Yes, I know I am really, but this is about as exciting as my life gets at the moment Grin. Well, that, and the fact that I treated myself to a new ironing board yesterday...

It is very poignant- I have worked with many people who are alone at Christmas and it made me think of them. I can't say it evoked the warm, fuzzy "Christmas is coming" feeling for me unlike their other ads. However, it's better that there is more awareness of how other people are spending their Christmas whether they are alone or facing other problems. Well done JL I say.

YY Mama During an episode of The Bill.

ChipsandGuac · 06/11/2015 15:59

I thought it was great! And really hit the message of how lonely it can be for our elderly, especially at Christmas. Like in that Sainsburys a Day in the Life one where the guy makes the precisely cooked Christmas dinner and then sits down alone to make it. That bit made me cry every time.

RatOnnaStick · 06/11/2015 16:18

So tempted to post the Star Wars version...

PeasinPod1 · 06/11/2015 16:29

I think its beautiful.
My 22 month old DS has sat transfixed watching it (so far- 9 times) every time it ends he shouts "MORE"!

Redglitter · 06/11/2015 18:19

Over rated as usual. Had it been an advert by Age Concern then yes spot on. But a stores Christmas Ad? Totally missed the mark. I wonder if people would enthuse about it so much if it had been anyone other then JL who did it

Foslady · 06/11/2015 18:20

When I said in previous tears I hated the JL ads as all they did was say to me 'If you aren't a 2.4 family with mum and dad at home your Christmas will be shit' and last years classic 'If you're not in a relationship your Christmas will be shit' I was told to get over myself by some people.

Amazing how many people are now saying 'All it will do is hammer home to the lonely that they have to face a lonely Christmas'.......Hmm

MadeMan · 06/11/2015 18:39

"just kept thinking about the elderly people sitting on their own at Christmas"

You're never alone with a telescope and a tower block full of people with their curtains open across the street.

theshooglypeg · 06/11/2015 19:33

I'm afraid all I could think was "Why is there an elderly man on the moon? And why hasn't he asphyxiated, without a spacesuit?"

Think I may have missed the message.

honeyroar · 06/11/2015 19:49

Yet another great song sung as pathetically as can be! Why can't they use originals!!

Didn't do much for me. It's ok. Just about every other Xmas ad I've seen so far has been better. When you've seen one JL Xmas ad you've seen them all really.

MadeMan · 06/11/2015 23:56

Just watched it and I hate the advert.

What is it about these modern female singers and their half-arsed approach to singing properly; it's like she can't be bothered to try.

Redglitter · 07/11/2015 00:52

Just read that it cost £7 million to make.
I didn't realise they'd actually flown the old man to the moon.

£7 million!!!!!!

AnnieNoMouse · 07/11/2015 08:15

I'm anticipating the Daily Mail sad face story on 27/12. Mother and child sitting on sofa, quote from mother "I bought the John Lewis telescope because Johny couldn't wait to see the man on the moon, just like in the advert. Our Christmas was ruined when he tried it out on Christmas night and all he could see was a load of craters. He couldn't even see the little house, let alone the man who lives in it. We were meant to go and visit my 90 year old grandfather who lives alone on Boxing Day but naturally we had to cancel and go to John Lewis to return the gift. Johnny is devastated."

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2015 08:23

7 million? Just how? Shock Just think what Age Concern could have done with that.

thunderbird69 · 07/11/2015 09:56

It certainly seems to have been very successful - I've read 9on here and elsewhere) so many comments of -

  1. Well done for John Lewis for raising awareness of older people on their own at Xmas
  2. My child now wants a telescope

kerching!!

TheHiphopopotamus · 07/11/2015 10:58

The advert- meh.

But the song...oh, Christ my ears! It's like nails down a blackboard. What it is about whimsical cover versions of classic songs. Truly awful Confused

MadeMan · 07/11/2015 10:59

Yeah the song is like that terrible Twinings advert all over again.

MarshaBrady · 07/11/2015 11:00

£7 million unbelievable.

MadeMan · 07/11/2015 11:01

Maybe that's the point of them though; so terrible you never forget = advertising job well done!

73dexter · 07/11/2015 12:13

I was just looking at the JL 'Man in the Moon' gifts and it doesn't seem that any money from the sale of these items is going towards Age UK (except the Christmas cards). I'm a bit surprised by that.

Tessa1402 · 07/11/2015 12:25

I Love The Advert, Very Heart Felt Although I Didn't Shed A Tear, Can't Wait To Show Everyone Who Means Something To Me Just What They Mean To Me This Christmas :)

Tessa1402 · 07/11/2015 12:26

The Song Was Much Better Sung By Oasis, For The Theme Tune To 'The Royal Family' TV Series, I Prefer Their Version. x

Tapirs · 07/11/2015 13:19

How the actual fuck did that cost 7 million to make?

Really? How?

And it was shite.

ratspeaker · 07/11/2015 13:22

www.theguardian.com/media/tvandradioblog/2015/nov/06/john-lewis-christmas-advert-who-is-moon-hitler

Now apart from so many things wrong with the science I do wonder if the exile on the moon was their customer services controller, so far out of touch with reality.

DingleberryDip · 07/11/2015 13:26

Easy peasy.

A JL Xmas ad probably takes twelve months to make. They've probably already started on next year's! Can you imagine the hundreds of people involved in the process, the search for the 'star', the music rights. The ad agency, finding the right director......

They've cleverly turned their ad into an event. £7m is probably a bargain in order to become the one shop that's synonymous with Crimbo.
