to think I'll never have swooshy hair

How do these girls do it? I was following a girl the other day (in the street, not stalking!!) and her beautiful hair, full at the crown, in a pony tail, went SWOOSH to the left, SWOOSH to the right. It was a sight to behold.

My own hair has a mind of its own. If I try to use volumising mousse and put it in a pony tail then I look like Princess Anne. My hair is full at the sides and limp at the back. I've tried different blow drying techniques, I've tried rollers, but no. I will never have swooshy hair.

I worked with a lady who had beautiful swooshy hair. I asked her how she did it and she said "Oh, this old mop? I just washed it and let it dry naturally." NO YOU DIDN'T, YOU BITCH.

How? How do you do it? Come on wags, teenagers and lovely haired people. Tell me your secrets Angry

I have naturally swooshy hair. My hairdresser lets me have dry cuts (which she won't do for almost anyone else) because by hair is so well-behaved. I have a big bum, though. For balance.

My hair is swooshy when it's had hi lites, otherwise it's too healthy and lies flat to my head. So I'd suggest drying it with hi lites or bleach to give it more bounce.

Years ago I shared a flat with a girl who wrapped her hair in a (I think) silk scarf every night, she'd wrap her hair round her head in one direction, towards the side she has her parting on, and wrap the scarf tight round it and sleep on it. In the morning it was very bouncy and swooshy due to being pressed the other way. Her hair was chin length. Always meant to try this but never did.

My friend used to pull her shortish hair up in a band at night, the area around the crown, then it had bounce and didn't split with her natural parting/crown. Also she would lie on the floor to blow dry her hair - it's much easier to give hair vertical bounce if you're lying down - you aren't fighting gravity.

My lack of swooshiness is a constant first world problem.

My hints for improving one's swooshiness are:

  1. Wash hair every other day.
  2. Use a silicione free shampoo (baby shampoo)
  3. Don't condition.
  4. Hope the weather is dry.

Or just wear a hat and hope for the best.

I have swooshy hair.

I wash it twice with a 2 in 1 from the poundshop. Blow dry it and straighten it. It is annoying when it sticks on your lipstick, blinds you in wind and annoys whatever dp your snuggling up to. My hair gets everywhere.

It's always been very thick and it is quite curly if left to dry naturally. Stop the hairdressers from thinning it out for a while and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you everyone! Yes -Kerastase! I've used that before and it works a treat. Has anyone tried the Bumble + Bumble shampoo? They stock it in Boots, as I found out today (but didn't buy any).

Hair still looks a fright. I'd put my sunglasses on top of my head and small children were running away from me - I looked in the mirror and I look very very scary. Not swooshy at all Sad Envy

Mine's swooshy too - I use baby shampoo and any conditioner (Herbal Essences naked at the moment). I comb the conditioner through in the shower and leave it a couple of minutes before rinsing. I just leave it to dry naturally, or give it a quick blast with the hairdryer.

Mine looks much swishier in a high ponytail than loose though (probably because I can't be bothered to blow dry it - it does look nice if I do). It helps that it's very thick.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/10/2015 15:58

Actually, that isn't quite true - each hair is quite fine, but I have a lot of them.

TheSnowFairy · 01/10/2015 16:05

I have swooshy hair.

When DD draws pictures of me, I have hair like a Christmas tree or alternatively like a Japanese temple.

SecretWineBox · 01/10/2015 16:10

No heat.

Put down the straightners, hair driers etc.

Wash hair (baby shampoo)
Condition - aussie

go to bed - it will dry over night

Brush it when you can be bothered - use serum

Again - NO HEAT

SecretWineBox · 01/10/2015 16:11

Oh - and a silk pillow case improves shine.

IsadoraQuagmire · 01/10/2015 16:19

Mine's swooshy too. I just wash every 3 or 4 days, condition, and leave it to dry naturally.
It's really shiny as well, maybe because I don't dye it (it's light blonde which I like) or ever use heat on it.

YouHadMeAtMeatTornado · 01/10/2015 16:21

Has anyone mentioned hair plopping yet?

I have fine thin hair but since starting hair plopping it is most voluminous. It's not long enough really to swish but it now has presence. Think Krystle Carrington.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/10/2015 16:24

WHAT on earth is hair plopping?

MyNameIsRonnieFuckingPickering · 01/10/2015 16:25

Plopping only works on curly hair though doesn't it?

YouHadMeAtMeatTornado · 01/10/2015 16:27

My hair isn't curly, but does have a natural wave.

Now I plop and then brush out the waves when they are dry and my hair is all HELLO HERE I AM, I AM HAIR rather than just some pitiful strands growing out of my head.

AsTimeGoesBy · 01/10/2015 16:29

I have swooshy hair. Wash it at night (twice a week, the other nights just wet and condition), run a tangle teaser through it in the shower. Microfibre turban for 10 mins, then go to bed with it wet. In the morning go through it with fingers or wide tooth comb. No products, no heat styling and virtually no greys aged 48. I do have wrinkles and a double chin though.

I lost about a third of it to alopecia once, so I'm very, very grateful for the way it is now.

SecretWineBox · 01/10/2015 16:31

This discussion of 'hair plopping' is disturbing without a proper exaplanation...

AsTimeGoesBy · 01/10/2015 16:33

It's just using an old teeshirt as a turban for wet hair, it's great for curly hair.

diddl · 01/10/2015 16:33

I hope someone explains soon as I'm not googling "hair plopping".

No, no way!

diddl · 01/10/2015 16:36

And the effect/point of that is?

MyNameIsRonnieFuckingPickering · 01/10/2015 16:41

Better curls I'd have thought.

AsTimeGoesBy · 01/10/2015 16:42

Partly to start the drying process and stop your clothes getting wet, and partly because it stops curls going frizzy and gives them definition.

YouHadMeAtMeatTornado · 01/10/2015 16:44

I'm trying to find the best video.

There was some explanation somewhere that a cotton tshirt doesn't rough up the hair shaft or something, so keeps the curls/waves more intact than a normal towel.
You do end up looking a bit Camila Batmanghelidjh.

With a wide clothed comb I comb through conditioner in the shower.

When out squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel (no rubbing).

Put some mousse/thickener/curl enhancer in, not a lot [Paul Daniels emitocon]

And then plop into a Monchengladbach t-shirt (old, ugly, duh doesn't know)

Then when it's dry I do brush through otherwise I'm just looking like Jennifer Gray from Ferris Beuler. And there we go. Hair with a bit of balls.

MrsKoala · 01/10/2015 16:59

I think it's genetic to having straight fine hair but lots of it (which i fortunately have). My hair is 'swooshy' because it is long, dark (and coloured - this helps it be manageable - even if you just dye it your own natural colour over the top - i find as each strand is coated and shinier), i also only use 0 parabens/silicon products, and only condition the ends. I wash it every 3-4 days (even tho it really could do with it every other day) and use dry shampoo and tie up on 3/4th days. I don't often blow dry it either but dry fringe and parting downwards to smooth the top hairs then tie in a low bun at the nape of my neck, so it dries wavy and that gives it some movement/body. I think some balayage highlights also increase the swish factor.

greenhill · 01/10/2015 17:07

My hair is like that, it's very wavy, thick and long.

If you wash and condition it before bed (by lying under the bath water and then just wrapping it in a towel, without brushing it, then put another towel on the pillow overnight) in the morning you've got full on 80's thick hair that leaps around like a shampoo advert.

Normally I have to control it in a messy bun or a ponytail.
