To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad, especially when pregnant.

It's just a silly name, sorry but it is.

Here tommy, meet your brain surgeon for your major operation. Say hi dr kandy-rain.

I present Candy Cane.

OP, you are so reasonable. I can hear the staff room snigger already.

DannyFishcharge · 16/10/2015 14:48

Dear Lord.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 16/10/2015 14:51

What's her ds called?

reni2 · 16/10/2015 14:53

The niece will become very familiar with the Anti-Bullying Policy of every school and club her dd attends before she's old enough to either live up to the name or change it by deed poll.

MummaGiles · 16/10/2015 14:53

She must have had some bad pregnancy cravings to go from dreaming about haribos falling from the sky to actually deciding to name her child after the apparition.

LurkingOne · 16/10/2015 14:53

Do not apologise. In fact call her back and reiterate your disgust and tell her that Watermelondrea would be better than Kandy-Rain

Bloomsberry · 16/10/2015 15:03

I can't decide whether this is a real situation but the niece and sister are enjoying pulling the OP's leg (possibly cackling to see this thread appear on Mn) or whether the OP decided to do a thought experiment and post something that would make everyone get indignant with her for being snide and interfering until - ta-Daa! - the big reveal. A 30 year old woman is naming her child after a pornstar/ My Little Pony, and now everyone is falling over themselves telling her on no account to apologise.Grin

I have to disagree somewhat on the barrister front. Terribly middle-class frilly names like Maisie, Poppy etc will be stocking the high courts and medical specialisms in the years to come. I don't think that a Candy Smith (assuming she drops the Rain and the k) will stand out so very much.

ShamefulUsername · 16/10/2015 15:04

'I'm sorry I upset you but can't help the way I feel'

The contrast of replies on here before and after the name was revealed are hilarious. It is a truly awful name.

ForChina · 16/10/2015 15:08

Mis-spelling your child's name - Kandy with a K - is basically the equivalent of having a permanent tattoo put on your child's head that says 'My parents are thick'.

Damselindestress · 16/10/2015 15:13

YANBU. Sometimes names are just a matter of different taste and if it was just not your preferred style of name I'd have said keep quiet, but Kandy-Rain is truly awful. It's better your niece hears a negative comment now from a trusted relative while she has the chance to change her mind than hear many more negative comments from strangers after the child is born. It's even worse because she has given her son a normal name, so right from the start she has given him more chance to be respected and taken seriously in life and put her daughter at a disadvantage. You could say you are sorry you hurt her feelings and it wasn't your intention but you don't have to pretend to like the name, I think that ship has sailed anyway.

KandyRaine · 16/10/2015 15:13

I like it

madhairday · 16/10/2015 15:13

Oh how unfortunate. Poor child.

YANBU.

Sounds like one of those dreadful Rainbow Fairies books. 'Kandy-Rain the Showering Confectionary Fairy.'

GoblinLittleOwl · 16/10/2015 15:13

You will be doing her daughter a huge favour if it stops her mother choosing such a daft name.

MrsKoala · 16/10/2015 15:13

Ooooooh that's quite bad. I am usually the name defending queen on mn, humourlessly ruining threads lecturing everyone on being nasty. I have some wtf names for my dc too. But even i cant defend that. There is nothing redeeming about it. Oh dear.

Bloomsberry · 16/10/2015 15:14

LineyReborn · 16/10/2015 15:15

I like it too, Kandy-Raine.

EllyHigginbottom · 16/10/2015 15:17

You really need to talk some sense into these fools.

EllyHigginbottom · 16/10/2015 15:18

It's a bit like cockney rhyming for 'crack cocaine'.

Grin
LittleRedSparke · 16/10/2015 15:18

maybe she could be Candace(or Candice)-Lorraine in real life and then shorten to Kandy-Rain

Strokethefurrywall · 16/10/2015 15:19

Jesus Titty Fuck - it's mind numbingly awful.
I would really struggle to have something nice to see and I'm the muthafuckin queen of diplomacy...

SilverOldie2 · 16/10/2015 15:21

Thanks for the laugh OP, that is an atrocious name. Phone her and say it's chavtastic, although she may think that's good. Sorry, I know how much this is hated on MN but appropriate in this case - LOL.

squoosh · 16/10/2015 15:24

By any chance is there a ferocious elderly matriarch in the family who would down her knitting and her milk stout and head round, battleaxe in hand if she heard of the possibility of a soon to be Kandy-Rain in the family?

MrsJorahMormont · 16/10/2015 15:29

Sweet baby Jesus. Kandy Rain. I have officially heard it all now!

MrsJorahMormont · 16/10/2015 15:31

KandyRaine :o

Squoosh is right. You need an angry matriarch to save the unborn from the fate awaiting them!
