£65 for a band you need to be off your face on MDMA to listen to???? Really?

I also hate The Smiths. Apparently I should be banished from Manchester.

When I said they were the front runners of Britpop, I think I meant that without The Stone Roses there would have been no Oasis, Blur etc.

Ah yes, I see! Although I think the world really could have done without Oasis and the countless dull bands that followed in their wake. Oasis really is a band whose music doesn't warrant revisiting.

YokoUhOh · 06/11/2015 12:31

'British Indie Music' - a false construct. Stock, Aitken and Waterman were an indie label.

This topic is actually a massive bugbear of mine, as I like 'indie' but I also like countless other genres and have spent many an hour arguing that a Girls Aloud single is better than 99% of indie music of the same era.

Sorry for slightly goady de-rail but, much as I love the Roses, most of their fans could do with listening to some of the seminal bands that influenced them, rather than sticking to a diet of guitar music.

mileend2bermondsey · 06/11/2015 12:33

Im going watching a Stone Roses, Oasis, The Smiths and New Order tribute band concert soon. I cant effing wait. I also think Oasis are one of the greatest bands ever and Noel Gallagher is a fantastic lyricist (listen to some of his newer stuff and Oasis' last album). I am also from Manchester, so I may be massively fucking slightly biased but I think YABU.

Like others I think The Smiths are good but Morrisey is a twat of the highest order. I am also not 40, in fact I wasnt even born when any of the bands mentioned above formed.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 12:33

Depends on the Girls Aloud single!

whatdoIget · 06/11/2015 12:34

When did being off your face on mdma become a bad thing??

YokoUhOh · 06/11/2015 12:35

Dingleberry never a truer word spoken! But all of them are better than Embrace.

MaidOfStars · 06/11/2015 12:36

It better be Biology.

That song is exceptionally well-arranged.

Ubik1 · 06/11/2015 12:38

I love the stone roses

But they were shit live

I remember a main stage field emptying out as they were so terrible. Everyone went to see underworld live instead.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 12:39

Embrace. Had forgotten about them! Athlete (that bloody Wires song makes me 'grrrrrrr'), Starsailor (the mawkish 'daddy was an alcoholic').......so many awful guitar bands.

mileend2bermondsey · 06/11/2015 12:41

Urgh just watched Oasis get butchered in the new JL advert

Moln · 06/11/2015 12:41

Of course YANBU to think that.

Your opinion is incorrect though.

Grin

However as a nostalgic 40 year old I'm probably definitely less interested in any new stuff than their music from the 90s.

WallToWallBastards · 06/11/2015 12:42

whatdoIget whatever floats your boat but I can do it for less than a month's food budget

OP posts:
YokoUhOh · 06/11/2015 12:43

Yes, Athlete and Starsailor were next in my Landfill Indie list.

Biology is an incredible arrangement. I think I love Girls Aloud even more than I love The Stone Roses.

WallToWallBastards · 06/11/2015 12:43

Dingleberry Wires is an absolute tune Shock

OP posts:
WoodleyPixie · 06/11/2015 12:45

I really like The Stone Roses but Ian Brown I appalling live. Doesn't stop me reminiscing about all the young and crazy days listening to them, planning the next rave/club etc. I feel ancient typing that though, i'llbe 40 next year!

Ubik1 · 06/11/2015 12:46

I always fucking hated starsailor.
And oasis.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 12:49

Sorry WallToWall I hate it! Grin

A boss of mine used to put it on all the time and tell us how deep it was, how moving it was, how like totally amazing it was.

Meh.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 12:52

Lush have reformed too. I like Lush though and think they were much better than many of their shoegazey counterparts.

Saw Miki Berenyi on a music programme on BBC4 a few weeks ago. Was funny seeing her without fire engine red hair.

WallToWallBastards · 06/11/2015 12:54

Dingleberry In primary school, I was asked more than once to play Sally Cinnamon in assembly and it was so embarrassing because I was shit at guitar and singing still learning ;)

OP posts:
DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 12:57

Ah Wall that sounds so cute. I'd love to see an 8 year old playing Sally Cinnamon at a school assembly, tongue sticking out in concentration. Sr Catherine Mary never suggested anything like that at our school. Hymns all the way Grin

Qwertybynature · 06/11/2015 12:59

Jesus walltowall a monthtly food shop?! You need a new supplier Grin

mewkins · 06/11/2015 13:00

Nah I love them but I wouldn't pay to see them live.

Lottapianos · 06/11/2015 13:03

'Morrisey is a self important twat, almost goes without saying, but he had/has a wonderful voice and way with words'

I'm a humungous, devoted Morrissey fan but I think that's a fair description of him Grin

I never thought that much of the Stone Roses until I saw Shane Meadows' film 'Made of Stone'. They are a terrific band, really great musicians. Could happily live without Ian Brown though. The film is fabulous by the way

MorrisZapp · 06/11/2015 13:13

I'm sure you're a nice person OP but you are so wrong on this you couldn't be wronger.

They are the best band of all time, as I naively thought all decent people acknowledged.

Having said that, the lifelong adoration that sees middle aged mums like me part with 167 quid for top tier stadium tickets can only be formed in youth.

I was 19. It was summer all year round and I drank and danced every single night of my life.

As pp said, their Heaton Park gig was flawless. I'm excited though to enjoy the euphoria this time with added access to toilets and a bar.

SEE YOU AT THE ETIHAD!!

YokoUhOh · 06/11/2015 13:17

Lotta I must admit I hated the Shane Meadows film, I thought it was a fawning, fanboy load of nonsense! He's a typical 'love my music' fan, who would then go on to quote a whole bunch of landfill indie as his musical inspirations. The worst bit of that film was the 'queuing up for Warrington show' (heavy-handed and boring way of signifying the 'cult' of The Roses).

Actually, now we're on Shane Meadows, can we just discuss what an absolute pile of cringeworthy toss his films and TV programmes are? Unmitigated shite.
