to think this is unacceptable

Just found out that in my hometown high school PE activities are still split by gender. The boys do football and rugby, the girls do netball and hockey. When the girls do dance, the boys do tennis. I cant believe this seperation is still going on without question.

Apparantly if a child 'kicks up a fuss' about wanting to do a sport of the opposite gender they will be allowed to do it but would be the only boy or girl in the class, hence hardly any do.

I think this is outrageous, all children should be taught all sports available as standard. Why is a seperation based on gender neccessary, and why is this still going on?

Pinot, you're being deliberately obtuse. Hockey isn't a girls sport. Tennis isn't a boys sport. Dance isn't for women only. That's what the OP is objecting to.

Sport is still soaked in sexism. Women were only allowed to compete in the marathon in the Olympics for the first time in 1984. People were worried their wombs would drop out Confused

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:34

Thankfully by the time I was in school we all did woodwork, cooking ect. No seperation. Though pinot probably thinks that is 'defying the laws of being male and female' and that girls should stick to 'girl stuff' like needlework.

It is only classed as a male sport as long as people like you consider it so.

And who has asked for a mixed male/female team? (Quick look back at thread, oh - no-one)

Bunbaker · 22/11/2015 22:35

We used to have mixed hockey in 6th form. I always came home with bruised legs on Fridays.

BrandNewAndImproved · 22/11/2015 22:35

Oh fuck off op I can read just fine.

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:36

what is classed as a male sport
It's only classed as a male sport in your mind!!

What funds do you need to give a class of girls a football instead of 30 hockey sticks? Less presumably?

Oh fuck off op I can read just fine

Oh dear! (Reading and comprehension, two entirely different entities). Xmas Grin

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:38

Oh fuck off Brand I can remember what I wrote just fine.

(p.s. if youre not getting this I'm quoting your posts word for word, so dont get too offended. He who casts the first stone and all that)

OP posts:
BrandNewAndImproved · 22/11/2015 22:39

I really don't understand why posters bother to post when they only want to hear a chorus of yes op your so clever to have thought of that.

If I could be bothered to cut and paste or even screen shot your posts op to show you I can read just fine but you seem to not be able to recall your posts I would. As it is I'm not wasting any more of my phones battery on you.

(wish we had a middle finger emoticon)

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 22:41

Im saying that some things are fine about boys and girls and I like it. I don't have to get my ears bashed off in rugby to have equality.
I don't have to punch another persons face in at boxing.
I don't have to break my legs or pull a million hamstrings in football.
I dont have to do a male sport to prove anything. To me that's just ridiculous.

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 22:43

There are some boys and some girls that want different. All hail to them but then they get that out of the curriculum and stop trying to change the NORM.

mrsmugoo · 22/11/2015 22:43

Competitive/ professional sport is split by sex so I don't see why schools would have boys competing against girls?

anothermakesthree · 22/11/2015 22:45

I think my DD's school have it right. All the kids do the same sports on rotation. They are split by sex but the girls & boys do exactly the same sports. Girls do netball, football, hockey, table tennis, rugby & athletics. Boys do the same. Dance is offered as a extra curricular club and is open to both boys & girls. The PE teachers (male/female) teach both sexes.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 22/11/2015 22:45

Pinot - that's fine if YOU choose it. Other 'weak' females may choose something else. And THAT IS THEIR CHOICE. It is not for you to choose for them

And still you keep on with the 'male sport' thing. Sport is sport. Whoever chooses to participate in any sport they like. You choose not to. And that's fine, but do not try to hinder anyone else.

Mistigri · 22/11/2015 22:46

I'm actually astonished to learn that PE classes are still segregated.

School sport classes here in France are always mixed, in fact I am pretty sure that segregation would be illegal.

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 22:46

Blimey OP you are very rude. Now that has nothing to do with the so called battle of the sexes. You are just plain rude!

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:47

Im saying that some things are fine about boys and girls and I like it
No idea what this sentence means.

Surely equality would be all children having the opportunity to partake in all sporting activities, not being barred from certain activities based on their sex?

OP posts:
pinotblush · 22/11/2015 22:49

Males are built stronger that females ITS A FACT Evans. Sport does depict this so im not sure WHY YOU ARE SHOUTING AT ME!

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:49

Should we have stopped trying to changed the NORM in the 80s then pinot? Should girls still be barred from doing woodwork because they prefer needlework or cooking?

OP posts:
EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 22/11/2015 22:49

I cannot believe your claim to be a feminist. Quite a while back, it was the NORM for women to not be allowed to vote. It was the NORM for rape to be permitted within marriage.

It should now be the NORM that pupils can participate in all kinds of different sports, as they choose. Girls play football and rugby, boys play netball and hockey, everyone dance and sing.

Choughed · 22/11/2015 22:49

Pinot, the norm is only the norm because of centuries of sexist bullshit. Like unequal pay for equal work, discrimination in the workplace and political disenfranchisement of women.

For example, women's football matches once pulled bigger crowds than most men's games - sometimes more than 50,000. In the 1920s the sport flourished with around 150 women's teams in England. But then the women's game was effectively banned, with the FA at the time saying the game of football is "quite unsuitable for females".

Or are you one of those weirdos who thinks strength and sweat is "unfeminine"?

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 22:50

Oh, yes, we girls had to do dancing in school, and I HATED it, as I am about as graceful as a pregnant elephant. Possibly less, I don't want to insult elephants.

I am of the opinion that if girls have to do different stuff from boys, then that should be strength training and self-defense. That would at least make sense.

Or climbing. Girls (or smaller, lighter persons in general) are naturally better at climbing than men, so if the goal is to build self-esteem, that would be the sport of choice.

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 22:50

Im not sure why you feel so belittled as a woman by this OP.

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:50

Pinot what does males being stronger than females have to do with a group ALL FEMALES participating in a game of rugby (which you are agaisnt)? Just answer that very simple question.

OP posts:
mudandmayhem01 · 22/11/2015 22:52

But as the women's boxing in the olympics, the women's football and rugby world cup, women's ashes etc etc women can and do excel in these sports. No one is suggesting that Casey stoner wants to be in the same team as wayne Rooney but it wrong that the next generation of great female players don't get the opportunity to develop and be discovered through school football. Also my ds would much rather do gym, cycling, swimming, dance than football, all these options will be denied to him at senior school. Separate groups by sex but a full choice of sports for both sexes. please.
