To wonder why so many Scottish people a thrilled when England do badly at sport?

I'm not bothered about the rugby at all personally, but this is irritating me. I have several Scottish friends, and their Facebook newsfeeds are full of gloating about England being knocked out of the world cup. It's a recurring theme with all sporting contests - mant Scottish people will support some random team from a country they've never heard of, if they're playing against England. I don't see the same with Wales and Ireland. Why is this? Is there that much resentment?

Ha! My husband is actually half Scottish himself and he still doesn't support Scotland! We have lots of fun with it though. When England played Italy in the first match of the World Cup last year I very much enjoyed making spag bol for dinner...

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 04/10/2015 14:52

Try having Welsh friends living in Australia.

goblinhat · 04/10/2015 14:54

Many Scottish people dislike the English.

In fact many people abroad dislike the English too although they are too thick skinned to notice.

Usually found by the bar boasting about their assets.

derxa · 04/10/2015 14:56

.unless its Andy Murray, but he's British The bile poured over his head is unbelievable. It's as if it's his fault that Tim Henman didn't do as well.
In reality Henman and Murray are good friends
Fwiw I always support England at cricket and the coverage is always so good and non smug. Bob Willis is hilarious- even when England wins well as in the Ashes he picks them apart.
I don't get so het up about this issue now. I often feel that the football and rugby players don't give much of a shit anyway given that they are overpaid prima donnas.

I think it is partly because the crowing from the media whenever England do well is so tedious (and arrogant). Even during Wales/Scotland/Ireland matches the commentators spend a good proportion of the time talking about England (their last match, their upcoming match, their team selection /injuries, how wonderful they are and how they are sure to go on to win etc). They also spend much of the build up to the patch and post-match discussion talking about England rather than the teams that are actually playing.

The arrogance really gets peoples backs up, I think. We know most of the media/commentators really couldn't give a monkey's about anyone other than England, but at least during the match they could pretend to be interested.

And yes, most of the Scots know the English teams are better than the Scottish ones. But they are our rivals and as they are more likely to beat us, it's not surprising that many don't root for them to win. I think it's much the same with the rivalry between France and England or England and Germany.

bettyberry · 04/10/2015 14:56

I'm mostly getting football loving friends moan how much rugby isn't a real sport and only good actors real men play football! Hmm

Its all a bit tiresome! Esp as these are the same people who moaned like hell when FB and twitter was full of support for the ladies football.

My OH though, he supports Ireland so I'm getting the odd post from him about it but not to the extent of the footy fans bitching rugby isn't a real sport!

because England are insufferably arrogant when they win, and terrible sulkers when they lose

^^ this! Oh boy, seeing the England supports when they lose at football... its only a game lads! get a grip Wink

one thing that confused me last night watching England V Aus, I noticed Prince Harry in the crowd, was anyone royal watching Wales and Scotland or Ireland?

catfordbetty · 04/10/2015 15:02

The simple answer to your question, OP, is that the Scotch hate us. Perhaps they have good reason, I don't know. However, the quicker they get independence the happier we all shall be.

myotherusernameisbetter · 04/10/2015 15:03

Prince Harry is English - I he wants to support England I don't have a problem with that tbh.

If, and its a big if Scotland win anything we are usually a, too busy partying to care or b, so fucking amazed that we have no time to be arrogant about it.

We have no expectation of success.......ever :)

ssd · 04/10/2015 15:03

nice, balanced answer there, catfordbetty

GinandJag · 04/10/2015 15:03

The Princess Royal is the president of the SRU so often at their matches, complete with singing Flower of Scotland.

AdjustableWench · 04/10/2015 15:03

Glad I only have dd as I don't think I could watch a ds play rugby.

I know quite a few girls who play rugby.

As for the Scotland / England thing, I agree that English commentators can be extremely annoying to Scottish fans.

goblinhat · 04/10/2015 15:04

It goes a lot deeper than sport.

Many pillar boxes in Scotland. were defaced when the current queen was crowned Elizabeth the II.

Technically she is Elizabeth I.

myotherusernameisbetter · 04/10/2015 15:04

The simple answer to your question, OP, is that the Scotch hate us

It must be hard being hated by an alcoholic beverage... Hmm

derxa · 04/10/2015 15:05

Princess Anne supports Scotland and attends their matches, gawd bless 'er.
In the Six Nations she stomps out in her 30 year old tweed suits and sensible boots and does the handshaking thing. She also supports Scottish farming by attending events. I have a grudging respect for her.

ssd · 04/10/2015 15:05

Grin at the Scotch

TidyDancer · 04/10/2015 15:06

Nick Knowles (think it was him) said something on Twitter yesterday about thinking it sad that Welsh fans are so fixated on beating England whereas England in return don't really have the same obsession and that beating Wales was way down on the list.

I think that's why I think it's so tragic (and yeah, a bit pathetic) that so many teams are so obsessed with beating England and the anyone but England mantra when it comes to England playing other teams. There are specific international rivalries all over the shop but I've never quite seen the level of hostility anywhere else that gets directed at England.

And I'm part Welsh and German, having lived for a time in Scotland too. I speak from experience.

goblinhat · 04/10/2015 15:07

Scotch

Ha ha - laughing at the fatal error.

ivykaty44 · 04/10/2015 15:08

Gosh I'm obviously to thick skinned to notice people don't like me based on my nationality, probably best that way thenWink

Cookingongas · 04/10/2015 15:09

Yes, royals do support wales in the wales England game William was seen publicly gloating to Harry, as each prince supported/ wore the colours of one nation. There was a very convincing photo of Williams glee.

Oh- I agree with others pp- the welsh definitely join in with the England bashing re sport. But the goady way the English team and media approach the game ( the O2 advert eg) is enough to be fair reason IMO

scarlets · 04/10/2015 15:09

I'm Welsh. I supported Australia against England last night simply because a win for Oz meant Wales qualified for the Quarter Finals automatically, without having to beat Australia next weekend. The pressure is now off, for a while.

There was no other reason for my delight at the score. If anything, I think that the host team's departure is unfortunate for the tournament. However, my main aim was for Wales to get out of the pool, and they did, hence my celebrations last night.

catfordbetty · 04/10/2015 15:11

The word Scotch can be used to describe people too. Look it up.

goblinhat · 04/10/2015 15:11

yup ivy- you will be happier that way.

Americans abroad are generally disliked too- for their brash ways and loudspoken opinions.

Many countries have a similar dislike of the English.

derxa · 04/10/2015 15:13

that the Scotch hate us. My dear departed DM used to say that she spoke Scotch which meant Lowlands Scots dialect. I can't think why because she had a very Anglicised teacher's accent Grin

goblinhat · 04/10/2015 15:14

Last time I checked Scotch was an alcoholic drink.
