Met a nice guy, been out a couple of times but he's called Bruce and it angers me! It makes me cringe and I can't seem to get over it. AIBU to just give up on him over it?

OP posts:

Justaboy I was wondering when Monty Python was going to crop up. Mind if I call you all Bruce just to avoid confusion? Grin

OnlyLovers · 01/12/2015 12:57

I think Sean's a nice name!

Never had one. Used to fancy Sean Maguire in his beautiful youth. Grin

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 01/12/2015 13:09

wol i think Nelly mentioned it on page one. I've been humming the Bruces/Philosophers song for the last ten minutes. I'm off to YouTube to get it out of my system:o

Shosha1 · 01/12/2015 13:33

I have a younger DB called Bruce Shock

He is extremely good looking, fantastic job, hard working, intelligent, fairly well off.

He has also been with his Husband 20 years so very loyal :)

My friends always sigh and ask weather they could try and convert him :)

ChippyOik · 01/12/2015 13:35

This thread makes no sense to me. There are names I'd have to grit my teeth through, but Bruce is a good strong name. Neil, Martin, Darren, Gary... for me it's those embarrassingly banal names of my generation that I'd have to "get over".

sofato5miles · 01/12/2015 13:39

Same here chippy. A Wayne or a Jason would be a mild issue for me. Bruce is a good, strong name.

Justaboy · 01/12/2015 14:06

wol1968 Yep! blue cal me Bruce anytime Bruce deuce:-)

alltouchedout · 01/12/2015 14:12

My mum and dad fell out when my little brother was born as Dad (Scotsman transplanted to England) wanted to name him Robert Bruce Surname. It's not one of my favourite names but I don't hate it.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 01/12/2015 14:14

Is it just me or does Bruce now sound really weird?! Like I've said it too much. Bruce Bruce bruce. Bruce brucebruce.

YABU OP. Well worse names, like many mentioned.

pootypootwell · 01/12/2015 15:09

I know Only, I can see that there is nothing wrong with it now! Think it was probably more him as a person/that my dad has lots of friends called Sean, and I projected this onto his name!

diddl · 01/12/2015 15:11

I don't like my husband's name so I don't call him it!

We've been married 20yrs-that was probably the last time I used it!

BackInTheRealWorld · 01/12/2015 15:11

I've had a Desmond, a Wayne and a Nigel.
All tossers in the end...but that was nothing to do with their names. In fact their names ended up being the least worst bit of them!

Unreasonablebetty · 01/12/2015 15:12

There's a cute pug that lives on our street called Bruce, every time I hear the name all I think of is him..... Nice to see you, to see you nice (not sure if I got it right, but I vaguely remember this!!)

BackInTheRealWorld · 01/12/2015 15:13

And a Derek, but he was never a tosser.

Pandora97 · 01/12/2015 15:54

Grin Pope Wayne haha. Although I don't know about Francis....I love the name but a lot of people think it's effeminate.

I actually don't mind Nigel due to my teenage crush on Nigel Harman. Blush I know a girl my age (late 20s) who's engaged to a Barry, I really don't think I could bring myself to go out with a Barry.

A name I really can't stand that's popular on here is Monty. It's just so wet, definitely couldn't go out with a Monty. I cringe every time I see it mentioned it on here. But then I suppose it fits with all the old man names that are popular - I can't imagine shagging a Wilf or a Stanley either but it'll be normal in 20 years. As in Wilfs and Stanleys will be young and gorgeous enough to shag, not that I'll be some cougar going looking for Wilfs and Stanleys. Grin

Whythehellnot · 01/12/2015 15:58

I completely understand op. I think it's a funny name to say and not cool at all.

I did go out with a Brian once years ago and that was really old fashioned even then. I do find names put me off. I like a strong manly name.

derxa · 01/12/2015 16:16

Actually I love the name Bruce. Robert the Bruce. I'm Scottish and I think you are being VVVU. Grin

SuperFlyHigh · 01/12/2015 16:40

How about bruce as in Springsteen?! I'm not helping am I?!

patientzero · 01/12/2015 16:51

PMSL at the amount of people who've said at least he's not called Kevin. I logged on specially to say that very thing. And my DH is called Kevin!

I honestly did think twice about going out with him because of the name. Then realised he was awesome and I was being a twat.

WhatsWithTheHashtags · 01/12/2015 16:57

Bruce Parry.

This Bruce will have been an Aussie lifeguard in the past surely?

KurriKurri · 01/12/2015 16:58

I quite like the name Kevin - what's wrong with it?

(Mind you I have had relationships with men called Kevin, Graeme, and Bruce - maybe I attract the unpopularly named Grin - I also went out with an Ian - but I think that is probably OK isn't it?)

batshitlady · 01/12/2015 17:02

No, Bruce it's completely intolerable, finish with him now!

What's his number?

FreeWorker1 · 01/12/2015 21:12

Awww....couldn't you just start calling him a pet name like 'SnugglyWinky' and settle down in married bliss?

thelouise · 01/12/2015 21:30

I dated a lovely bloke named Boris. He is a white middle class English guy, his parents appeared normal and his sister was called Rachel. Grin

IrishDad79 · 01/12/2015 21:36

Did you know that a number of years ago, France relaxed its rules on what you could name your kids (there was a set list of French names from which to choose) and in the first year of the new rules, the most popular name for new born boys in France was................Kevin!
