To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad, especially when pregnant.

It's just a silly name, sorry but it is.

Jesus Titty Fuck - it's mind numbingly awful.
I would really struggle to have something nice to see and I'm the muthafuckin queen of diplomacy...

Laughing so much Grin Grin

I don't think you really can sms her back and say its a lovely name darling niece, because that is just lying....and then you have to pretend to like the name for the rest of days. Just say something like, sorry I upset you, didn't meant to hurt your feelings. Just for gods sake, don't say its a cute name to make yourself feel better. Because its most certainly isn't......

Do you think its a trying hard here cool take on Carly Rae, she is that singer.....

Kandy Rain..... sounds like a Barney the dinosaur song....

AnyoneButAndre · 16/10/2015 15:40

I don't think you have to lie. I'd go the honesty route.

"Yes actually I do hate it, it's really not to my taste at all. But that's just because I am so very very old and square. Fortunately it's not a name for my child, it's a name for DN's child so as long as she loves it that's great."

Mind you I'd have no choice in the matter because I am the world's most incompetent liar.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 16/10/2015 15:52

The K is the horrific bit.

Candy is a lovely name that has belonged to some lovely women.

Raine can and almost inevitably will be dropped by kind people and maybe the girl herself.

But that 'K'.... Sad

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 16/10/2015 15:54

Maybe you could put the focus of your explanation on the 'K' issue?

ThatsDissapointing · 16/10/2015 15:54

Chippednailvarnish · 16/10/2015 16:14

I suppose it's better than Acid-Raine

BitOutOfPractice · 16/10/2015 16:14

The Beach Boys like the name Rhonda

Kandy Rain, not so much

AlpacaLypse · 16/10/2015 16:20

Inspired by this thread I've been wandering the internet in search of a definitive answer to the question, 'Can a Registrar refuse to accept a name?'

Not that I think Kandy-Raine can be refused purely on the grounds of appalling taste, but I was wondering if registrars have the right to not accept a name that is spelt like something or sounds like something really rude or offensive. For example, Fuk or Niga. Anyone know?

I do remember the registrar carefully writing out the initials of both my twins to check that they didn't spell something awful or embarrassing, and in fact we shoved in one extra middle name to save one of our dds from having her leg pulled in later life. But I'm not sure if that was just something that particular registrar did from wisdom and experience, or standard procedure.

Madbengalmum · 16/10/2015 16:22

Sounds like a great porn star name!!!

Kent1982 · 16/10/2015 16:27

Oh no i would have thought she was pulling my leg. Poor kandy rain.

On a more serious note you could say it's grown on you it was just that your not keen on rain as a weather It's a miserable weather

StayWithMe · 16/10/2015 16:30

You should point out to her that foot Locker do a trainer/sneaker called 'candy reign'.

To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch
Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 16/10/2015 16:30

At least it wasn't spelt with an I. With a little heart over it. Or Kane instead of Raine.
See could be loads worse.

CalonDu · 16/10/2015 16:34

Staywithme those trainers! I always wondered what had happened to Fenella from Chorlton and the Wheelies... Sad

Fenella. Much better name.

KANDY FUCKING RAIN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

CookieMonsterIsOnADiet · 16/10/2015 16:41

You were very restrained, it's an awful name. Poor child.

XWIsBonkers · 16/10/2015 16:42

Fair to say you are right
Every child has a right not to be insanely named
A BF wanted to name his son Hercules Lothario. Didn't speak to me for weeks when I told him he was being egotistical.
Said son christened Sam and am godfather
There are some happy endings

Brioche201 · 16/10/2015 16:45

Are you sure it is not Candice Raine?
