To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad, especially when pregnant.

It's just a silly name, sorry but it is.

Oh dear.

That is a stripper name. No real person is called that.

reni2 · 16/10/2015 13:13

Suggest Zweet Torrent or Konfectionery Drizzle.

hairbrushbedhair · 16/10/2015 13:13

It's one of those porn star names you get on those facebook quiz things to find out your porn name

Are you sure they're not winding you up?

How old is your niece?

pigsDOfly · 16/10/2015 13:14

Yeah Squoosh, No-Hope would definitely be an improvement, seriously.

Everythingwillbeok · 16/10/2015 13:15

My niece is 31.

OP posts:
Zame · 16/10/2015 13:15

I reckon they're both winding you up op :)

MatildaTheCat · 16/10/2015 13:15

I believe there are certain cases where the Registrar can actually refuse to put a name on the child's birth certificate due to its awfulness. Not sure quite where the boundaries of terribleness lie, though. Hmm

This could be the poor child only hope. Sad

Is there any chance whatsoever she could be persuaded to use it as a lovely and unusual middle name? I don't believe there are many people who have achieved highly in life with this particular name. And yes, your name does make a difference in how you get on in life.

pigsDOfly · 16/10/2015 13:15

I mean that, Squoosh. It actually would be an improvement.

Flutterbutterfly · 16/10/2015 13:16

God that is an awful name.

When presented with awful names I've always said wow that unusual. ( worry if everyone says that to you)

Zame · 16/10/2015 13:16

(I really hope they are)

woolythoughts · 16/10/2015 13:17

not the worst i've heard......

Friend of mine (living in another country) had twins and called them Pebbles and Bambam

Everythingwillbeok · 16/10/2015 13:17

My niece is 30 to the poster who asked.

I agree pigs! No-Hope would be leaps and bounds better than Kandy-Rain. It reminds me of the names 17th century Puritans gave their kids, like Fear-God and Repentance.

hairbrushbedhair · 16/10/2015 13:18

She was 31 a moment ago Confused

Seriously she has to be winding you up though, or you us

Everythingwillbeok · 16/10/2015 13:18

Sorry put 31 in error, she's 30.

ElderlyKoreanLady · 16/10/2015 13:19

I don't think you need to call and apologise. I don't think any of us have named a baby something that everyone around us loved...did she really expect unanimous gushing after the name reveal?

Besides, that's not an unusual name. It's a fucking awful name. This poor child doesn't live in the Hunger Games world. This name will have to go on their CV! It's better that she gets these reactions now so she gets a chance to rethink. The name is trashy.

MrsCaecilius · 16/10/2015 13:19

Is that the name of a reject My Little Pony??

CainInThePunting · 16/10/2015 13:19

I think you reacted in a very restrained manner. That is a fucking awful name to lumber a child with.

Agree that you should just call and apologise though.

And just be especially kind to the child as she grows up... she is going to have a tough life. Sad

MythicalKings · 16/10/2015 13:20

Awful. Poor child.

EponasWildDaughter · 16/10/2015 13:21

She's 31 !?

I thought (and honestly, i'm sorry if i now offend any young people reading this) you were going to say she's a teenage mum or something.

Everythingwillbeok · 16/10/2015 13:21

She's 30, coz there's ten years between us, sorry got mixed up as she's nearly 31.

My niece is called Maisie, and Flora to me is one of those old fashioned names that sadly isn't used very much anymore.

Kandy-Rain is just terrible! (I thought of the porn star/stripper thing, apparently the members of Kandy-Rain did indeed meet on the set of an adult movie.) That poor child. Her only hope is she decides she wants to change it when she starts going to school and then follows through when she's old enough.

ValancyJane · 16/10/2015 13:22

I'm torn, initially I thought YABU and were rude... Having read the name, I think your response was pretty darn tame if I'm honest, I think I would have said much worse!! That said, it's her choice and in your shoes I would apologise for offending her, and say you should have kept your opinions to yourself.

My aunt's step-daughter called her daughter Tia-Maria; I can't remember what my Mum said when she was told, but I think she had a similar response!

EponasWildDaughter · 16/10/2015 13:23

Nearly 31 is still not like nearly 17 or similar is it Grin

pigsDOfly · 16/10/2015 13:23

Yeah, another one here who thought you were going to say she's very young.
