to think this is unacceptable

Just found out that in my hometown high school PE activities are still split by gender. The boys do football and rugby, the girls do netball and hockey. When the girls do dance, the boys do tennis. I cant believe this seperation is still going on without question.

Apparantly if a child 'kicks up a fuss' about wanting to do a sport of the opposite gender they will be allowed to do it but would be the only boy or girl in the class, hence hardly any do.

I think this is outrageous, all children should be taught all sports available as standard. Why is a seperation based on gender neccessary, and why is this still going on?

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 22:52

Why should it be.

Why do women have to loose sight of whats important and piss everyone off. That is NOT what I am about.

I am about equality as stated above.

Stop trying to "blend" everything. Its stupid and not needed.

BrandNewAndImproved · 22/11/2015 22:52

Only on MN can someone claim I can't comprehend the written word and then compare girls not having a rugby option in school to rape...

Anyway school isn't compulsory, don't send your dc to a school that doesn't offer what you want. Simple really but then you do seem slightly obnoxious op and unable to grasp certain things.

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 22:56

Why cant you just answer my very simple question pinot?

And you are not about equality. Youve made that blatantly clear.

What is important that's being lost? I'd have thought something is to be gained. You are not about 'equality' - you are separating 'boys' things from 'girls' things.

What do you think the difference is between equality and blending everything?

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 22:58

Where do you live? It sure is compulsory where I live. And even if it isn't, exposing your children to sexism or let them starve to death in an economy where you only get a job with an education ... is not exactly a choice, is it?

So, I have to conclude you live somewhere in the countryside where everyone is a self-employed farmer?

celtictoast · 22/11/2015 22:59

YANBU. Of course there should be equal opportunities in sport, just like in any other school subject.

Choughed · 22/11/2015 22:59

So what's important Pinot? If not to give women and girls the same opportunities and boys and men?

We should get het up about sexism in sport. In the same way as if a school decided to make all its black pupils do athletics and not swimming because that's the "norm" in sport.

RufusTheReindeer · 22/11/2015 23:01

Yanbu

At all, and i think that some posters on here are being deliberately obtuse

mudandmayhem01 · 22/11/2015 23:02

Why is football more intrinsically suitable for males rather than females?

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 23:02

I am puzzled as to why someone would use "males are stronger" as argument to defend the present state of things.

It is an argument in favour of the changes I propose: strength training for girls. (Which would also be much more efficient to prevent osteoporosis and diabetes, diseases that affect women more than men, than dancing or netball)

BrandNewAndImproved · 22/11/2015 23:03

I live in England where there is a wide range of secondary schools to choose from. Everything from steiner, academics, rugby schools, shitty academies, sport focused schools, grammars and private.

You can also homeschool if you don't like what's on offer. No one can force you to pick a school that offers what you don't want.

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 23:03

@Choughed: Exactly. Imagine the public outrage if black children were made to do different things from what white children do.

Why do people think that sexism is okay, when they are aware that racism is not okay?

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 23:03

Why do have to ask me to answer "a" question OP?

I am about the important equality issues. I am not about "blending" the two. As I said previously....

I believe in the same wages for both that do the same job.
I believe in equal chores at home.
I believe in respect for differences.

I believe in not making a man feel inferior to gain any sort of right. I believe in finding a balance.

Aussiemum78 · 22/11/2015 23:04

Mrsjanedoe - many schools here don't do full contact sports for boys or girls because of injury risk. If you do boxing or full contact rugby, it's usually Extracurricular.

Touch footy and oztag are extremely popular sports for both genders. Touch isn't the "weak girl" version at all.

Pinot, does your girl things attitude extend to cooking vs woodwork? What about science and maths?

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 23:05

@Brand: Nice your you, I live in Germany, where you are lucky if one school is in reasonable distance from where you live, and homeschooling is not allowed.

Also, maybe stay out of discussions like this if all you have to contribute is "Just change schools" The suggestion is quite pointless.

Choughed · 22/11/2015 23:05

I believe in not making a man feel inferior to gain any sort of right. I believe in finding a balance.

What does that mean? When I go to my exercise class should I make sure that I pick lighter weights than then men? Confused

pieceofpurplesky · 22/11/2015 23:05

Lots of schools offer girls football and rugby as an extra curricular option - where I teach they can do both. Boys can take extra curricular dance and netball. The school my DS goes to offers the same. The thing is a lot of teenage girls would rather dance, play netball, do fitness activities than tear around a field getting muddy. That's not anti-feminist it's just the way a lot of teenage girls are. In summer all pupils can choose tennis, cricket, rounders, dance etc regardless of sex. We are a very comprehensive school - never had any complaints from parents at all.
We have had boys go on to study dance and girls play high level football - but as much as we protest and want equality some teenage girls who have spent an hour straightening their hair in the morning to not want to run around in the mud and rain .... The school has to educate all not just the few really sporty girls.

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 23:06

How does a bunch of girls playing footy make a man feel inferior? And also, WHATTT???!! Confused equality should only be permitted as long as it doesnt make men feel inferior?

With every post I am shocked with how you can possibily claim to be a feminist or for equality.

Unless it's a sporting activity. Confused

How can a girl/woman playing a sport of their choice make a man feel inferior? From my own experience, the male species really likes it when 'girls' are good at sports and 'boy' stuff.

You must have led a very sheltered life.

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 23:07

Aussie.

There has been a pole lately asking what different genders want.

Very few girls actually want to do university courses in the sciences or math.. they would rather choose psychology and the arts.

I wonder why?

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 23:08

Evans you a choosing what i said and turning it around.

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 23:08

@mileend2: It always makes some men feel inferior when women do the same things they do ... because there's a chance that the women do it better.

But of course, men are so much important than women that we cannot allow them to feel inferior EVER.

Therefore, girls cannot ever do the same things boys do. It would crush the poor, weak, fragile males' self-esteem completely.

mileend2bermondsey · 22/11/2015 23:09

The thing is a lot of teenage girls would rather do needlework or typing or cooking than try and saw a piece of wood and make a bird house.

Hence it should be banned for all. Seems reasonable.

Choughed · 22/11/2015 23:10

Yes Brand, if we don't like anything about the state, taxpayer-funded schools we should just opt out Hmm not, you know, try to change things for the better.

Girls used to steered away from STEMM subjects too, luckily someone objected about that.

Schools like the one the OP describes makes a mockery of the #thisgirlcan campaign.
