To throw away ugly Xmas cards I receive?

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 11:48

Some of the Xmas cards we've received this year are really horrible, gaudy, cheap looking things.

I don't want ugly cards on display in my house so I want to just keep the nice ones that fit with my colour scheme.

DH said he doesn't care and also doesn't want ugly cards up.

My friend came around today and was horrified by the idea that I wouldn't display every card we get, no matter how ugly.

So WIBU to dump all of the cards I don't like? We don't have any visitors over Xmas so no risk of offending anyone by this if they come and don't see their card up.

the cards are always part of my decor, family ones are blutacked to the fireplace, the others get stuck to picture frames, doors and windows.

I have a theme on my tree, but its usually red/gold.

I never throw cards away until the decs come down!

elQuintoConyo · 11/12/2015 12:52

Let's see... I send a card to a friend in USA and his mum, she's always touched to get one; a close relative in Australia (whose kids love cards too); Great GM, GreatAunt+Uncle, some friends who have emigrated back to UK; my parents (we're not in UK).

And a couple of other people.

Is it such a faux pas these days to send cards? But not to have a white tree? I have been eyeing up a purple 6 footer in my local Chinese €1 shop... VERY TEMPTED Grin

Oh, and we have a smiley-faced log that will shit gifts on Christmas Eve when DS hits it with a stick, while singing a song. Some not-to-your-taste cards are small fry!

squoosh · 11/12/2015 12:53

People who obsess over their home's 'colour scheme' tend to have a very bland taste in decor.

hellsbellsmelons · 11/12/2015 12:53

LOL Maryz that is exactly what I wanted post! Grin

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 11/12/2015 12:57

We visited dsis and her dh one year - with our dses who were about 3, 5, and 7 at the time.

Their tree was perfectly coordinated - two sizes of bauble, in silver, gold and red, and candle holders with real candles - also silver, gold and red.

As a Special Treat, they lit the candles - and then my bil spent the rest of the afternoon stressing about the boys going anywhere near the tree - utterly ignoring the fact that three small boys were not going to just sit still and in silence, whilst the grown-ups chatted. You could see him tense up every time they moved - dh had to take them outside to run round on the green, to burn off some of their energy, before BIL spontaneously combusted.

At the end of the afternoon, he blew out all the candles - the boys were so disappointed that they didn't get to blow out a single one!

Badders123 · 11/12/2015 12:58

I agree squoosh.
Tends to be a lot of magnolia (or dusted pewter or whatever the hell they call magnolia now) no very little in the way of originality.

elQuintoConyo · 11/12/2015 12:58

Here he is, under a blanket to keep him warm. He has a small cardboard loo roll friend for company. DS has given him some food - he must be well-fed and watered for the duration as you need a really good gift-poo.

Merry Christmas.

fruit, yes!

needastrongone · 11/12/2015 12:59

badders Our tree is exactly the same, we are eclectic Smile

OP - I am just listening to a programme about climate change. What do you do with the unwanted decorations every 3 years when you change them? I am not sure I could reconcile myself to that level of waste to be honest, whatever the cost. Maybe that's just me.

squoosh · 11/12/2015 12:59

'sister and best friend do wrap my gifts in holly themed paper to accommodate my decor. It's all in fun.'

Oh yes. Japes aplenty chez LeaLander I'm sure.

I'm picturing your sister and best friend speaking to each other in hushed, frantic tones

'b...b....bu...for the love of God please make sure you use holly wrapping paper. Remember the time you brought presents wrapped in robin paper when she had the snowman theme and she got so angry that she stripped naked and ran down the street screeching'.

DinosaursRoar · 11/12/2015 13:00

My "colour scheme" is red and gold, so can be added to most years! Although we've started a tradition of the DCs going in the october half term and decorating some pottery baubles which get fired and look very nice when done, we currently have 6, so evenutally, this will take over the tree...

For cards, I don't put them up on the fireplace anymore, I stick some ribbon to the top of on of the doors then staple the cards to it. Ugly cards go on the hall side of the door, pretty ones on the living room or dining room side... Grin

This year we're only sending cards the DCs designed - so white background and hand print trees or robins. (had them printed, didn't want to face making 40+ cards with them, one design each was enough).

BertieBotts · 11/12/2015 13:00

Nobody our age (mid 20s) does Christmas cards, the only ones I have are from older relatives.

No thanks to colour-coordinated tree! Ours is coordinated with "glitter" Grin

abbieanders · 11/12/2015 13:01

Yes, the hideous good taste of the show house designer.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/12/2015 13:02

It's a bit odd but if no one will know, no harm done.

For me the joy of Christmas decorations and cards is in the memories and connections with people. I love our dated, multi colored bauble fest because of the memories. We still have baubles belonging to dh's mum that he had off his mum long before we met 20 years ago. His parents are both gone now so it's nice to feel that connection at Christmas.

I love the tat the dses made too. I adore gaudy Christmas trees!

As for cards, just be thankful you aren't getting those awful e cards! I've had more e cards than actual cards this year. Of the 3 cards that have arrived, one wasn't for us and one is from the owners of a holiday cottage we stayed in 2 years agoGrin

JohnCusacksWife · 11/12/2015 13:02

I don't display cards either OP. Not because they clash with my colour scheme (I don't have one) but because I cant stand the clutter. They sit in a big pile in the kitchen and then go straight into the recycling bin after xmas.

needastrongone Last time we overhauled the tree, we gave DH's brother the decorations for some wall art thing he did in his back garden. Otherwise, I take them to the RSPCA shop.

Themed trees look like they should be sitting in the foyer of a corporate HQ. I like a tree that's higgledy piggledy with lots of decorations.

Tinsel is the only thing I avoid.

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 13:06

John Oh yes, I should say it's not wholly about colour scheme but also about the fact I hate clutter. I guess this is kind of related to colour scheme because I always like just one or two colours at Christmas so it doesn't look cluttered. I know what I mean!

Maryz My kids have got their own trees to decorate in their rooms and most of their hand-made stuff goes to PILs who love all that.

abbieanders · 11/12/2015 13:06

O arrived at my theme this year by holding up decorations to six month old baby and buying the ones that made her little face light up with interest.

Bettercallsaul1 · 11/12/2015 13:06

I always stick to mainly red, gold and green when wrapping presents and decorating the tree, with the odd bit of silver and the right shade of blue thrown in for variety. (Not a "cold", icy blue!) Don't like purple or pink too much.

It always distresses me when I can't find "my" colours in the shops because this year's colour scheme is teal/white or whatever! Green wrapping paper, in particular, is often difficult to find. When I find a nice one, I stock up for future years.

RiverTam · 11/12/2015 13:06

If you not prepared to tell people that you think their cards are ugly and your ditching them, then you know full well that you are being a total twat. But then I tend to think that anyone who puts their colour scheme bullshit front and centre is a twat.

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 13:07

Trees with higgledy piggledy decorations look like they should be sitting in the foyer of an old folks home.

Personal taste though innit

So your kid presents you with a decoration they've made in school and you say 'put it in your room or give it to Granny'.

How festive!
