To wear leggings to work

We have a uniform and it's just a tunic black or navy trousers. Most people wear leggings and trainers. One woman has been complaining saying it's not professional! AIBU to think if they want professionals they need to pay professional salary not £6.90 an hour!

Leggings ARE hosiery. You do look ridiculous when you wear them as trousers. You can't see your own bum, but sadly the rest of us can.

NorbertDentressangle · 24/09/2015 21:10

There are so many places that sell cheap black trousers in every size and style that comfort or cost shouldn't be an issue.

They're also longer lasting than leggings with less danger of holes appearing in seams when you least expect it!

MummySparkle · 24/09/2015 21:13

starkswillriseagain where did you get fleece leggings from? They sound awesome!

We are a cleaning company and although we are strict that our cleaners wear our uniform since presentation is part of the job of representing our company, we wouldn't mind if someone wore leggings underneath it as this would still look smart enough with our tunics!

DanglyEarrings · 24/09/2015 21:20

Also who the heck is only paying their cleaning staff 6.90 per hour?

Starkswillriseagain · 24/09/2015 21:24

everything5pounds.com MummySparkle :) They are so so awesome.

MotherOfFlagons · 24/09/2015 21:24

What? I've worn leggings to work under tunics/dresses. It's never been a problem, and I work for a big company with a dress code. How are they underwear? That's just weird.

"Also who the heck is only paying their cleaning staff 6.90 per hour?"

average cleaners salary in UK £6.84 according to this (ranges from £6.14-£9.82)

rainbow luckily I have a nice bum then Biscuit

OwlinaTree · 24/09/2015 22:23

Oh this is my pet hate at work at the mo. They just don't look smart ever really. Leggings and a long top is a casual look, not a professional work look.

Exceptions for the heavily pregnant. Otherwise just no!

Osolea · 24/09/2015 22:33

I'm with you all the way OP, as long as they're thick leggings and not see through, and yor arse is covered. If you've got the figure to carry it off then there's no reason why you shouldn't wear leggings in a job where you need to be able to move without restriction easy laundry.

I completely disagree that wage has nothing to do with it. Wage has EVERYTHING to do with it. If employers (or their clients) expect staff to dress in smart clothes, then they need to pay enough that you don't have to spend at least half a days wage on one pair of trousers.

Despite the apparently common misconception, home carers should not be expected to work for free.

OwlinaTree · 24/09/2015 22:47

Think it's OK in the op's situation, as it's a different role to mine.

katemiddletonsothermum · 24/09/2015 22:51

Please wear thick leggings. I saw a woman today wearing a short tunic and very thin leggings. She looked like she'd got 15 denier tights on. She was a bit ... erm.... not entirely like Kate Moss.

LuluJakey1 · 24/09/2015 22:53

I am a teacher. Our school dress code says no leggngs or footless tights and no short skirts or dresses. We have to wear business dress. If you don't like the dress code, work somewhere else. It is up to the company what its dress code is. If you choose to work their you have to conform or it can be a disciplinary issue.

Thefuckinggrinch · 24/09/2015 22:57

Thin bad quality see thru type leggings look bloody awful on anyone at anytime.

Decent quality leggings worn in leiu of tights I see no issues eg with a long tunic, skater dress, top which covers your arse etc.

Any leggings worn with tight or short tops I feel is not a work/professional look ( and often not a good look in general)

Clothes that you're comfortable bending and stretching in, and washing frequently are probably most important for home carers.

If the business has a clear idea what sort of trousers they want you to wear, then practical, fit for purpose trousers should be provided. If they only provide the tunic, then they need to pay a lot more than minimum wage to dictate exactly what you wear with it.

Fatmomma99 · 25/09/2015 00:12

You got there before me, MummySparkle.

I work in 3 primary schools. In 2 of them jeans are explicitly banned. If you are a teacher, sitting in a chair and your children are sitting on the carpet looking up at you, if you want to wear a skirt then leggings are a GOOD THING if you don't want them to see your pants.

Your school sounds horrible, LuluJakey1

MummySparkle · 25/09/2015 00:54

No dresses lulujakey? That's harsh! I live in dresses at work! Our dress code is pretty relaxed though. (Think it might say no leggings somewhere, but I'm going with 'oops, I'm still kinda new and nobody has pointed it out to me yet' I started in January so I'm still new-ish right?!

I'm in a secondary school, but not a teacher. I'm in the art department doing, pretty much everything that doesn't involve making lesson plans and actually delivering a lesson. I spend a lot of time standing on desks and sticking things to walls. Tights wouldn't cut it. And they fall down, constantly!

MiscellaneousAssortment · 25/09/2015 01:57

Carers are among the poorest paid people in the country. Usually accompanied by bad working practises and to top it off, very little respect.

The entire industry needs revolutionising. But I don't think leggings are the place to start :)

If you're a good carer with sensitivity, compassion and respect for others - then you are amazing Cake

parrotsummer · 25/09/2015 07:01

Business dress? Sorry but PSML! Do you realise what we do? Shock

parrotsummer · 25/09/2015 07:04

Oh and Lulu - it's work there, not their. Wink

Parrot - I think when lulu referred to "business dress" she was just describing the dress code at her school, not at all suggesting that everyone, in every job, should wear business dress.

Thing is, most jobs have a dress code. When I worked in a shop it was company shirt and tailored trousers (on £3.07 an hour!) And yes, we had to provide tailored trousers.

Leggings are not trousers. Therefore if you wear a tunic and leggings for work, and the dress code says trousers, then you're not dressed suitably IMO.

I was reminded of this thread at the bus stop this morning. A woman got on who looked absolutely fine from the front, but when she turned to sit down you could see her whole pants, quite clearly, through her leggings. Yes, she might have known and not cared. But IMO, if she was going to work - anywhere! - then showing her knickers all day probably isn't the best idea?
