I'm not. I know I'm not. I'm personally going to have a glass of wine and celebrate there being a significant amount of egg on the Tories' faces.

As far as I can tell, this is the sort of thing the HoL is for. They're supposed to be a revising chamber, yes? So they've told the Commons to go and revise this bill because it's bad. And now the Tories are all whinging because it's a finance bill, apparently, (despite all the shenanigans they used to make it easy to push through) and it's not faaaaaaiiiiir!

The bill as it stood was the equivalent of ripping down the scaffolding before the building work has actually began - rob the working poor of a chunk of their income in exchange for maybe jam tomorrow. I'm glad this has happened, not at all sure it will have any effect, but glad nevertheless.

I have never claimed tax credits of any kind, don't even get child benefit because of DH being a Yank, but I'm perfectly happy for my taxes to go to people who need it and work hard.

ravenAK · 26/10/2015 22:02

Bit confused by 'great unwashed', Milksnatcher.

I understand that it's an outdated & sneery phrase aimed at persons of a perceived lower class than that of the wanker person using it.

But soap is terribly cheap these days - you can even buy nice shower gel in Poundland.

Perhaps you meant 'the great unfed'?

ghostyslovesheep · 26/10/2015 22:05

or the great underpaid Hmm

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 26/10/2015 22:05

The tories keep saying think of the whole package.

We will be £80 per year better off with the raising of tax allowance
£2500 worse off if tax credits cut
Don't use childcare so no gains there
Don't rent so no gain on housing benefit

Pointless talkingabout the whole package when a large majority can't access the whole package.

Trying to put major legislation through as a Statutory Instrument was indefensible.
The Lords have done the right thing.

Sadly it does not mean that Gideon will change his views because he's not good on evidence based decision making

Burnshersmurfs · 26/10/2015 22:17

Ft teacher here, in receipt of tax credits. I'm on UPS, as well.

MrPorky · 26/10/2015 22:20

You're on £35k+ and get tax credits? Perhaps reforms are required Wink

cruikshank · 26/10/2015 22:23

Hope IDS, Cameron and Osbourne all have trouble sleeping for once

They don't sleep. They just hang from the rafters.

TalkinPease · 26/10/2015 22:24

Removing tax credits from those earning above the median wage (around £18k) is logical.

Removing them from those impacted by the lower earnings cap is just wrong.

Burnshersmurfs · 26/10/2015 22:25

A bit less than that. Also a lone parent with 2 kids- over 7k of that money goes on child care alone- after tax. But thanks for the wink.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 26/10/2015 22:25

Teachers start on around 21k porky.

Yes OP, but they don't stay there for long and the teacher here is on UPS, so a minimum of around £35.5k. I am absolutely in support of the poorest and most vulnerable in our society being properly supported but I don't know why a teacher on £35k needs tax credits.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 26/10/2015 22:35

Presumably she isn't getting very much in TC if she is earning that amount? With my earnings, student finance and benefits I am on around the same amount as a LP with 2 dc, and it doesn't equate to the life of Riley.

I remember when ed balls the was trying to bring in legislation that would make it much harder to home ed.
Lord Lucas was a great champion for home schoolers and I have never forgotten that.
the house of lords does work.sometimes

I remember that Badders.......( shudders)

ottothedog · 26/10/2015 22:40

Thats the whole point of tax credits. 35k could be a great salary for a single person or a real stretch for a single parent family of 4, 3 kids all needing childcare

ravenAK · 26/10/2015 22:41

Because they need wrap-around childcare, MrPorky, breakfast clubs & afterschool.

I'm a well paid teacher & was the primary earner until my marriage broke down. Our childcare bill was always between a quarter & half of our joint earnings.

Had I stayed in the UK, yep, as a FT teacher & lone parent, I'd've been entitled to tax credits.

Instead I'm now teaching overseas (with dc at same, private school) & can make the sums work, but no, a single teacher with children can't cover their costs in the UK.

whirlybird42 · 26/10/2015 22:42

I was moved to tears watching the news. Thank God we've got some decent people in the h of l.

I really don't like the idea that's being suggested that one way to bridge the gap is to limit future claims. It was tax credits that helped me get back into work after xh did the dirty on me.
I got out of a hellish situation and into a job where I earn enough to barely need tax credits now.
I'd hate for others to be stuck in abusive relationships for financial reasons. I am so grateful they were there.

Burnshersmurfs · 26/10/2015 22:46

34k before tax. I'm not in London although cost of living here is quite high. I get about 35 quid a week to help with the child care costs. I'm not really going to bang on about my own case- but I do think that lone parents are vulnerable, and subject to quite significant additional stresses and expense; and I personally often find it quite difficult to keep our heads above water a lot of the time. Quite agree that I'm not among the worst off though.

WhyBeHappyWhenYouCouldBeNormal · 26/10/2015 22:47

Yes I get wildly irritated about the pigfucker's claims that the new living wage will replace any lost tax credits - not for the self employed it won't. and free childcare for under 4s isn't going to help the majority of claimants either. and the rising personal tax allowance really isn't going to make any difference to someone only earning 10,000 a year anyway.
