Surely if anyone finds this advert offensive they can choose not to watch it. I can't see the problem with showing it.

"Or expecting equality laws not to apply to them.

Ah I think we could level that a quite a few faiths really."
Really? Examples please.

myotherusernameisbetter · 22/11/2015 21:08

That's true egos, i don't have any respect for the faith as I've said before. Anyone who can continue to follow a religion that has facilitated the rape of children (amongst other things) is not worthy of respect - regardless of the fact that I don't believe in any god.

myotherusernameisbetter · 22/11/2015 21:12

If people here were actively endorsing Jimmy Saville and Gary Glitter there would rightly be an outcry but we are suposed to respect people that allow atrocities to be committed within the organisation they support - I don't think so.....and that doesn't just go for Christians either.

That's why religion should scrapped.

The requirement for women to cover their heads, be expected to worship in separate parts of the building, not be able to become leaders of their faith, FGM. To name but a few things

Not all Christians are ignorant Myother although I would say some Christian leaders in America make a business out of using ignorance to manipulate people into discrimination and religion.

But Bush is ignorant in everything he does- he shows little sensitivity, humanity, subtlety or faith in anyone.

I do think the RC church and Church of England have been hugely damaged by the child abuse scandals and their attempts to cover things up. I don't think they will ever recover in this country. The days of Blind Faith have long gone.

However, I find Sharia Law and lots of elements of the Moslem faith entirely unacceptable and offensive and I don't want it in my life or near me.

None of them embrace women as equals- Christianity, Moslems, Judaism- women are second class citizens in all of them.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2015 21:49

"their heads, be expected to worship in separate parts of the building, not be able to become leaders of their faith,FGM. To name but a few things"

Well, the first 3 are actually allowed in law- which is a good thing for Roman Catholics and many Protestants as well. FGM is a cultural rather than a religious practice - but is, in any case utterly, unambiguously illegal- no exemptions under the law there...........

Pipbin · 22/11/2015 21:51

Well ok then, what equality laws does the Christian church think doesn't apply to them?

mrsglowglow · 22/11/2015 21:53

I am against any form of religious advertising at the cinema. A trip to the cinema for me is escapism from real life. I am a catholic and my faith is important to me so this advert wouldn't offend me but I'm sure plenty of my fellow cinema goers would rather not be forced to watch it.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2015 21:55

You only have to look at the news- registrars thinking they shouldn't have to marry gay people, doctors and nurses being allowed to refuse to offer advice on abortion.....to name but two.

Cleansheetsandbedding · 22/11/2015 21:57

I don't find it offensive but I don't want to watch it and it is a captive audience.

Why does religion have to pushed down folks throat at every opportunity? Where do you draw the line? When does one cinima turn in to a predominantly Christian, Muslim, Jewish ect and ends up being avoided by other faiths.

Religion is an out dated practice and I don't want to hear about it when I'm getting settled to watch a film

Please understand that I am intolerant of all faiths equally. I think all of them seem to think that equality laws don't apply to them.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2015 22:15

"Please understand that I am intolerant of all faiths equally. I think all of them seem to think that equality laws don't apply to them."

But in the UK it's only Christianity that has some exemptions enshrined In Law, and expects other exemptions to be observed in practice. No other religions has or does- whatever you might read in the Daily Mail.

Pipbin · 22/11/2015 22:27

whatever you might read in the Daily Mail.

Don't accuse me of reading the Daily Mail!!!

Do you think doctors and nurses who fundamentally disagree with abortion should be forced to take part in it?

I'm not pro life by any means and have been involved in many terminations through my jobI would never expect anyone to be involved in the process against their will. I can't imagine anyone would Confused Perhaps I misunderstood your post.

PiperChapstick · 23/11/2015 00:08

As an atheist I would be offended by this advert. The same way a Christian would probably be offended by an ad in the cinema encouraging people not to believe in God

chilledwarmth · 23/11/2015 00:29

I think the cinema is being fair here. It's not discrimination or preventing the people of that religion expressing their beliefs because they don't have an obligation to give a platform to anyone with a religious belief and they are consistent in their approach, not allowing any kind of religious advert. If they were allowing a Christian advert but not a Muslim one then that is where I think it would count as discrimination but not this.

LassWiTheWeelStockitFarm · 23/11/2015 01:11

I am an atheist. This advert would no more annoy me than the pro Yes adverts annoyed me during the independence referendum- which was a mild irritation. (Actually it would pobably annoy me less). It would have as little influence on me as the vast majority of cinema adverts do ( e.g all banks and mobile phone companies are pretty much the same and I'd never buy a perfume on the basis of an ad)

I agree with Dawkins

Richard Dawkins says UK cinemas should screen the Lord's Prayer

I think Dawkins has it wrong because he has focussed on the statement that people may be offended by this. Yes, he's right in the sense that it's a silly thing to be offended by. But he hasn't considered the fact that their policy is not to allow religious and political advertising at all, and that it's a perfectly sensible policy. If one advert of that type is shown you have to be prepared to show all of them, including the BNP and KKK and satanism adverts. No, thanks.

Cinemas showed ads during the independence referendum campaign so it is not correct they don't show political adverts.
