Met a nice guy, been out a couple of times but he's called Bruce and it angers me! It makes me cringe and I can't seem to get over it. AIBU to just give up on him over it?

It could be worse... I married a Trevor !! I still don't like his name much but after 27 years I have got used to it Grin

Footle · 30/11/2015 22:14

Anyone else remember a reception thread started by a woman whose partner had never called her by her name, and pretended he couldn't pronounce it ? LTB all the way on that thread. How was that different ?

I love the name Bruce!

Sadly DH doesn't so I have no sons called Bruce.

Footle · 30/11/2015 22:15

Reception? I tried to write 'recentish'.

Littlegreyauditor · 30/11/2015 22:15

Yes, TheTravellingLemon you beat me to it. That is a Bruce, and the only appropriate response is damn.

I would. Then, now, I'm not fussy. That is an epic Bruce. [fans self]

Scarletforya · 30/11/2015 22:17

It's not even that bad. At least it's not Kevin. Or Derek.

lilyb84 · 30/11/2015 22:23

Some excellent Bruce examples on here. I know someone with a baby Bruce so seems to be making a comeback!

My DH has the same name as my dad. It's not a massively common name and until I met DH had only met one other than my dad. This is compounded by his middle name being the same as my ex-BF's name. It took me a good fortnight to agree to go out with him and 7 years, a wedding and one impending baby later my mum (separated from my dad) still refuses to call him anything other than 'G' which is the first initial Grin.

lilyb84 · 30/11/2015 22:24

Oh and YABU, a name can grow on you!

stealthbanana · 30/11/2015 22:30

Bruce Springsteen transcends his objectively awful name

Bruce is an awful name. Call him "The Bruce" for awhile, then extend it to Robert the Bruce, then shorten it to Rob. Job done.

I went out with an Ian once. When I broke up with him, one of my friends said "thank GOD you couldn't possibly marry someone called IAN". She was right Grin

Senpai · 30/11/2015 22:41

If you're really so hung up over his name, you're too immature to be dating anyone, let alone poor Bruce...

QueenArseClangers · 30/11/2015 22:42

Oi SirChenjin! My DH is a Nigel and he used to have a best mate called Trevor! Grin

INeedNewShoes · 30/11/2015 22:45

I went out with a Bruce. I have to admit I never quite got used to his name. His personality just wasn't manly enough to tally with the ever-so-manly name!

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 30/11/2015 22:49

Oh god, DH's first and second names have been mentioned on this thread. And the one he was almost called.

Confused
ExBallerina · 30/11/2015 22:52

Forgive my ignorance...but what's wrong with Kevin and/or Nigel?

DevlinMaccabee · 30/11/2015 22:53

It makes me think of Bruce, the shark from Finding Nemo.

"Fish are friends, not food"

BushyTailedPony · 30/11/2015 23:08

I quite like Bruce. I went out with a lovely genuine Bruce for a few years in my early 20s.

My fuck buddy was called Nigel. Now that's an awful name.

But worst of all. Malcolm.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/11/2015 23:08

The name Bruce for me will always be associated with the one in the very funny Scotland Street novels. Not a single good quality about him. Sorry, OP. Grin

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 30/11/2015 23:11

I've been out with
Derek
Ken
Donald
They all sound like characters off Benidorm don't they?
I had to draw the line at Kevin though not just due to his name but combined with the fact he was a virgin. Just. Could. Not

Lweji · 30/11/2015 23:14

Footle

I remember that thread. There were other issues besides the OP's name and it wasn't that he wouldn't say it. He kept mispronouncing it, despite her pointing it out to him.

SistersOfPercy · 30/11/2015 23:16

My first thought was also Bruce Dickinson. What a guy, Olympic fencer, airline pilot, published author and lead singer of iron maiden in his spare time (dreamy sigh).

My second thought was Bruce Wayne.
I rather like it personally.

TheSecondOfHerName · 30/11/2015 23:21

If you like him enough then you can get past this. My DH has a name that is difficult to take seriously, but I'm used to it now. He makes a joke of it, which helps.

WhataRacquet · 30/11/2015 23:33

Wow, Sisters I never knew that about Bruce Dickinson.
