Donald Trump thinks there should be a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S.

Beeb news here.

OP posts:
AnthonyBlanche · 10/12/2015 23:05

I am no fan of Trump, and am appalled at what he was allowed to do in Aberdeen (though that is the Scottish governments fault for overturning the local planning decision), but on what possible grounds do people think he could be banned from entering the UK?

Does it also not strike anyone as slightly ironic that people are signing a petition to ban someone from this country because that person has said he wants to ban people from his country? Trump is an arse, but free speech anyone?

AnthonyBlanche · 10/12/2015 23:08

Talkin what has changed re the electoral roll? I'm sure i filled in a form recently to confirm household names on roll. Is the process different to previous years? I didn't notice...perhaps I'm just unobservant!

ComposHatComesBack · 10/12/2015 23:35

Claig are you hopelessly in love with 'former trump aide Roger Stone'? You've mentioned him in at least six posts and seem to have conferred almost soothsayer like status on him. It is hardly surprising that a Trump ally and someone formerly on his payroll will give a glowing testimony and echo his views now is it?

PigletJohn · 10/12/2015 23:46

"slightly ironic"

And deliberately so.

We all know the govt will ignore and gloss over the petition, which will be totally ineffectual, so it is no more than an expression of irritation with a world-class twat.

Half a million sigs so far.

NBC/WSJ poll on Trump's proposal

'Claig are you hopelessly in love with 'former trump aide Roger Stone'?'

I must admit, I do like him. The reason I mention him is because lots of posters have probably never heard of him and if you are interested in US politics which will affect everyone of us, you should definitely listen to what he says because then you will understand how serious this election is, how dirty it will get and why Trump is such a threat to the Establishment and why he intends to take them down. The US is a great, amazing country with real freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. US politics is the real deal and no holds are barred or punches are spared, it is real, open and raw and Roger Stone is a former Republican operative who has been in the thick of it for over 30 years. If you want to understand what is at stake and why Trump is for real, don't miss listening to Stone because this election is a gargantuan battle that is not phony that is not Oxbridge that is not "all in it together". This is the real deal and everyone in the world will be affected.

claig · 10/12/2015 23:57

Hillary is still the favourite with the bookies, but Trump's odds have been slashed and bookies are biting their nails at the potential losses if Trump wins. What the bookies fear is nothing to what the Establishment and the puppets fear if Trump wins. Trump said on O'Reilly's "Factor" last night "that nothing like this [his campaign] has ever been seen before" and he wasn't lying. Roger Stone breaks down what is at stake and why Trump intends to "make America great again". If Trump makes it, he will make Europe great again too.

SenecaFalls · 11/12/2015 00:01

Well, if he becomes president I am moving to Canada. Actually that may not be far enough. How hard is it for an American to immigrate to Scotland?

GiddyOnZackHunt · 11/12/2015 00:03

I still think that the US are less likely to vote for a woman than any man and that worries me.

claig · 11/12/2015 00:08

SenecaFalls, Trump is not a "career politician", he is not bought and paid for, he is not a puppet for the lobbyists, Trump is going to change America and help the American people. Stone is right behind him and Stone explains why it is such an important election and why Trump is serious and intends to win. They are not laughing in the Establishment offices, their lights are burning bright because "nothing like this has ever happened before".

Here is Pat Buchanan, former Nixon speechwriter and former Republican Presidential candidate

Can Trump Be Stopped?
...
The lights are burning late tonight in the suites of the establishment tonight. For not since Sen. Barry Goldwater won the California primary in 1964 have their prospects appeared so grim."

buchanan.org/blog/can-trump-be-stopped-124186

This is the real deal which is why every teenage whizzkid from Oxbridge and Harvard has been called in to try and stop Trump and save the Establishment.

claig · 11/12/2015 00:12

'I still think that the US are less likely to vote for a woman than any man and that worries me.'

Listen to Roger Stone on Hillary and Bill and the Bushes. It is going to be one hellluva dirty election and Trump will come out swinging and spilling lots of beans. Stone said "Trump can't be bullied, he can't be bought and he is fearless". We have never seen an election like this and we probably never will again. Trump is going to defeat the Establishment.

pilpiloni · 11/12/2015 01:31

I wouldn't want my president to be fearless. That is not a good character trait for a president.

