To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad,especially when pregnant.

If you choose a really "unique" ridiculous name for your child, then you have to expect mixed reactions.
If you tell people the name before the baby is born, then you are giving people an opportunity to save the child express their concerns before it's too late.

Truly hideous name. The spunk/stripper/porn thing is going to be a major factor in ruining the poor child's life.

My kids both have very Welsh names. We got the disapproval thing quite a lot from the Saxon side of the family but we live in Wales and the DS's name is actually getting quite popular. All the males in our family have the same middle name except one. He was supposed to have the same middle name but it was changed at the last moment when his initials were written down(DWP) Because it's Welsh for stupid.

That is a shit name.

A name is a present. It's something you give to somebody. Somebody who is a baby, then a child, then a teenager, then an adult lawyer or brick layer, or doctor or whatever. You don't give people things that you personally like. You give people things that you think they will like.

If she likes Kandy-Rain so much why doesn't she change her name to it?

Whenever someone announces a name that I don't like, my go-to response is, "well it's not something I'd choose, but if you like it, that's all that matters." I think they usually get that's my way of saying it's awful, without actually say it is.

My most recent use of this response was in September, when my cousin and her DH (this in over in the States) named their daughter Katzy. I shit you not. It's to honour her DH's mother, whose maiden name is Katz. Imagine growing up being named Katzy. Poor mite.

Just read your DN is 30 and I'll be honest I'm quite surprised by the name choice for her age, I'd have associated with someone much younger. Sorry if that's generalisation just what I thought

I've got to be honest, some of the names I hear being discussed on here (Ivy, Agatha to name 2) just seem ugly and oldfashioned to me but Kandy-Rain just goes too far the other way.
