to think I'll never have swooshy hair

How do these girls do it? I was following a girl the other day (in the street, not stalking!!) and her beautiful hair, full at the crown, in a pony tail, went SWOOSH to the left, SWOOSH to the right. It was a sight to behold.

My own hair has a mind of its own. If I try to use volumising mousse and put it in a pony tail then I look like Princess Anne. My hair is full at the sides and limp at the back. I've tried different blow drying techniques, I've tried rollers, but no. I will never have swooshy hair.

I worked with a lady who had beautiful swooshy hair. I asked her how she did it and she said "Oh, this old mop? I just washed it and let it dry naturally." NO YOU DIDN'T, YOU BITCH.

How? How do you do it? Come on wags, teenagers and lovely haired people. Tell me your secrets Angry

I've tried the t-shirt thing but my hair was still wet in the morning. Then it frizzes as it dries Confused

The main secret of perfect my wife hair is the best hair dryer which I ordered www.qbicwashrooms.co.uk/. My wife every day in a good mood and her hair -perfect!

My hair is swishy (and going in grey in places but I dye it so I seem to be getting away with it!) and I dont use any products or heat on it at all. I also dont wash it more than twice a week and try to go 5 days between washes if possible.

I have had comments about what good condition it is in and I am sure that that contributes. My sister blow dries every day and uses lots of products and complains that her hair isnt swishy and I am sure it is down to heat and weighing it down with mousse, spray etc.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 02/10/2015 09:48

don't put conditioner on the roots, just the ends and lengths.

neepsandtatties · 02/10/2015 10:14

I need perfect my wife hair!

MyNameIsRonnieFuckingPickering · 02/10/2015 10:18

If you have very fine and silky hair give conditioner the heave-ho.,

HubbaBubbaMumma · 02/10/2015 10:21

Hairdressers always rave about my swooshy, shiny, healthy hair (I'm mid 40s). They reckon that because I don't do much to it is why its so good (and I suppose good diet probably helps as I'm well nourished!) They say they see lots of people's hair which is dry, brittle etc from daily blow-drying, straightening washing etc. (How does anyone have the time for all that anyway???!) . I wash mine about 2 - 3 times week. Colour it at home with a 'natural' type dye that has no peroxide and blow dry it on the rare occasion DH and I actually go out! Shame the hair doesn't cover my face as its the best bit of me!

PuckyMup · 02/10/2015 17:01

I want swishy hair :( But I have oily roots, dry ends and hair that used to be thick but is thinning alarmingly as I age :(

Am working my way through the tips. I only apply conditioner to the ends but it doesn't seem to help and I have no idea how to get away without washing it every day

NeverNic · 02/10/2015 17:07

Bouncy hair is in part the way you walk. My hair swings side to side in part because I am a bouncy walker. Grin I find the less I do though the better. I wash, wrap in a bun and once dry, let it down. My hair is naturally wavy which helps. I also like treseme's weightless shampoo. I find dying hair does thicken it up though. I like the anti aging one by Clairol. It makes my hair glossy and rich girl looking.

hedgehogsdontbite · 02/10/2015 17:16

I have hair so swooshy that strangers stop me in the street to ask what I do to it. They really do. I do nothing. Bog standard supermarket family shampoo/conditioner and leave to dry. That's it. I'm just lucky I guess.

CalliopeTorres · 02/10/2015 17:29

My hair depresses me hugely, it's very thick but coarse in texture - think wire wool - and prematurely white/grey so needs a dye job every 6 weeks. I'd actually kill for swooshy hair.

CarlaJones · 02/10/2015 17:31

Late to the thread, but Grin at Princess Anne and "Oh this old mop!"

Pseudo341 · 02/10/2015 17:38

My hair is much much swooshier since I started dying it. I wish I'd realized that when I was younger. Naturally it's greasy and lank and horrible, hated it all through my teens and twenties. Started going grey in my thirties so stuck permanent dye on it for the first time and suddenly it swooshes! Hairdressers used to tell me what good condition my hair was in for years, but it looked awful, it's in terrible condition now but looks so much better. As far as I'm concerned if my kids inherit my awful hair they're allowed to dye it as young as they want.

