£65 for a band you need to be off your face on MDMA to listen to???? Really?

I also hate The Smiths. Apparently I should be banished from Manchester.

Yanbu about the stone roses but yabu about the MDMA - no self respecting drug taker would waste good drugs listening to that.

madmomma · 06/11/2015 11:34

I think they fitted the vibe at the time. But it's over, and they weren't good enough to deserve rehearing. It's just a nostalgia thing for 40yr olds I think

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 11:43
Shock

YABVU

I bloody love the Stone Roses and really think their music has stood the test of time. Probably listen to them more than any other band.

Ian Brown is shit live though.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 11:44

I hate The Smiths though. Just can't bear Morrissey's voice.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 06/11/2015 11:46

I love them but then I also loved Oasis and all their new incarnations too Grin

I understand it may not be to everyones taste mind Hmm wouldn't the world be boring if we all enjoyed the same music Wink

Madmomma has it right that its pure nostalgia! What's wrong with that?

herbaceous · 06/11/2015 11:46

At last. Someone saying what I've always thought. The Stone Roses are totally 'meh', and Ian Brown's voice is like nails down a blackboard.

And, despite being a student in the late 80s, I never liked the Smiths. Though naturally couldn't admit it. The jangly guitar is jolly enough, but the 'melody' is always the same three bloody notes (of a minor third, I believe) and is so TEDIOUS.

KatharineClifton · 06/11/2015 11:49

YABVU!

Their deubt album is still one of the best albums ever!

YANBU about Morrisey though.

R0nJ0n · 06/11/2015 11:52

I have no strong feeling about the Stone Roses, but I cannot stand The Smiths. By rights I should be a Smiths fan, I'm the right age and I was the right kind of mopey, bedroom dwelling teenager. However Morrissey's voice is like nails down a blackboard to me.

BastardGoDarkly · 06/11/2015 11:53

Yabu!

LittleMiss77 · 06/11/2015 11:53

Spot on OP! Stone Roses are one of the most overrated bands on the planet.

TheHiphopopotamus · 06/11/2015 11:57

The Stone Roses were the front runners of Britpop (much of which was shit, I'll grant you), but I think their music has stood the test of time, although they're apparently appalling live (Much better off going to see The Charlatans Wink)

Hated The Smiths when I was school, but they've grown on me and Morrissey is a poet in music form. I love his lyrics.

MaidOfStars · 06/11/2015 11:58

Having spent an hour this morning, on four devices, and now £270 lighter for the effort, I cannot express how unreasonable you are Grin

One of the key bands of my generation for British indie music. One of the greatest debut albums ever.

I saw their reunion gig at Heaton Park. Music aside, they were surprisingly tight and technically flawless. No shambling drug nonsense evident at all.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 06/11/2015 12:01

the Stone Roses passed me by

I liked the Smiths but Morrissey is a cunt

[lighthearted]

KatharineClifton · 06/11/2015 12:01

Just putting this here Grin

Bolshybookworm · 06/11/2015 12:01

YABU, their debut album is still brilliant. They were never classic "britpop" though (more Madchester), they just got taken along for the ride. I've seen them live and they were awesome, Ian browns voice was fine. That was back in the day though (I went to see the clothes show live on the same day- best day ever!).

YANBU on The Smiths though, Morrisey is a gigantic wazzock.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 12:03

I never think of them as being anything like Britpop. Britpop was a fun old time but 90% of the music is absolute pants.

Qwertybynature · 06/11/2015 12:11

YABU op Shock. Although as much as I love Ian Brown no amount of auto tuning can save him live.

Johnny Marr is good live and I like The Smiths but Morrissey is a massive bellend.

Maid of Stars Envy I was logged at 9.00 too.

TheHiphopopotamus · 06/11/2015 12:18

When I said they were the front runners of Britpop, I think I meant that without The Stone Roses there would have been no Oasis, Blur etc. I probably worded it incorrectly but I think in the late 80's music had been moving more towards the electronic dance music made on a machine.

The Stone Roses inspired a lot of kids to play music in a band again (just my opinion though Smile)

bangbangprettypretty · 06/11/2015 12:18

Stone Roses fans might recognise my username from the lyrics to Where Angels Play (their version on the DVD of Made of Stone is rather lovely with the rapport between Reni and Mani).

Heaton Park was brilliant and I'm interested to see if there'll be new music, Noel Gallagher on Soccer Saturday apparently said something like 'the Roses are blooming' the other week.

I have a bit of a crush on Reni from back on the day too, he is so technically accomplished with good arms!

Jengnr · 06/11/2015 12:22

Love the Roses. Not going this time though.

Right with you in the Smiths though. And YY to whoever said Morrissey is a cunt!

YokoUhOh · 06/11/2015 12:23

Love them

BUT

They are responsible for Oasis, and the type of music 'fan' who listens to nothing but white men standing around playing the guitar and considers their taste superior to that of, say, fans of hip-hop or R&B.

Which is a shame, because The Roses themselves have an incredibly varied taste in music, from soul and funk (they were scooter boys) through to reggae and dance music.

So YABU and YANBU.

WallToWallBastards · 06/11/2015 12:25

Hahaha I do have a soft spot for Bez. He's my career aspiration should I fail my degree.
I don't know anyone who "was there" who liked them either. I do think £65 is a bit steep to stand with ketted up teenagers in bucket hats though!

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/11/2015 12:26

Don't really get the Stone Roses but think The Smiths are brilliant. Morrisey is a self important twat, almost goes without saying, but he had/has a wonderful voice and way with words.

I'm 27 though so have picked them up signicificantly after their heyday.

wowis · 06/11/2015 12:28

yabvvvvu roses are epic saw them at heaton park- epic. Just got tickets for etihad next year can't frigging wait!!

WallToWallBastards · 06/11/2015 12:29

I found myself enjoying The Smiths quite recently but my drink had been spiked Grin I have them on my iPod, living a lie to fit in.
