To wear leggings to work

We have a uniform and it's just a tunic black or navy trousers. Most people wear leggings and trainers. One woman has been complaining saying it's not professional! AIBU to think if they want professionals they need to pay professional salary not £6.90 an hour!

I consider leggings as thick, comfortable tights that actually stay up and wear them accordingly. Might go an inch or 2 shorter than I would in tights but any skirt would be a professional length. Always think leggings on own look like someone forgot to put a skirt on!

Runningupthathill82 · 24/09/2015 20:22

Leggings are not trousers. They're an alternative to tights. Unless you're three years old, of course.

And no, they shouldn't be worn with a tunic for work, and it would look scruffy and unprofessional.

In my office, leggings are only worn under dresses in place of tights and, even then, rarely. With an ordinary top or tunic they look awful IMO.

Completely unforgiving, usually a bit see through, usually bagging at the knee by midway through the day - why would you?!

parrotsummer · 24/09/2015 20:24

I don't think we are a profession so I'm not concerned about looking professional!

No, it's not an office. I'm a home carer so obviously in people's homes.

Did anyone say the OP worked in an office? I think people were just giving examples from their own workplaces.
I'm presuming the OP doesn't work in an office, as she wears a uniform - I was guessing a beauty therapist or something, going by the mention of a tunic? Could be way off though!

Runningupthathill82 · 24/09/2015 20:30

Oops, x post. Not a beautician then! But yes, as a carer going round to people's homes, I think proper trousers would be much more appropriate than leggings and a thigh-skimming top.

BackforGood · 24/09/2015 20:30

If you do a job that states you wear the uniform, then you have to wear the uniform.
Uniform trousers as always 'tailored' trousers. They can't start stipulating... no jeans, no legging,s etc., as some bright herbert then turns up in jeggings / harem pants and says "it didn't say no jeggings / harem pants". It's obvious to all people surely, that trousers means trouser, and not anything else.

To me, usual, it doesn't matter if you work in a shop, an office, in people's homes or wherever - leggings aren't trousers!

BrandNewAndImproved · 24/09/2015 20:33

I wear leggings as trousers. I think I look nice, I wear two pairs at the same time to make them thicker. M&s leggings are amazing, about a tenner a pair and you don't need 2 pairs to get a thick look.

I feel mumsy in jeans unless high waisted skinny jeans.

parrotsummer · 24/09/2015 20:35

Problem with normal trousers is as you can imagine I have to wash my clothes after every shift (sometimes have 4 a day) and leggings wash a lot better and are comfier. Management haven't complained about leggings or trainers it's just one woman who suddenly has a bee in her bonnet!

OP posts:
SonnyNoChance · 24/09/2015 20:37

I got a very good job after an interview in leggings. They are clothes. Biscuit

Wolfiefan · 24/09/2015 20:38

Leggings really aren't trousers though. I'd wear them instead of tights.
But then I wouldn't wear trainers to work either (unless my job was in fitness)

MummySparkle · 24/09/2015 20:42

I wear leggings under short dresses all the time, I work in a school, but have a role where I'm constantly bending down, picking thins up, washing things up. Tights wouldn't be practical for my job. Nobody has complained yet. I always wear sensible shoes and smart-ish tubic-dresses. I would never wear leggings if my bum was on show when standing, but I do too much climbing on things to wear tights.

As the uniform states trousers and a tunic I would expect the tunic not too be long enough to be worn with leggings. ie I wouldn't wear trousers under a dress/tunic but I would under a shorter tunic iyswim?

Then there is the issue of leggings and leggings. Some a nearly transparent and like tights. Others are much closer to very tight trousers. So it depends which ones you are actually wearing.

And finally, as she isn't management, she can have her opinion, she can express it but she can't impose it on others!

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 24/09/2015 20:44

Leggings are hosiery, they're not trousers.

parrotsummer · 24/09/2015 20:45

Tbh some leggings are quite thin. I don't think it bothers anybody, or if it does they haven't said anything. We work very hard at our jobs and are kind and caring to the people we look after, and that's what counts!

NorbertDentressangle · 24/09/2015 20:48

Whether you're on £6.90ph or £69.00ph it doesn't matter. If the dress code is trousers then that does not include leggings (or jeans for that matter) IMO.

Leggings can look smart when teamed with the right dress/tunic or whatever but when there's a uniform code that stipulate trousers then the company are going for an overall look which does not involve leggings.

The same applies to school uniform for example, or the cleaners where I work -they are on about £6.90ph, are provided with polo shirts but have to wear black/navy trousers but not leggings or black denim jeans.

BrandNewAndImproved · 24/09/2015 20:49

Leggings are not hosiery. If they were they would be next to the tights and knickers.

margeys · 24/09/2015 20:53

If your manager doesn't say anything, then ignore your colleague. And as a home carer you need to wear practical clothes.

parrotsummer · 24/09/2015 20:53

Well if management are fussed they can notify us but they haven't! Also there's a couple of very plus-sized women and they would have to spend a lot of money on food quality black trousers.

I think for a cleaner to have to wear ordinary black trousers is silly to be honest, I wouldn't want to work for a company that cared more about what we looked like than the work we do.

DinosaursRoar · 24/09/2015 20:58

I agree that leggings should be viewed as thick, footless tights, not trousers. If you wouldnt wear the tunic with tights, then leggings aren't suitable. If your management haven't complained, then i'd not rush to change it, but next time you need to replace them, buy cheap trousers that wash easily rather than leggings. supermarkets usually have very cheap ones like this

Starkswillriseagain · 24/09/2015 20:59

Leggings are fine so long as they are thick enough to hide any bits that may show. I got some fleece ones for winter which are so warm.

I'd ignore the woman until management says otherwise, they may think it's fine and it's their opinion that counts not some random's.
