to have shouted at the knobhead who parked in a parent and child space?!

(pre-thread warning: I'm a bit of a grumpy arsehole most of the time)

So, about two hours ago, myself, DH and DD (6 months) went to tescos. Headed for the parent and child spaces, but they were all full. I saw a couple, probably in their mid-30's loading their shopping into their car - not a child or car seat in sight. So DH pulled into a space just across the way from them. I made a big show of struggling to get DD out of her car seat in the normal sized space, and as we walked past I said "nice to see you struggling to get all your kids into your car in that massive space" Angry

The man didn't know what to say, and the woman just put her head down and pretended not to have heard me.
Was I BU? Or does everyone else get The Rage when childless people park in parent and child spaces?!

I always park in P and C places if I have my dcs with me. They are 25, 22 and 13. As I survived the baby years somehow getting them in and out of normal parking spaces, I feel I have earned this boon. I am a parent with children . Get the fuck over it.

Mia1415 · 20/10/2015 22:41

Yanbu! This really drives me mad. The same as people parking in disabled spaces.
It's so selfish.
I once had to park in a normal space when DS was a baby & then couldn't get his car seat back in the car as someone had parked next to me. I had to stand there for 20 mins until he came back & before anyone asks I had parked in an empty area at the back of car park!
I've had the same problem when all the disabled spaces have been full, but at least then I can park my mum in her wheelchair, reverse out & block the car park while I get her in the car, unfortunately you can't do this with a tiny baby.

Mehitabel6 · 20/10/2015 22:47

We all had to manage in normal spaces when mine were babies. I think they cause more trouble than they are worth.
The easy solution is to put them in the far corner of the car park. Job done- you need extra space but you can walk. ( far corner on same side as the shop doors so that can't complain about crossing with traffic).
I can't think why shops put them near the doors in the first place.

I think because cars were narrower whilst parking spaces were much the same size, giving more room between cars. Cars have been made so much wider over the past 10-15 years.

A well-known myth. Because, guess what, our roads haven't got any wider.

CrohnicallyAspie · 21/10/2015 07:02

I'm pretty sure that cars have got bigger! Maybe roads haven't, but there isn't actually a 'standard' road size, some residential roads are a tight squeeze.

I looked it up and my first car was 1,550mm wide. I have a bigger car now, but the smallest car in the manufacturer's range is 1,660mm wide- that's 11cm difference, and if the other cars in the car park are similarly bigger then it will make a huge difference in the ability to open doors!

GiraffesCanDance1 · 21/10/2015 07:11

Yanbu. I tend to use click and collect or online groceries due to baby and 3yo but occasionally I use the supermarket and the p&c spaces are great.

People used to make do without cars, so maybe the critics on here to walk everywhere thereby leaving the whole car park for p and c

VashtaNerada · 21/10/2015 07:13

I love the idea of P&C spaces being further away! Much less tempting for ppl who don't need the extra space. Although that doesn't help those who are using them because they're unwell, pregnant etc.
I'm always fascinated by those who don't think bigger parking spaces should go to those with baby / toddler seats, or those who don't give up seats on buses for pregnant / disabled people. It's such a no-brainer to me that you just do what you can to be nice. The minute both my DC can do up their own seatbelts I'll stop using P&C spaces, I'd feel so guilty if I carried on. Yes, we never used to have them but there's lots of new things that make our lives easier.

honkinghaddock · 21/10/2015 07:20

Mia1415 - were you blocked in on both sides? If not why didn't you put the seat in via the other side.

Brioche201 · 21/10/2015 07:21

Why do you need to get the car seat out. Supermarket trolleys seem to have every type of baby and child seat imaginable

Mehitabel6 · 21/10/2015 07:22

The far side of the car park is such a simple idea- solves the problem completely.

Dawndonnaagain · 21/10/2015 07:22

They rearranged my local Tesco a few years ago. The P&C spaces are nearer to the store than the disabled spaces. They have been saying for years that they'll rectify it. They haven't. Until they do, if I am in the car with either of my (19 year old) dds, I shall continue to use the P&C spaces.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 21/10/2015 08:14

A well-known myth. Because, guess what, our roads haven't got any wider.

Most cars are wider than those from years ago, which is why most don't fit into garages particularly well. My focus is wider than an Austin Allegro or Datsun Sunny for example.

Or these 2 -

to have shouted at the knobhead who parked in a parent and child space?!

Or our old friend the VW Golf -

to have shouted at the knobhead who parked in a parent and child space?!
