Who is BU? Me or DH (Childs birthday related)

DS will be 4 in November

There are lots of things he would like for a present (thanks adverts Hmm )

However, I've narrowed it down to:

  1. A bike (big present)
  2. Paw Patrol Look Out (fecking over priced for a bit of plastic but he loves Paw Patrol) and
  3. A Hot Wheels Robot thingy he keeps seeing on the TV and loves and which would add on to his existing Hot Wheels Track

I mentioned this to DH and he felt it was OTT and DS should just get 1 single present.

I think that's mean. Left to me he would get the 3 things above and then some little presents too (couple of books, new colouring things or some craft stuff etc).

I can wind in the extras (though I think they are fun) but I don't think 3 presents is excessive and I think for a 4th birthday, one single present seems a little bit lame.

I appreciate DH doesn't want to spoil him and I'm not keen on those huge piles of presents you see on boasty Facebook posts, but I think 3 presents is fine.

DH is really adamant that 1 present is enough. I think he's being mean. :(

We can afford the 3 presents listed above so it's not finance worries on his part, just a desire not to "spoil" him.

Who is being U (or mean)?

X-post!

Axekick · 15/10/2015 19:02

So are you planning these three presents plus the little extras. In that case Yabu.

If it was just those three and nothing else, I could go for that. Those three plus extras, I wouldn't.

It would be one of those and extra 'bits'

catgirl1976 · 15/10/2015 19:02

Grin That's true Arf

That way madness lies

I'll just pretend I changed my mind of my own accord, but that he is still wrong in some way :)

Oh no I'm too late , I agree with your first suggestion of all 3 . If you can afford it of course.

But now you've made your decision you cannot be swayed by my OTT input Hmm

momtothree · 15/10/2015 19:05

DD is getting a pair of jeans she really wants £40 river island. Thats it.
You are paying for a bike two gifts and a party, plus gifts from family? Too much for a four year old.
DD friends had £600 iphone, £500 horse stuff and a few bits at 12 and she was moaning at the lack of gifts!! It soon comes round.

Katedotness1963 · 15/10/2015 19:05

One present? One?? Seems a bit tight to me. Our kids don't get anything from extended family, we buy them everything, so maybe I'm being unreasonable. I'm on the OP's side.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 15/10/2015 19:09

She has 3 grand mothers, 3 aunts, 2 of my close friends, plus school friends. Shes having a hard time choosing and wants to make the right one.

TheOriginalWinkly · 15/10/2015 19:09

The idea of piles of presents, which will get more expensive with every passing year, reminds me of Dudley Dursley's birthday at the very beginning of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone Grin (note I'm NOT saying there is any similarity between the OP's family and the odious Dursleys)

I only ever got one birthday present from my parents

catgirl1976 · 15/10/2015 19:09

Argh - don't make me waver :) Not after my resounding YABU and gracious defeat

OP posts:
Squiff85 · 15/10/2015 19:10

I'd save the bike for Christmas probably and then do the other 2, with some bits and bobs. To be fair though, if you can afford the bike also then why not? We're big on presents, always give lots of things to open :)

Floggingmolly · 15/10/2015 19:10

What's he getting for Christmas?

catgirl1976 · 15/10/2015 19:12

We do have his cousin to stay and lock him in the cupboard under the stairs Winkly ;)

InternalMonologue · 15/10/2015 19:13

Arf speaks wise words.

I know you've decided on your new tact, but fwiw I think it's the best plan. After all, Christmas will only be a month away and there'll still be stuff to get him for that!

We tend to go for the "couple of things for birthday and more stuff for Christmas" route, and I plan on milking it for all it's worth while he's still satisfied with cheaper things and doesn't want games consoles/tablets/hoverboards/whatever is cool in 2030.

catgirl1976 · 15/10/2015 19:13

Well, he's now getting the Paw Patol Look out and the Hot Wheels Robot FloggingMolly

Otherwise it would have been more Paw Patrol stuff (there's a Snow Mobile and some other bits he'd like)

TheOriginalWinkly · 15/10/2015 19:14

So long as you let the cousin out of the to make the birthday breakfast you're doing fine Grin

InternalMonologue · 15/10/2015 19:14

Meant to add - If he's definitely getting those three things between birthday and Christmas this year, I'd consider giving him the other two things for the birthday, and giving him the bike for Christmas. Bikes seem quite a Christmassy thing.

TheOriginalWinkly · 15/10/2015 19:14

*out of the cupboard

PosterEh · 15/10/2015 19:14

I agree with the pp that I'd get the bike and one of the other two so that he has a "toy" present to play with straight away.

I don't think Christmas being close should make a difference - otherwise summer born kids would always get more presents.

catgirl1976 · 15/10/2015 19:16

Mmm I'm wavering a bit on the bike for Christmas and the other 2 for his birthday now Internal

I've got memories of trying out bikes etc on Christmas day in my head....... you might be right that a bike is a more "Christmassy" thing

IMO those type of plastic set-ups are useless, annoying to store, used very little, badly made and very expensive for what they are .

goawayalready · 15/10/2015 19:20

i dont bother with bikes for christmas i bought one for dd once she couldnt use it till march! (loads of snow and ice that year) check the weather forecast first?

Yika · 15/10/2015 19:21

I think one present is mean.

I like to unveil a pile of stuff for my DD on birthday morning. I like the feeling of specialness, abundance etc. Also, since there's only the one recipient, unlike Christmas, you need a few more things to create the right ambiance. Small items and perishables are fine too. We certainly don't open all the presents at once but a few bigger things and a few smaller things are nice. I think your suggestion of stuff is just about right and not OTT at all. Especially from parents.

CleverPlansAndSecretTricks · 15/10/2015 19:22

Does he want a bike?

reni2 · 15/10/2015 19:22

We usually do quite a few presents, but one of them is the main one (bike here). I would add some books and little things, like a cheap ball or little car.

JassyRadlett · 15/10/2015 19:24

Much more likely to be bloody freezing at Christmas!
