To think I'm not alone with not falling for adverts

I can't remember the last time I bought anything that was ever advertised. I get all most of my food from my able and Cole and local Indy organic shop. I go on holiday in interesting places that the average person wouldn't of heard of. When I need a new car I just get whatever my friend with a garage has a good deal on. With electrics I always just get something that has good reviews from somewhere like which.

I really can't think if the last time I bought anything branded. I do feel like I'm the only one in modern Britain.

I don't understand who falls for adverts?

OP posts:

You sound lovely OP. Thank you for sharing your pearls of wisdom with us. Now fuck off and carry on with your joyless existence. and brush up on some basic grammar riles while your at it

Pedestriana · 17/10/2015 09:58

I'd buy something I wanted, whether or not it had been promoted by advertising, but I'm not going to rush out and buy the newest yogurt because it's advertised by semi-clad men/glamourous women/aids my digestive transit.

BeverlyGoldberg · 17/10/2015 09:58

I call goady fucker.

She's got to be a troll, no one is this objectionable naturally? Unless she had a shit time in Tonga and wishes she'd gone to Ibiza?

MardyBra · 17/10/2015 09:58

Grin at Fernandez versini and penny farthing!

ihatethecold · 17/10/2015 09:58

Look op. I've heard of Armenia.
I watch KUWTK Grin

NicoleWatterson · 17/10/2015 10:00

Abel and cole do my head in with their adverts through my door.

I think we should all just admit that the OP is much more alternative to anyone else in the whole wide world and therefore better.
Lets remember, clearly no one else has ever been to the places she has stayed on holiday - presumably you had to take your own accommodation with you? Because no one else has ever been there. Were they in awe of the 'foreigner'? i bet they didn't leave you alone for your stay (in your taken accommodation as no one has stayed there so theres no B&B's, hotels etc)

BadLad · 17/10/2015 10:00

I'm like you, OP. I of to be honest though and say that it's a pain in the arse to live like this. I really fancy a can of John Smiths tonight, but I've seen it advertised in the past, so now, obviously, I can never drink it again. The company who insure my car were advertising today, so that has to be cancelled first thing in the morning.

MardyBra · 17/10/2015 10:02

"I'm not going to rush out and buy the newest yogurt because it's advertised by semi-clad men/glamourous women/aids my digestive transit."

I saw one of those the other day for a yoghurt called Oykos. Surely a product which sounds like a Greek version of "oik" will never catch on.

pictish · 17/10/2015 10:05

Enjoy your bike ride along one of the national cycle routes.

To think I'm not alone with not falling for adverts
NicoleWatterson · 17/10/2015 10:09

I should introduce you to my 7 year old, she will be sat there colouring in not watching tv, an advert will come on and when they've finished saying what a great thing their product does and she goes "no it won't" - she won't even have looked up.

My 5 year old though "i want that"

NotEmptyNow · 17/10/2015 10:14

Armenia's very 'in' right now. Were you there to see the Kardashians on their recent visit? Oj I think everyone's being a tad harsh so I will answer your question.

I think it depends how you were brought up tbh. I grew up watching children's TV and not even realising that the ads were there to try and sell you the product, I thought they were just interesting mini programmes, completely unconnected to me. It would never have occurred to me in a million years to say to my mum 'I want that' as there was just zero chance of that happening. I'm basically the same now (with the exception of food, I'm pregnant atm and can't see anybody eating something without immediately wanting it) I can appreciate a good ad but I don't really connect it to going out and buying a product or using a certain company. I'm sure I'm not immune to advertising though as a lot of it is subconscious isn't it? DH was very spoilt as a child and got everything he asked for and more. Now he's big into 'retail therapy', falls for the whole 'this product will improve your life and make you feel better about yourself' malarkey. It's actually a big issue for him now, I feel sorry for him that he's been moulded into such a consumerist and it makes him very unhappy at times.

Incidently I know where Armenia and Tonga are, what I've never heard of is this Abel and Gable or whatever it's called.

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 17/10/2015 10:17

Another regular poster on the wind up thinking she is hilair..
Im so sorry to tell you this isnt funny

WheresMyBurrito · 17/10/2015 10:19

Surely OP you should be ordering from a local veg box scheme rather than Abel & Cole? Hmm y'know, one that doesn't advertise, rather than shoving flyers everywhere left right and centre like A&C.

(In all seriousness I realise you're probably taking the piss, but my local greengrocers do veg boxes at a fraction of the prices A&C charge. No advertising, just heard of them via a friend. Do I win now? Grin)

NotEmptyNow · 17/10/2015 10:21

Ha, I hadn't seen the comment about your amazing hair when I said people were being harsh. I take it all back.

Murloc · 17/10/2015 10:23

What a special snowflake you are!

Well done you. Make sure you give yourself a HUGE pat on the back for being so awesome and un-sheeplike. Confused

zeezeek · 17/10/2015 10:25

Like most people I watch adverts/see them (they are everywhere so I don't know what world you live in where you are completely unsullied by the things) and may think "oh that looks interesting". But that's as far as it really goes and generally, by the time it's finished or I've gone past I've forgotten about it. I tend to shop at a supermarket and buy what I need mostly based on prior experience or personal preferences....or what's available at the time.

I go on holiday to a town in Sweden on a regular basis that you've probably not heard of OP - though those who read books and look at advertising will have.

My children generally want every toy they see advertised at the time of the advert, then forget about most of them afterwards.

It's good to have a great lifestyle and great to support local businesses, however you can take being virtuous to extremes and it seems that you have and are now sounding decidedly superior and smug.

I would also be interested to know if your dislike of advertising extends to the Be Clear on Cancer campaigns, or other health related campaigns that use the media to raise awareness of certain signs and symptoms of serious illnesses?

I'm I weird cause I don't know what Abel and Cole is? I do know Tonga and Armenia though.

I find ads work in as far as they show stiff that I'd like to try, till I see the cost and then say fudge that and go and buy me everyday value ginger nuts for 25p :) (Dunked I milk obviously)

TempusEedjit · 17/10/2015 10:29

Why the eff are you on Mumsnet if you are so anti-advert?

Enjoy your cycle ride...because you're worth it.

I'm assuming this is flippant. If anyone wants info on Sustrans national cycle routes, there are loads of leaflets available in my local tube station (as well as on BoJo's cycle superhighways in London and local London routes). They're to be found quite close to the Boris bikes, otherwise known as Santander bikes, previously Barclays bikes.

Abel & Cole are big round here. The bloke who knocked on my door yesterday trying to get me to sign up told me that they were the biggest local organic food delivery brand.

love the OP's hypocrisy of 'who buys magazines?'/not swayed by branding line, but selecting purchases on the basis of Which? Reviews!!

V good OP, great wind-up attempt. But you've pushed it a bit too far now and are starting to look a wee bit silly Wink.

Bakeoffcake · 17/10/2015 10:48

You're quite deluded aren't you OP?

Never mind, you seem happy, so good for you, carry on being a twat

Bakeoffcake · 17/10/2015 10:54

My DD went for an interview with Abel and Cole for a summer job.

It didn't mention in the advert that it involved trudging around the streets knocking on strangers doors and trying to "persuade" them to buy their products.Hmm

EduCated · 17/10/2015 10:57

In all seriousness, people who believe they aren't affected by marketing are naive at best. Whether we like it or not, marketing is insidious and stretches far beyond TV and billboards. Why would it be industry apend millions on it if we were all able to just switch off and ignore it?

wizzywig · 17/10/2015 11:00

This is a bit of a dull AIBU
