to not want to be held hostage by a bus driver?

On the bus this morning. Gridlocked with other buses by the time we get to city centre. We are about 3 feet from the bus stop and stuck. About 15 of us want off. We wait ten mins then I ask the driver to let me off. He refuses as he's not allowed to open doors btween stops. And tells me if I open door he will call police.

Surely he HAS to let me off if I insist otherwise he is holding me hostage? After all I'm a grown up and can choose what risks to take.

Sorry Scremersford but the simple fact you are a Human Rights lawyer and you are referring to yourself as being 'abused' on this thread says it all really.

If you ARE a HR lawyer, presumably you actually act for people who really have been abused. If so, shame on you for bandying around such a term on a thread like this.

This thread has really made me want to re-watch Speed.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/10/2015 22:02

Grin mrsbert yabu speed was an awful film Grin watch Zombieland instead.

MrsBertMacklin · 24/10/2015 22:04

Bloody hell, Speed was made in 1994! I could have sworn I was out of school when it was released.

Is Zombieland the Woody Harrelson one - fell asleep when I watched it (from being knackered, rather than any reflection on the film), thanks for the reminder that I need to finish it.

I've not read the whole thread but yes it's annoying but about twenty years ago I was on a bus that stopped to let me off between stops....I stepped off the bus straight into the path of a cyclist...was very messy!

I assume this is why they can't do it.

Ohbehave1 · 24/10/2015 22:10

Pebble time. Here here. These people claim abuse but then again they will help a burglar claim against you because you held them " against their will" until the police turned up. Or some other jumped up human rights thing where the victim is worth less than the perpetrator.

It is nothing against running scared. It is all about making sure that human rights isn't used as a tool to allow dicks to get away with whatever they want. But that's what keeps arsehole lawyers and barristers in G&T and holiday homes.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/10/2015 22:21

Mrsbert yes! Great film. The whole Bill Murray bit is brilliant! It's a good time killer movie. And zombies are cool.
I'm touched by the posters sticking up for the drivers....Thank you. It's a thankless job at times and it feels nice to know not everyone thinks we suck Halloween GrinWine pebbles thanks again. The major incidents always end up sucking us in. When large numbers of people need removed from an area we are the obvious choice. Thanks for the Flowers

He was just doing his job. It might seem ridiculous to you and others, but if he let you off the bus at that point he could have risked his job. They have CCTV on nearly all buses now you know. Why should he risk his job for you like that?

Of course there are exceptions, such as you're about to be sick as mentioned above.

I once got called a "jobsworth" for refusing to sell alcohol to someone who didn't have ID. At the end of the day MY livelihood and MY job is the most important thing to ME, and in order to pay the bills I have to follow the rules to keep my job- just like the bus driver.

Spectre8 · 24/10/2015 22:49

There is a big difference to a bus driver pulling over at an undesignated bus stop to let you off to that of a bus standing still in traffic. The former means your safety is still assured, no chance of you stepping out infront of a cyclist, motorcyclist etc. the latter poses a far greater risk not to mention the gap to the road is much bigger so there is always a possibility you could put your foot down wrong and turn your ankle.

So YABU OP to expect a bus driver sitting in traffic to let you out.

My dad is a bus driver he will use his discretion but he will only let people off if he can safely pull over to the pavement, never when he is standing in traffic because if something happened to that person not only would he lose his job but he could be sued.

I would never ask anyone to do anything that would risk their job just like I wouldn't expect anyone to ask me either.

Mistrigirl I know it's not right but I feel wuite envious of you dhs speed type journey!

The nearest I have come to anything like that was on Sheffield tram
After leaving the city centre the driver put his foot down and both myself and dd likened it to grand theft auto.
(Which neither of us have ever played or seen).

It was like the feeling you get on a roller coaster.
