Yes, I know I am really, but this is about as exciting as my life gets at the moment Grin. Well, that, and the fact that I treated myself to a new ironing board yesterday...

I can't believe it's only the 6th Nov andIhave seen it. I know what happens and the 'plot'. How many more times will I have to endure it now? Hopefully the short version will appear quite quickly.

flamingtoaster · 06/11/2015 10:03

I would have liked it to have ended with a spaceship bringing him down to the little girl's house for Christmas lunch.

Baaaaaaaaaaaa · 06/11/2015 10:04

What a lovely advert sniffs

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 06/11/2015 10:07

the true meaning of xmas

73dexter · 06/11/2015 10:09

Was there any mention of Age Concern in the advert?

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 06/11/2015 10:13

the cynics version

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 06/11/2015 10:14

Chilled, at least those adverts do what they are meant to - actually advertise a product. It's not patronising, missing the point, pretentious rubbish that JL seem to hash out every year. They wouldn't bother with any of this if they didn't think it would sell the telescope, or soft toy or whatever their over-hyped product is for next year.

Waitrose did a very plain Xmas ad a couple of years back, chosing to donate their budget to an actual charity instead. Don't need sickly sweet, 'if you don't cry at this, you're a heartless monster', rubbish to get a good message/advert out there. However, it's obvious this is going to be the form for years to come. As long as there are people willing to get all weepy over these things, they will keep laughing all the way to the bank.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 06/11/2015 10:16

I quite like it and as a pp said, I think it'll grow on me.

I really don't like the choice of song though. If it hadn't already been used on the Royle Family it would have been a good choice, but for most people it will just conjure up images of Jim in his pants. Grin

BreconBeBuggered · 06/11/2015 10:17

I can only see it without sound for the moment, so it left me cold. How does the Aurora version of the Oasis song sound? I hope Gallagher is prepared for a whole generation to think Oasis are covering an Aurora song next time the original is played.

I enjoyed the penguins last year, but now I can't hear anything by Tom Odell without thinking he sounds like a penguin. I quite liked him before that.

icouldjusteatacroissant · 06/11/2015 10:18

Well I tried not to get weepy over the JL ad, and I failed. I cried as it made me think of my poor old and lonely mum.

SurferJet · 06/11/2015 10:21

Ahh I'm crying - well done ( again ) JL.

Beautiful.

ratspeaker · 06/11/2015 10:22

Hmm.
Man living on moon, about as realistic as good customer service from John Lewis.

RattusRattus · 06/11/2015 10:23

Liking the Mulberry ad this year too. Not quite as good as last year's #winchristmas one but still quite funny.

myfriendsson · 06/11/2015 10:23

icouldjusteatacroissant I agree. I'm thinking about lonely people watching it too. Reminding of how alone they are. They'd as well be on the moon. Maybe if they'd at least had something at the end to highlight how it's important to keep in touch, or better still, visit, it wouldn't have made me feel so flat and sad.

Chipstick10 · 06/11/2015 10:24

Wow some pretty angry voices on here. It's an advert people. Chill.

TheJiminyConjecture · 06/11/2015 10:30

This advert is like MN bingo.

Old man watching young child through a telescope.
Helium balloons
Man all alone - family gone NC so either he or they are bastards.

All we need is a clip of a p&c space being used inappropriately and it'll be AIBU in advert form!

Shutthatdoor · 06/11/2015 10:38

Well, I loved that. It felt quite "stripped back" compared to previous years.

The millions that they have apparently spent on it they need to strip it back a bit more Shock

LondonHuffyPuffy · 06/11/2015 10:48

KnockMeDown - Flowers for you. I would give you a cuddle but this is MN so I'm not allowed.

Bah Humbug to the rest of you cynics Grin

I liked it

Love it. Partly because it feels like they looked in the head of my DD (about the same age as girl in the film) - currently obsessed about space - and put her thoughts in the film. Hope they do sell telescopes because after this, we're going to need one...

Marcipex · 06/11/2015 11:09

Whiny song.
Lonely old man in cabin on lunar surface....would be sad if didn't look so daft.
Quite sweet little girl, doing nothing much.

Final scene....old man still lonely but can see other people having fun.

Am I supposed to be moved? It's a load of twaddle.

DingleberryDip · 06/11/2015 11:12

Well I don't think they were going for gritty realism.

Ken Loache should do next year's!

ladydepp · 06/11/2015 11:15

Made me cry, just like every year.

Lovely....

I love John Lewis, a great British institution

prettyknackered · 06/11/2015 11:32

You can watch it now on youtube

No where near as good as monty was

MamaLazarou · 06/11/2015 11:34

What's so great about John Lewis Christmas adverts, then?

The only time I have ever been excited about an advert was in the 1980s when Madonna previewed her 'Like a Prayer' video during the ad break.
