Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Confused. Not a sod. Not cranky. Just bemused that people are bemused by the topic. Just hide it . A lot of us like it. And thankfully it's here to stay.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:10

Well hopefully she will press Hide. But that doesn't mean she can't discuss the anxiety it has provoked.

Stop being so bossy.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:11

Exactiy SecretWitch I'm not getting the drama.

reni2 · 07/11/2015 23:11

I'm a prepper. I have a torch in the hallway and I always get enough wine in to survive a bank holiday. Because I insist on healthy eating and never allow the kids half the sweets they are given we have enough chocolate to live of that alone for a few days Grin.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:12

She should come on to thecPreppers topic and discuss her anxiety there Wink

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:13

That's nice. Take the piss out of someone's anxiety.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:14

I'm not.

BasicBanana · 07/11/2015 23:15

Wtf, I do well to have enough bagels to feed everyone breakfast and do well to have a raincoat and a half tank of petrol and there are people with stockpiles of all sorts.

It's a window on another world, one where no one ever runs out of loo roll. I just can't imagine.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:15

Your winky face says otherwise I'm afraid.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:17

We prep, because we're concerned (anxious?). If the op is concerned or anxious, then being prepared is the right way to go. Surely.

Amibambini · 07/11/2015 23:17

I wouldn't consider myself a 'prepper' and don't have a bug out bag, but I do try and keep enough food in the cupboards for a couple of weeks. And despite living in a urban area our home is very off grid which I'm very comfortable with. Reason being, seeing people in the state of New York driven to looting after Hurricane Sandy. As much as no one ever mentions it here in MN, climate change is here, it's happening and as much as I think it's not the end of humanity the likelihood of us experiencing some really weird, out of the ordinary shit is increasing. I think it's likely that even modern, wealthy parts of the world are vulnerable to 'shocks'; events that can disrupt food or power supply.

I have no intention of surviving a full society meltdown but having a few weeks food & water in to tide us over a 'shock' is a practical response to growing climate instability. Climate is tied in to social stability. Look at what a 7 year drought did to Syria. It's not THE reason for the shitstorm there but it is a real factor. Anyway, sorry for getting all serious and mentioning the topic that shan't be mentioned.

warmastoast · 07/11/2015 23:18

Throughthickandthin that's actually a good idea.. Denial and anxiety would probably be quite serious issues to consider in the run up to a crisis. One of the major reasons why the ebola crisis spread as it did, although MSF was sounding the alarm for months before the rest of the world took notice and real action.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:19

You are just like the posters on the Preppers board Ami just normal.

capsium · 07/11/2015 23:19

I've lots of books which would help with any boredom. Failing that they would tear up for loo roll.

MotherOfFlagons · 07/11/2015 23:21

thickandthin I'm not either. I had a read of the prepping board the other day and found it interesting, amusing and instructive in equal measures.

I'm sorry, perhaps I am wrong, but this is just my opinion. I just find it really hard to understand why it causes actual anxiety in some posters that people on an internet forum are discussing how many gallons of water they might store in the event of a power cut.

Given the huge diversity of topics on MN (I'm actually a bit surprised there was even one on ebola), one tiny board attracting a very limited number of posters is utterly meaningless.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:22

Thanks warmastoast, I am normal and we aren't all freaks, as much as Mitzy would like it to be. It could be as little as being snowed in, but prep stuff is important, and with a little preparation anxiety goes as you don't need to worry about it anymore.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:24

Who did I describe as a 'freak'?

howtorebuild · 07/11/2015 23:24

The freaky types are those threatening to shoot and stab preppers.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:26

'I just find it really hard to understand why it causes actual anxiety in some posters that people on an internet forum are discussing how many gallons of water they might store in the event of a power cut.'

Anxiety attacks aren't always rational, I assume the OP hasn't looked at the board in detail but has been made aware of its existence and has then started stressing that it might indicate upcoming heavy duty situations.

capsium · 07/11/2015 23:27

But you can't prepare for every eventuality. This is where anxiety may come in.

However human beings can pull together and be resourceful, remembering this, is worth more than a few tins of food. Quality of life is what matters, ultimately.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2015 23:27

Me too mother. I asked mnhq for a topic because I am quite interested in it. It seems it has been requested before but rejected. This time happily I got a lot of support and help enough to grant us a topic. And it has been a very busy topic.

Tbh I'm pissed off people are pissing on our chips. if you don't like it, hide it. Same as any other MN topic.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:28

And that works both ways. If you don't like this thread hide it!

So simple really.

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2015 23:29

I saw there was a new topic, raised my eyebrows a teeny bit, checked the freezer and pantry and candle supply decided I would be ok then hid it.

Seems sensible to have stuff in if at all possible, just in case though. Don't think there's any need to be anxious about the Topic.

warmastoast · 07/11/2015 23:35

Mitzy it's not reasonable for posters who just got granted a space for a pretty harmless discussion of interest to them to come to its defence? There's a lot of reasonable arguments being presented here and this is an AIBU thread after all- generally inviting a range of perspectives..

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/11/2015 23:37

Sure they can defend it but scoffing at someone's anxiety is a bit off I think.