Want2bSupermum · 11/12/2015 02:21

Flip I think people in the UK are signing it thinking it will have an influence in the US. It won't. The vast majority of people here don't care what others think of them. It is about what is best for them as in the US, not the world. This is what I mean by the mindset here in the US is so very different in the UK. Rarely does the average voter in the UK only think about what is best for the UK. It is drilled into us to be considerate of others. The vast majority of Americans have not been educated to think that way.

Anyway it is a long time between now and the primaries. So much can happen!

Dipankrispaneven · 11/12/2015 07:00

Trump's problem is that commercial interests won't support him: they won't want a situation where their business interests in Muslim countries are closed down and they lose a large slice of their export market. Trump may be rich, but he can't outweigh the combined means of the big corporations.

flippinada · 11/12/2015 07:17

Want2 do you really think that's the case, and if so, why?

That's a genuine question, I'm not being snide!

SettlinginNicely · 11/12/2015 10:48

Since he made his ridiculous suggestion, his poll rating have gone up with Republican voters. At the moment, these are the people he is trying to woo. If he does get the nomination, he will have to pivot, and pivot hard to win the presidency. Pleasing the Republican base is very different from pleasing the broad American electorate.

I think banning Trump from Britain is fatuous and childish. Britain has wined dined and feted for more odious people than Trump. So far, Trump has said some embarrassing things. Meanwhile we have rolled out the red carpet for people who have actually done some horrible things. We have our own problems here that we should focus on, rather than trying to self-righteously interfere in another country's democratic process. I'll be gobsmacked if he is president next November. Instead of being rude and trying to stir things, perhaps it would be more productive to let the process grind along in the USA, and meanwhile spend our time trying to show some leadership in the migrant crisis here in Europe.

SettlinginNicely · 11/12/2015 10:56

I think this meme sums it up. The majority of Americans don't need to the British left to point out that DT is a jerk. He lacks conviction and is trying to say whatever he thinks the Republican base wants to hear. It's a tactic that only works in the short run.

...to think surely nobody will vote Donald Trump now?
Butkin1 · 11/12/2015 11:50

Latest betting:

Republican ticket - Marco Rubio 13/8 Donald Trump 11/4 Ted Cruz 9/2 Jeb Bush 10/1

Democratic ticket - Hillary Clinton 1/10 Bernie Sanders 8/1

President - Hillary Clinton 8/11 Marco Rubio 9/2 Donald Trump 8/1

Of course not surprising that Hillary is odds on given that she's almost certain to be on the ballot whereas still lots of fighting to happen amongst the Republicans.. Of course the weirdest part is they have to stab the guys in their own party first before they can get to Hillary !

flippinada · 11/12/2015 11:57

Why are people assuming that folk in the UK who've signed a petition saying they don't want DT in the UK are trying to tell the US what to do?

Genuinely interested to get to the bottom of this.

SettlinginNicely · 11/12/2015 12:05

Why are people assuming that folk in the UK who've signed a petition saying they don't want DT in the UK are trying to tell the US what to do?

Because it's silly to think that DT's presence in the UK is a real and immanent threat. People don't like him or his policies and want to make a point. I don't like him either, but there are plenty of points to be made closer to home without grandstanding.

flippinada · 11/12/2015 12:05

Settling Trump hasn't actually been banned from the UK (and the likelihood is he won't be). And yes, we have let awful people in. That doesn't mean we should just let awful person x in so we should we let in awful person y.

People are free not to sign the petition if they don't agree with the aim. It's somebody's opinion, not government policy.

SettlinginNicely · 11/12/2015 12:06

Agree. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion of DT. Same as I am allowed to have an opinion on people showboating with a petition.

flippinada · 11/12/2015 12:10

The petition isn't saying he's a threat, it's asking that he's banned because his comments amount to hate speech (I'm paraphrasing, you can read the text in the petition website).

People have been banned from entering the UK for similar, so there is a precedent.

RickRoll · 11/12/2015 12:13

Apparently the latest outrage is that he has suggested that there are more British Muslims fighting for ISIS than are in the British army.

The only problem with this outrage, is that it's true.

flippinada · 11/12/2015 12:13

Nobody is saying you can't Settling.

However, it's clearly struck a chord with many people as it now has over half a million signatures.

That doesn't mean anything will happen though.
