To think 'in your face Osborne?'

I'm not. I know I'm not. I'm personally going to have a glass of wine and celebrate there being a significant amount of egg on the Tories' faces.

I'm conflicted over this. I mean, they're not elected, shouldn't exist etc, but it turns out we do need them.

Possibly, more than the law allows.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/10/2015 21:22

Why whats happened. Not seen any news all dsy

MisForMumNotMaid · 26/10/2015 21:23

25th November and the Autumn statement seams to be key now to working out just how anyone will be affected.

MyCircusMyMonkeys · 26/10/2015 21:23

I think there's a lot of value to the unelected second chamber, and they've proved it again today.

If you have an appointed chamber, they aren't scrambling for re-election so they can work for what they think is right rather than what is popular at that moment. I think the stability offered by the institution of the Lords is well worth having.

sugar21 · 26/10/2015 21:23

YADNBU
Yes Gideon shove that where the sun doesn't shine.

Fairylea · 26/10/2015 21:24

Oh the irony of the non elected traditionally richer lot telling the "commons" not to pick on the poorest and most vulnerable.

A good day for those who need it most.

Fuck you George.

Darvany · 26/10/2015 21:25

Very true, Seamstress.

They slipped up and showed their true colours on this occasion but who knows what another four and a half years of rhetoric and propoganda will bring.

Charlesroi · 26/10/2015 21:27

I've a feeling that the Tories are not very upset about this (despite all the bluster). I think they knew they fucked up and have been looking for a face-saving way to revise their proposals. That back bencher who based her maiden speech on this subject doesn't seem to have got in much trouble, there have been Tory grandees speaking out (gawd bless you Nigel Lawson) etc.
I think it'll be a stay of execution for a year or so. Don't buy new shoes for the kids just yet.

themilksnatcher · 26/10/2015 21:28

So a bunch of over-privileged, unelected peers votes for the great unwashed to keep more of my hard earned taxes and this is apparently a cause for celebration?!? What a society we've built!

For the avoidance of doubt though this is a delay and not the death of the Bill. Unless Osborne/Cameron have a change of heart then they will push this though in spite of the Lords and our democratically elected government can get back to delivering the programme they were elected to.

Dawndonnaagain · 26/10/2015 21:31

Hopefully, there will be significant delay so that it comes up again just before the next election...

Funinthesun15 · 26/10/2015 21:33

Hopefully, there will be significant delay so that it comes up again just before the next election

It will be no more than a few years at most.

That is if it isn't pushed through anyway Sad

Shutthatdoor · 26/10/2015 21:34

Hopefully, there will be significant delay so that it comes up again just before the next election

Unfortunately it won't be.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 26/10/2015 21:34

Wow milksnatcher. Just wow. Well in the meantime my grubby kids will be grateful they can continue to have food on the table.

squidzin · 26/10/2015 21:35

A delay is the best outcome because an outright Fatal Motion would have resulted in a total rework of the HoL powers. Or a flood of Tory peers.

A delay keeps Osbourne under the spotlight.

This whole fiasco proves the Tories to be liars, and wholly incompetent.

Evil geniuses without the genius.

squidzin · 26/10/2015 21:36

Lol @ Thatcher the milk snatcher

Like, seriously?

Bubblesinthesummer · 26/10/2015 21:36

milksnatcher is correct in that they could just push this through. It wouldn't be the first time gvt goes against HoL.

needastrongone · 26/10/2015 21:37

I am perfectly happy for some of my high income household tax to go to those who do not have the same earning capacity, but who also work hard and make valuable contributions milk. What sort of a place would the world be if we all felt as you do?

twoboystwogirls · 26/10/2015 21:37

Yay!! I am so happy! Up yours Gideon and same to you milksnatcher!

herethereandeverywhere · 26/10/2015 21:38

This has cheered me up. I'm against the unelected Lords but they've done the right thing in this case.

the great unwashed to keep more of my hard earned taxes ...What a society we've built!

well indeed, themilksnatcher - you're name and attitude say it all - pride in a society that would take away from the poorest, accumilation of personal wealth at the heart of what you do, at the expense of others. I don't want to be part of your selfish utopia and I certainly hope I don't know you IRL.

squidzin · 26/10/2015 21:38

They won't push this through.

musicforthemasses · 26/10/2015 21:38

I thought it was good that it was cross party condemnation.

Former Conservative Chancellor Lord Lawson urged "tweaks" to the policy to reduce the "financial harm" to those on the lowest incomes, saying "it is not just listening which is required, but change"

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 26/10/2015 21:38

A delay is good. I hope everyone who has been worrying about this sleeps easier tonight.

Milksnatcher Hmm

herethereandeverywhere · 26/10/2015 21:39

[eek at typos, your/accumulation/ italics fail.. but you get my point]

squidzin · 26/10/2015 21:39

milksnatcher is being ironic...

squidzin · 26/10/2015 21:40

It's the best possible outcome
