to think this is unacceptable

Just found out that in my hometown high school PE activities are still split by gender. The boys do football and rugby, the girls do netball and hockey. When the girls do dance, the boys do tennis. I cant believe this seperation is still going on without question.

Apparantly if a child 'kicks up a fuss' about wanting to do a sport of the opposite gender they will be allowed to do it but would be the only boy or girl in the class, hence hardly any do.

I think this is outrageous, all children should be taught all sports available as standard. Why is a seperation based on gender neccessary, and why is this still going on?

Exactly kali110 and being made to have mixed lessons would make it 10x worse.
A short time is enough to know whether you like it or not. I like badminton.
The stupid thing is that if you are hopeless at one the expectation is that you are hopeless at all. I enjoyed the summer term when those good at hockey got surprised that I was reasonably good at tennis.
I liked basketball but hated netball.
It is all very individual.
Any threads about hatred of school PE will get hoards of people saying how much they hated it. Chief hate was getting picked last on teams.
As far as I can see nothing has changed and insisting that everyone has to do everything will not improve it. I know that I don't want to play rugby ever!

I was terrible at ALL sport and it was not conditioning.
My dad played loads of sports with me growing up i was just awful.
Balls, shuttlecocks all went over the fence Grin

Of course it isn't conditioning. My mother loved team sports, couldn't understand why I hated hockey and was always telling me that when she was bored as a child she was bouncing balls against walls etc. Brought up with brothers there was ample opportunity for me to play. I used to play French cricket with them for hours, but nothing else.
