Donald Trump thinks there should be a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S.

Surely he's just the warm-up guy to make Bush and Rubio seem sane and conservative?

Brokenbiscuit · 08/12/2015 00:04

It is terrifying to think that the American electorate can even entertain the idea of trump as President. The reality simply doesn't bear thinking about!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 08/12/2015 00:08

That's a very good point 1Q84

I suppose in the end he'll be elected, or not, because of the backroom boys and his willingness to do as they say.

Will their finger be on the button though?

FixItUpChappie · 08/12/2015 00:08

That should be correct but I fear he's just galvanizing all racist, isolationist, uneducated, red/white and blue brainwashed morons together.

I anticipate a boost in the polls AngryShockSad

FixItUpChappie · 08/12/2015 00:10

Can you imagine being a balanced, liberal American right now? it must be frustrating beyond words.

My deepest sympathies to them Thanks

Want2bSupermum · 08/12/2015 00:13

The Trump campaign is fascinating to me purely because if a political candidate said any of the things he has said they would be laughed out of the room. Instead people nod in agreement to Trump.

There is a huge disconnect in the US between those running the country and those living in the country. Same thing is happening in the UK. Trump is not the answer IMO but others would far rather see him as president than Clinton.

I think Europeans have no idea how badly Hilary Clinton did as Secretary of State. Basically she was in charge of foreign relations during the Arab Spring and completly screwed up. She has proven to be Teflon coated regarding the inquiry into Benghazi. However the inquiry was seriously damaging to her candidacy. It's a shame because she was given an impossible job to do. She should have been given healthcare to reform, something she knew how to navigate.

Also what a lot of Europeans don't acknowledge is that of the Republican Party candidates Trump is the only one who isn't anti-abortion or a raving bible basher. It is shocking that he is doing so well. He is also anti war having stated that he would have Putin sort out the ME. All of this marks a major monumental shift in US politics for the GOP. I hope to see some more colourful GOP candidates in the future. Trump has got a lot of people thinking.

QuizteamBleakley · 08/12/2015 00:22

I clearly need to do some reading up (where to start?) It seemed crazy to me that he was galvanising support but I see what many of you are saying. Could he, even remotely have a real chance at becoming President?

ComposHatComesBack · 08/12/2015 00:23

He is also anti war having stated that he would have Putin sort out the ME

That has to be the oddest definition of 'anti war' I've ever heard. Isolationist, yes. But anti war?????

IPityThePontipines · 08/12/2015 00:30

I don't think, demographically, someone could be that bigoted and by US president.

It's not only Muslims he's insulted, he's previously said lots of nasty things about Mexicans and the Latino vote is huge.

IPityThePontipines · 08/12/2015 00:30

*be, not by.

goddessofsmallthings · 08/12/2015 00:32

This old article goes some way to explaining the comparative insularity of Americans:
edition.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/02/04/americans.travel.domestically/

The US media puts Trump ahead at the moment, but with 8 months to go before Cleveland there's time for his toupee to come off wagon to hit the rails.

annandale · 08/12/2015 00:35

I'm amazed that anyone thinks that a UK politician who said something similar wouldn't have a huge electoral following - does anyone listen to what people say on the street in this country, YouAintNoMuslimBruv aside? No doubt because Trump has said it, others will start saying similar things, slightly less bluntly in order to look 'moderate'.

Was listening to a discussion about Trump on the radio the other day and was alarmed to hear that he actually has very real potential to run for president.

The more of this type of fascist shit he comes out with, the more support he seems to gain. It's like an extreme version of what we saw in UK with UKIP.

Headmelt · 08/12/2015 01:08

He's bats mad, a complete nut! He said terrible stuff about the terrible tragedy in France Shock and his supporters cheered Shock. He wants everyone to carry guns around Hmm That should end well NOT!

LeaLeander · 08/12/2015 01:24

I'm humiliated, frustrated and frightened to be an American these days. Seriously looking into emigrating to Canada. Sigh. We aren't all potential Trump voters here but the notion that any would elect him or a tea party candidate is profoundly depressing.

Headmelt · 08/12/2015 02:00

Lea you have nothing to be embarrassed about. It is not your fault and it is outside of your control if he gets in other than if you're voting for him. Every County has a "Trump" whom their nation roll their eyes at.

ChristineDePisan · 08/12/2015 02:04

I agree with Eroica - he makes Jeb Bush look like a moderate

Although the liberal media enjoys mocking Trump, he is increasingly popular. You have to hope that the numbers fall in such a way that the Senate is able to play the same sort of role in a Bush presidency as it is currently in an Obama presidency (vetoing all the really big stuff), but I'm not sure whether that it really likely

TheNewStatesman · 08/12/2015 02:06

Hmmm... our own radical-right party (UKIP) didn't do very well at the ballot box the other day. And they are a lot less bonkers than Trump IMO.

Want2bSupermum · 08/12/2015 02:09

Compos You have to consider what he is saying from an American perspective. Trump saying he will not go to war but have Putin sort out he ME is what Americans consider 'anti-war'. It is a different way of thinking. Having lived here 10 years I am still discovering just how differently people think here.

Quiz If he wins the nomination for the Republican party I think he does have a good chance of winning against Hillary Clinton. So many people really don't like her and politics in America is generally won by wooing those who are undecided. Luckily here in NJ we are blue state so we are spared from the millions of political ads that run in other states. The Republicans have in the past left us alone as any money spent here is a waste and democrats know they have this state sealed so money spent on winning votes isn't a good investment. Trump transcends those lines. He is already being pally with our Governor, Chris Christie who shockingly is also a republican when you consider he accepted same sex marriage being legal. While I can't stand Christie the man knows how to transcend party lines in a very blue state.

overwhelmed34 · 08/12/2015 02:29

It's really shocking isn't it. I can't be the only one who thought 'making Muslims have id cards. Whatever next. Making Jews wear the star of David?! Oh wait..'

mimishimmi · 08/12/2015 02:29

All of these developments are terrifying for those who've been through fascism before. The Muslim immigration issue is just a strawman for the same banking/arms companies that have always indulged in this.

It's not just America, they want war throughout the entire Western world. Any grievances we have are because of their past actions ..

kickassangel · 08/12/2015 02:37

There is some speculation that he is being paraded around and will then withdraw. By which time everyone will be so relieved to see a moderate like Jed that they'll fall over themselves to vote for him.

Anyhoo, I live pretty close to one of the biggest Muslim communities outside of the middle east, right here in Michigan!

ImtheChristmasCarcass · 08/12/2015 03:02

At first I looked on Trump's campaign as a good joke, figuring he'd just implode in a few weeks. Now he scares the shit out of me. People on both sides of the divide are fed up with politics as usual, and Trump (who certainly is an excellent PR man) is playing the disaffected tea-party conservatives like violins.

Every time he says something spectacularly stupid or ignorant I think "OK, this is it, he can't survive this gaffe", and every time he rises in the polls. I fear for my country.