SophiaofSpain · 02/10/2015 18:45

Ok, from someone who used to have swishy fab hair untill it all fell out due to stress, it is slowly starting to regain a little bit of thickness and shine.
Take a hair skin and nail vitamin with biotin, and combine with Silica tablets from Holland and Barretts. Your nails grow amazing , hair improves as it grows. Works for me. I also use Aussie intensive conditioner once a month and change my shampoo and conditioner all the time and Never blowdry. Works for me.

Poppiesway · 02/10/2015 18:55

Hellskitty I wish mn had a like button for posts such as yours. My teenage ds has lovely thick black curly hair.. Which he grows semi longish.. Just off his collar... I'm so jealous. Mines dead straight mousey brown: I want my sons hair!!

PinotPony · 02/10/2015 19:11

I've got thick swooshy hair. It's over rated! It takes forever to dry (so I usually don't bother) and any attempt to curl it for parties fails when the curls drop out after 5 minutes.

That said, it does shine quite nicely when straightened. I use Redken Heat Protector stuff with avocado oil.

BlueJug · 02/10/2015 19:18

I am the wrong side of 50 and always used to have lovely, swooshy, thick long blonde hair. It is still good; fairly thick and blonde. My DD has the same hair and it is glorious. She wears it swooshing and tumbling down her back! Neither of us owns a hairdryer - and never have. Shower, brush and leave.

But I have legs like tree trunks, and upper arms like a wrestler so yearned to wear short skirts, strappy tops, sleeveless shift dresses. No-one has it all. I appreciate what I do have more and have learnt to live with the rest. (I would still dearly love to wear a shoestring strap evening dress - try buying long-sleeved party dresses!!)

Truckingalong · 02/10/2015 19:20

Nothing of any value to add but I too want hair like Liz Hurley. And her body too, if we're going for wishes.

Bodicea · 02/10/2015 19:21

I have swooshy, strong and shiny hair. It is nice but it does come with its own set of problems. Gets greasy quickly, wont hold a curl and won't behave when I try any of these fashionable half up/ half down / slightly back combed/ side clipped/ boho type styles. Clips just fall out or go wonky after half an hour.
I basically have to wear is down and straight/slightly bouncy or in a pony tail for it to look good.

whitelisbon · 02/10/2015 19:23

I have swooshy hair. It gets washed every 3/4 days (cheap supermarket shampoo and conditioner), and left to dry, when I'll drag a brush through it.

It looks lovely, but I'm forever sitting on it, the kids lean on it, dh lies on it in the middle of the night, and, I managed to shut it in the car window the other day, meaning I had to drive round a roundabout with my head at a funny angle, as I didn't have enough hands to steer, indicate, change gear, and open the window.
It detracts from the tree trunk legs, large arse, and rapidly expanding bump though, so I'm keeping it.

SinglePringle · 02/10/2015 19:29

You CAN have hair like Liz Hurley. Look!

I am a swooooosh. Even though I am OLD.
Here are the words of wisdom. Please bear with my non-stealthy boasting. this is literally my ONLY good feature and I make the most of it

  1. Choose swooshy parents. Mum still has lovely hair at 75.
  2. find lovely hairdresser. The sort you can plonk down in the chair and say 'just do what you need to do' and half an hour later, your hair looks amazing (wish that could happen for not-at-all-lovely FACE as well :( )
  3. Baby shampoo
  4. Moroccan oil conditioner...just a little bit, it is expensive
  5. Blow dry, but I try not to use straighteners and tongs every day
  6. This is the big secret...HAIR DYE, box version at home, Nice and Easy or similar every three weeks. Before...condition OK ish. After...swoosh-tastic!
Sniv · 02/10/2015 20:29

Grow it really long.

My hair's in awful condition and would like to fluff up into a huge cloud, but due to sheer physics if it's tied back, it has no choice but to hang in a reasonably orderly ponytail and flop about when I walk.
