015 22:53

what

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 15/12/2015 22:58

not hat.

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/12/2015 23:04

Imust, but the old testament god is surely the same as the new testament god? The old testament is still part of Christianity as far as I understand, certainly you still include it in services etc and we got at Sunday School as children. All the people are Jews as was Jesus. Jews don't believe that Jesus was the son of god and that's therefore where the split came. Muslims follow the prophet Mohammad rather than the prophet Jesus so still the same god. If it's heresay then so be it, but I don't think what I am saying is wrong but I thought an active christian would be better placed to know. So, the point being that I think people are saying they have faith and a belief without actually questioning what it is they are following. I don't think that's right in any walk of life , it's questioning and querying that strengthens your convictions as to whether something is right or not so if I was starting up a religion (not that i would), i'd want people to ask questions as then I'd know that if they still believed after those were answered , that they had a true belief and were not just going with the flow. I have the same issue with politics tbf.
