To wear leggings to work

We have a uniform and it's just a tunic black or navy trousers. Most people wear leggings and trainers. One woman has been complaining saying it's not professional! AIBU to think if they want professionals they need to pay professional salary not £6.90 an hour!

I'm a home carer. Honestly, try the George trousers! They come out crease free and dry really quickly.
If you've worked as a carer for more than 6 months you are supposed to have level 2. You're company should arrange this for you (I'm sure that's law now?). If not you can google places near you that provide it. It's really handy and fairly simple.

It really doesn't bother you if your underwear is visible?! My manager would definitely be mentioning it to me if mine were!

Wear leggings and be proud Parrot. If you have a Sainsbury's near you, they do really good thick leggings. That should keep the snobs happy Grin

Op, have you tried jogging bottoms? I wear a uniform like yours and always wear M&S ones, they're as comfy as leggings but look like uniform trousers if you can't see the top.

I have these.. I wash and tumble dry after every shift. www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-straight-leg-joggers-with-staynew/p/p22352569

I presume mine isn't Captain as no one has mentioned it but if it is, no, I have more on my mind than if someone might be horrified by the glimmer of underwear beneath my leggings.

I do not want to wear the George trousers as I don't really like trousers or jeans (I have stomach issues so they can be uncomfortable) but thank you.

I have been with the company since June 2014; I have not been on an NVQ and all seem happy with my work!

I know some of my ladies would be horrified if my underwear was showing, so whether it bothers you or not when your out and about, when your at work that's different.

If trousers are uncomfortable than that's fair enough and if your wearing thick leggings then I don't see any issue.

It's now changed from NVQ to QCF level 2. I've tried googling but can't get a definite answer on if it's law yet. Personally I didn't think it helped much with how I actually worked but it meant I could do the level 3 and that lead on to senior jobs a lot easier. They are free to do too :)

parrotsummer · 25/09/2015 21:06

My ladies tend to be grateful someone shows up, is kind and does the job efficiently, compassionately and in a manner that awards them dignity.

I get some people hate them but leggings are a fairly standard 21st century item of clothing. People don't tend to be 'horrified' by someone wearing a normal item of clothing Wink

I haven't got time for an NVQ and am not really interested but thanks for info.

I can't figure out why you posted in AIBU, parrot, when you seem so convinced you are not being unreasonable at all.
But, FWIW, leggings are not "standard" to be worn as bottoms, with nothing over the top. And it is not ok to show your underwear through them, wherever you work, and indeed whether you care personally or not.

parrotsummer · 26/09/2015 21:32

No, I don't think I am being unreasonable. I wondered what others thought :)

It is the new Care Certificate that all staff new to care have to undertake in the first 12 weeks. Good employers start their staff on QCF 2 at or around 6 months once they have completed their probationary period. OP, if your employers are not offering you proper training you need to let CQC know.

OnlyLovers · 29/09/2015 13:06

Leggings sound eminently suitable for a home carer. And if you wear a tunic top, people can't see your underwear/VPL anyway, surely?

Lol at those going on about business dress or a smart pair of black trousers for a home carer.

Freya888 · 30/10/2015 13:28

Leggings are wardrobe essential. To work I am wearing black with a long jumper, and it's so comfortable to wear + very stylish. These keep their shape well & fitted snugly.

AdjustableWench · 30/10/2015 14:37

I sometimes wear a dress to work, with black pyjama trousers. So far no one has commented. Different line of work though.

Damselindestress · 30/10/2015 14:44

I don't see anything wrong with appropriately thick leggings, especially worn under a tunic. The priority for a home carer is to be practically and comfortably dressed rather than to wear business attire. It's inappropriate to show underwear in most jobs though so just make sure the leggings are thick.

clairemum22 · 31/10/2015 07:14

If you are a good carer and caring for my relative, I couldn't care less if you wore leggings. I think you do an amazing job Flowers
