to think that this 'transsexual' Jesus play should not get public funding?

I would say 'no words' but how about "disgusting, insulting, disrespectful, immoral..." need I go on? How does this awful thing get 'public funding' - I'd be demanding a refund of my council tax. Enough already!

I don't understand, what exactly does your average Christian do that is mock worthy, but not other faiths?

catfordbetty · 12/11/2015 20:07

This is called logic

I think you'll find it's called sophistry.

OnIlkelyMoorBahtat · 12/11/2015 20:08

catford Grin

merrymouse · 12/11/2015 20:10

If only the OP could explain exactly why this is offensive.

Manamanah · 12/11/2015 20:35

m.youtube.com/watch?v=fHMoDt3nSHs From about 3 min 30-Steve Hughes on offence. I always think of this when someone is offended by something as remote as a play in a city they don't live in that noone's forcing them to see.

OP I don't care that this offends you. Religion does not confer special rights to be pandered to (although the DUP are working hard on this). You have the freedom to practice your religion without hindrance. I have the freedom to laugh about it.

Although as PPs have said; in this case the play isn't actually mocking Christianity. But why let something as petty as facts get I the way?

justgoandgetalife · 12/11/2015 21:03

BoneyBackJefferson re Tim Minchin clip - LMAO big time!

Roseforarose · 12/11/2015 21:14

It is mocking Christianity and that is the writers aim.

celtictoast · 12/11/2015 21:21

Theatre and the arts have always been a vehicle for challenging, or sending up, real-life beliefs, politics and situations. Nothing new here.

pointythings · 12/11/2015 21:24

Even if it is mocking Christianity - where does it say that Christians (or any member of any faith) have any right to not be mocked? You can mock me any day of the week. I'm an atheist, have at it. This is called freedom of speech. As long as you don't go around saying 'atheists are evil, all good (fill in the religion of your choice here) should go out and kill them' you can say whatever the hell you like. A lot of wars were fought to give us that freedom and I for one appreciate it.

merrymouse · 12/11/2015 21:31

How is it mocking Christianity?

Jesus is often portrayed as somebody other than a middle eastern Jew and he was (from the bible) a supporter and fellow traveller of outcasts.

Not that there is anything wrong with mocking Christianity - just that I can't see what is particularly offensive about a transsexual Jesus.

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2015 21:38

"It is mocking Christianity and that is the writers aim."

In what way?

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 12/11/2015 21:39

I reckon the Op is Susan Anne White.

VestalVirgin · 12/11/2015 21:52

This play is about as offending as portraying Jesus as a white person in blackface.

I don't see how it mocks Christianity. Though one could say that it mocks women. Who, unlike Christians, actually are an oppressed class.

Manamanah · 12/11/2015 22:02

"As a practising Christian myself, I have no interest in attacking the church or mocking the church or make fun of the church or in anyway being blasphemous or offensive."
A quote from Jo Clifford, the play's writer. But like I said pointythings, why let facts get in the way.

pointythings · 12/11/2015 22:05

I don't think I ever said I agreed it was mocking Christianity? Confused

I just said that no-one has the right not to be mocked or not to be offended.

Manamanah · 12/11/2015 22:08

Pointythings apologies-that should have been directed at roseforarose. I'll go put my specs back on Blush

BearFoxBear · 12/11/2015 22:11

My friend is involved in it and I can assure you that both she and the play are bloody awesome Grin

Pigeonpost · 12/11/2015 22:26

ODFOD

pointythings · 12/11/2015 22:27

No problem, manamanah. BTW I have you as my mobile ringtone. Grin

Roseforarose · 12/11/2015 22:29

Try me! But the problem is that Muslims in this country very rarely do anything mock-worthy. And they do not expect special privileges, or impose their beliefs on me. Unlike Christians
Maybe not in this country, try living in Syria or Iraq, there are many over there who most certainly would impose their beliefs on you.I wasn't aware of any Christians going round chopping heads off for being the wrong type of Christian or throwing gays off high buildings. ..... but let's not dwell on all that. I'd still like to know what special privileges Christians are after in this country.
It doesn't mean people who are offended think transsexuals are offensive at all. It is the intention of the writer to mock Jesus, he's holding him up as an object of ridicule and to say that if you are offended must mean that you see transsexuals as offensive is ridiculous. What would be his intentions if he didn't want to mock or offend.

I'm about as offended as I would be if it was a play about Jesus being a tortoise. It's all pretend anyway.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 12/11/2015 22:41

I bet Jesus IS a tortoise ThatsNot.

That would be a lovely story.

"He's not a tortoise, he's the Messiah!"

Manamanah · 12/11/2015 22:55

She, the pronoun you were looking for is she. Roseforarose displaying the sort of narrow-minded bigotry I'd expect from someone whose best defence of their own religion is attack of another.

Roseforarose · 12/11/2015 23:00

Manamama just because he said he has no intention of mocking or making fun of the church doesn't absolve him. He knows very well it will do but he continues to do so. That's like me calling someone an ugly bastard but then saying, "I never meant to insult you though." But we mustn't let these facts get in the way either.
