Surely if anyone finds this advert offensive they can choose not to watch it. I can't see the problem with showing it.

I am not offended by it but would not think it should be allowed because then it would open the door to other religions promoting themselves in cinema adverts- moslems, jews, jehovahs witness, mormons etc. I think there are dangers in allowing any religion to promote itself to captive audiences. I also think at the moment it would be a very hot potato in areas of the country.

In the north- east where we live, it us 98% white British. Probably have little impact if this was shown. People would sit through it, it is relatively benign and unoffensive and short. I think there would be a different reaction if an advert came on advertising the moslem religion here- lots of discomfort. If you showed the C of E one in Birmingham or Bradford- where my PIL live- I think it would cause disquiet and upset.

Religious adverts are not for cinemas and captive audiences.

AnthonyBlanche · 22/11/2015 18:45

Exactly Lulu! I haven't watched the advert, but doubt that I'd find it offensive - irritating yes, offensive no. If the cinema chain allowed religious advertising we would probably end up in a situation where all the different sky fairy believers signed up for cinema advertising. Can't say I'd be thrilled to go to cinema to find I had to sit through 15 minutes of adverts, each one trying to persuade me that their particular sky fairy was the "real" one....

Pipbin · 22/11/2015 19:09

It's easy to work out which is the 'real' one Anthony because by a wonderful coincidence it happens to be the same one as your parents and the other people in your country/ your country of heritage believe in.
Isn't that lucky?

The state religion in England is also Protestantism. The Church of England has lots of concessions and access to power that other religions don't.

BartholinsSister · 22/11/2015 19:55

"Our Father, who art in heaven"

  1. I thought he gave up his only child, Jesus. If so, he is not our father. If he is our father, then Jesus was not his only son.
  2. Art is not a verb.
LiberalPedant · 22/11/2015 19:56

Interesting that Wales and NI do not have established churches.

Have we gone as far as allowing Catholics to be 'on the throne'? The Queen/King is Head of the Church of England- I can't see that they could also be Catholic. I thought we had said the King\Queen could marry a Catholic.

LuluJakey1 · 22/11/2015 20:05

I don't want to sit in a cinema listening to the Quran, or to someone reciting Torah- so let's not allow any of it.

LuluJakey1 · 22/11/2015 20:06

Or hearing RC propaganda - and I am a Catholic.

Senpai · 22/11/2015 20:06

It's also interesting that countries where Christianity is probably the most common religion (such as the USA, France etc) do not have State religions either.

Christianity is the de facto religion in the US, but we don't have an official religion or an official language. It's fun to point that out to people clutching pearls to seeing a spanish translation alongside english instructions.

Anyway, clever marketing maneuver.

  1. Submit ad to place you know it will get rejected (and know your target audience will not be reached)
  2. Cry religious persecution to your target audience, and convince them they are victims.
  3. Watch everyone react with righteous outrage
  4. ???
  5. Profit.

I think that if you don't believe in God over there, you don't get elected.

I am fairly convinced that Obama is pretending tbh. He seems an intelligent guy. Not to pretend however would render you unelectable I agree.

Pipbin · 22/11/2015 20:14

England doesn't have an official language either. As I understand it the only official language in the uk is Welsh.

Senpai · 22/11/2015 20:18

Doubt the USA will ever have that for a while. I think that if you don't believe in God over there, you don't get elected.

I dunno they'll just pretend like every other politician. There was a lot of fear mongering that Obama was Muslim, and he still got elected. He keeps his religion to himself though unless asked.

Is that what's it all about?

That's what every church is about. God is a very profitable business.

myotherusernameisbetter · 22/11/2015 20:20

For the ones at the top. It's also a good place to hide. I am fairly convinced that the pope and his senior management team don't believe either. It's all just a massive money making machine and a way to keep the poor in their place imo.

In terms of USA presidents, I would doubt Clinton or Bush Junior were actually Christian. Clinton because of how he lived his life, Bush because he is just ignorant in every way.

The guy that started Scientology even said that religion is the quickest and easiest way to make a lot of money. Then he made up one based on a crappy sci-fi book.

Bush because he is just ignorant in every way From what I have seen, not only is that a perfect way to be for higher political office it is a major requirement for being a christian.
