To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad, especially when pregnant.

It's just a silly name, sorry but it is.

I think given the name you were very restrained. I would be inclined not to mention it again.

But as names go, it is very, very bad...........

ProjectGainsborough · 16/10/2015 12:43

Loving how this thread exploded upon the revelation of the name. Grin

You can't even abbreviate it something non-offensive.

Although DH used to work with a (first name) Candy (last name) Crack...

I was going to tell you YABU till I saw the name.

As it stands, I think saying "Mmm I'm not mad about it" deserves a medal for restraint.

I'd have choked on my tea.

squoosh · 16/10/2015 12:45

Candy Crack!

Grin Grin

I'm sure that name never caused a single snigger or raised eyebrow!

SaucyJack · 16/10/2015 12:45

Kandy-Rain is a lovely name!

....... For a range of budget lip gloss.

NinaSimoneful · 16/10/2015 12:46

Go on OP, tell us the name. Or I'll guess and you can tell me if I've got it.

Vada
Leedasha
Montana
Daley
Flora/Florine
Rhonda
Maisie
Sandra

YY to PP saying to keep scthum about your DCs name until they're here. I didn't want to tell anyone DDs name but DH changed his mind and he told his mum. She rolled her eyes and said, and I quote, 'oh good God!'

And then a few times I was alone with her after that she'd look wistfully off into the distance and tell me how lovely she thought the name of her next-youngest GC was. Didn't bother me as I love our DDs name (and don't love DNs name) but it did slightly -very slightly- annoy me in principle.

Sorry for the saga, I'll wrap it up now by saying that MiL has not seen 2 1/2 year old 'oh good God' in just shy of 2 years. Smile

MissMarpleCat · 16/10/2015 12:46

Omg Shock that's really bad. Yanbu

isambardo · 16/10/2015 12:46

Just phone her up and apologise, say you didn't realise she's giving birth to a 'my little pony' and the name is lovely and perfectly suitable

Everythingwillbeok · 16/10/2015 12:46

I'm laughing at your responses but I still feel bad, she said something like "I really love it, it's so girly and different"
Maybe for a tiny baby or a toddler but a grown woman?

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 16/10/2015 12:47

Shitarooney. That's seriously bad.

I'd be saying something like I feel bad you're upset. Names are so personal aren't they.

She's going to encounter a fair few negative reactions with that though, yours won't be the only one.

Caprinihahahaha · 16/10/2015 12:49

My DS would think it was candy cane.

Everythingwillbeok · 16/10/2015 12:49

Yes!!! That's it....it reminds me of a My Little Pony name. Totally. Oh dear, think she's sticking with it too.

YoniMitchell · 16/10/2015 12:50

Could they be taking the piss out of you and just messing around?

NinaSimoneful · 16/10/2015 12:50

Kandy Rain!
MiLs eyes would've rolled right out of her head!

IceBeing · 16/10/2015 12:51

okay so how about fixing this by saying...."as your not on the internet much you might not have realised there are several very famous games that sound very very similar to that. I think your child will really struggle with a name that sounds exactly like a facebook game....and it is SUCH a shame the gamers got there first because it would be a DELIGHTFUL name if it wasn't for that!

pigsDOfly · 16/10/2015 12:51

Too bloody right it's 'different' Everything.

What the hell is she thinking?

Hopefully your words might make her think a bit about what she's about to inflict on her poor innocent baby.

MissMarpleCat · 16/10/2015 12:52

Grin nina mine too

squoosh · 16/10/2015 12:52

What does your nieces's mother think of the name?

Itshouldntmatter · 16/10/2015 12:53

Too easy to turn it into Randy Kane - as a teenage form of torture. Can't you mention that to the mum or something?

IceBeing · 16/10/2015 12:54

And here is the game Candy Rain m.softgames.de/games/candy-rain

Also Kandy Rain was a 2009 X-factor group...

ilovesooty · 16/10/2015 12:55

What's wrong with Flora or Sandra?

Chippednailvarnish · 16/10/2015 12:56

So this band will be associated with her...

Forever
