To urge you all to buy a jar of coconut oil?

Some parts of this might be TMI, and I apologise in advance for that.

A few months ago, I had a boyfriend who had an unfortunate penis condition called balanitis, where it would get red, itchy and sore. The doctor prescribed him steroid cream and it did nothing to help, and in fact thinned the skin so much that his banjo string snapped Shock

I did some reading on the Internet, and found a forum saying someone had cured his balanitis with coconut oil. I suggested it to my bf and he gave it a go, his condition cleared up within a few days by applying coconut oil.

I bought a jar of it myself this week as it was on offer on Amazon. So far, I've tried it out on thrush...I woke up with a definite case of it, got a lump out of the jar (it's solid and melts on contact), ummmm inserted it, and hey presto, instant relief and no symptoms since.

Then yesterday I had a mega spot. Like the kind of spot that takes up half of your face and would normally take 3 weeks to heal. I applied coconut oil to it several times yesterday, and when I woke up this morning the spot had pretty much gone.

I've also been putting it on my hands and feet, where I get stress eczema, and it provides instant relief, and seems to be clearing it up.

Other things that it can apparently cure are nappy rash, impetigo, most kinds of infections (can be ingested if it's an internal thing), and loads more, do some googling.

Anyway, felt like I had to share. I'm well chuffed that for 6 quid I have a product that seems to deal with a lot of common health problems, and it actually works (and fast)!

How is a jar of coconut oil comparable with forever living?

PrincessMouse · 05/12/2015 15:20

Pre- workout, as in weights or cardio??

Garlic bad science or not I still love the stuff.... runs off to do some research on coconut oil and pre-workout Grin

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 05/12/2015 15:22

Deirdre - he is now an ex so the two are completely unrelated. It wasn't thrush he had, the doctor took swabs for it.

And I had a busy week, didn't have time to go to the doctor for a prescription, and didn't want to fork out £15 for some canesten at the pharmacy, so thought I'd give the coconut oil a try. It worked.

Pre- workout, as in weights or cardio??

Yep, total bollocks as far as I know. I did try it, because I can't have milk. I don't mind it coffee.

But I don't have it because of the supposed health benefits. Sometimes I just fancy something other than black coffee.

Some people swear by it as a preworkout. Can't say I noticed a difference .

My opinion is,

If you are using coconut oil because of the supposed health benefits, you really need to look into it because most of the benefits aren't proven.

If you use it because you like and it's seems to work for you, crack on.

I LOVE that series, quietbat, thanks! :)

Regarding other replies, I think I'll execute a quiet retreat ...

sleeponeday · 05/12/2015 15:33

Please do not presume that everyone is ignorant of things just because you are.

What, like you and basic good manners? Perhaps you could Google them sometime.

Thanks, OP, helpful post. Smile

PrincessMouse · 05/12/2015 15:47

Enjolrass gutted back to good old fashioned training then? Sad Wink

With regards moisturising and hair treatment, Coconut oil really does seem to work for me. I also like the taste so I use it to cook with.

Jux · 05/12/2015 15:51

I use it as an occasional night moisturiser, and even more occasional hair treatment. I have very very dry skin so a bit in the bath helps too. I'm sure I'd get the same out of olive oil, bit I prefer the smell of coconut.

There is no doubt it sorted my feet when all else had failed.

I don't know if it's miraculous or not, but I'm not bothered. It works for the things I use it for, is cheap as chips, and that's really all I need.

ZaZathecat · 05/12/2015 15:53

Where do you get it from? I went in my local chemist and they only had tiny little bottles of it.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 05/12/2015 15:58

Zaza - health food shops, African food shops (maybe Asian ones too), or online

OP posts:
Timri · 05/12/2015 16:04

Zaza Or afrocarribean hair shops which is where I get mine, but after being on here going to look in the food shops, as it seems to be cheaper

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 16:15

We get ours at the Asian supermarket. Thats where it's cheapest. A lot of health food store and supplement shops all so stock it, but they are usually more expensive.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 16:15

"Shockingly some people know things because their work involves speaking directly to people."

Ah.

You do know that the people who produce baby salad leaves for supermarkets, or palm oil or a million other things are going to tell their customers how wonderful it is for them and their country, don't you? The reality is usually much more....nuanced, shall we say?

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 16:17

Did someone mention Bad Science Bingo?

argument from antiquity, argument from authority, regression to the mean, correlation being mistaken for causation........

Boutonneux · 05/12/2015 16:27

As said previously, it's an excellent make up remover. It's literally the only thing that removes Benefit's "They're Real" mascara, even better than the specific remover that they sell for it.

anotherbusymum14 · 05/12/2015 16:37

When my son cuts his knees or something (falls over) we have had the biggest, ickiest cuts and grazes clear up really fast with coconut oil. My son even asks now "please put the coconut oil on it."

I just don't like cooking with it as you have to use so much, it burns up really quickly. Otherwise I love it.

ZaZathecat · 05/12/2015 16:40

Thanks I'll try the local Asian supermarket then.

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 16:44

bert I am not their customer.

You have issues. If you think it's bad for the farmers that's absolutely fine.

Stupid me for daring to disagree with you.

I have spent much more time looking into this than you, clearly. So am happy with my view.

This isn't The Hague, it's a forum. You put forth and opinion, I have my view on it.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 16:51

"You have issues" Grin

"If you think it's bad for the farmers that's absolutely fine"

I don't know whether it is or not. You said it wasn't and you had looked into it- it does seem just a bit odd that you can't produce any information about it. Cash crops tend to have complicated, often negative impacts on local economies- particularly cash crops where the demand has suddenly soared. For example, the demand for baby leaf salad has had a pretty devastating effect on the water table in some parts of Spain. Palm oil production has caused problems in other parts of the world. I am interested in finding out more about the impact of the demand for coconut oil. I thought you knew about it and could tell me. Which is why I asked.

MerdeAlor · 05/12/2015 16:53

Potatoface steroid cream is prescribed for balanitis and tight foreskins. Careful use of it thins and stretches the foreskin so it can retract.

DingbatsFur · 05/12/2015 16:58

If you melt it and add sugar, then leave to cool it makes a great scrub!

BertieBotts · 05/12/2015 17:10

They sell it in normal supermarkets too with the other oils. Don't buy it in a bottle with a thin neck Confused I have no idea why they sell it that way. Jars are better.

It is a good moisturiser and the fact it's solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature makes it feel intriguing but it's definitely not a wonder product.

Should note - it was going around like wildfire in a local group that it was great used as an, er, intimate massager. Then somebody got pregnant. They hadn't realised that as it's oil based, it should never be used with condoms. Be aware! Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe in all situations.

Also I second what Merde said. I've heard of this before. BTW anecdotally, "tight banjo" is linked to tongue and lip tie in babies. If anyone has a baby boy who had to have one cut then it's something to maybe inform them of when they become teenagers. Most boys apparently break theirs while masturbating, and then panic, but it isn't dangerous and doesn't cause a problem, normally heals up by itself as long as the area is kept clean.

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 05/12/2015 17:19

Iv heard of its benefits but never used it, will get some now. Thanks op.

Sallystyle · 05/12/2015 17:33

I get thrush all the time.

I will try it out. If it works then it will be the best thing ever. If it doesn't the dogs can eat it with their food.

hazeyjane · 05/12/2015 17:43

It made eczema worse on dd2 and I. Did naff all on ds's cradle cap (although to be fair, ds's cradle cap will survive the apocalypse), and I may as well have put chi fat on my face and hair when I tried it on them (turned big painful spots into big painful shiny spots)

DO NOT EVER PUT IT ON BURNS
