To wear leggings to work

parrotsummer · 24/09/2015 18:35

We have a uniform and it's just a tunic black or navy trousers. Most people wear leggings and trainers. One woman has been complaining saying it's not professional! AIBU to think if they want professionals they need to pay professional salary not £6.90 an hour!

Wear legging jeans ?

LoveChickens · 25/09/2015 08:02

Most carers I see wear leggings. It looks scruffy and unprofessional. It's not the dress code.

Therealyellowwiggle · 25/09/2015 08:11

It's up to the company what dress code they apply as long as it is applied fairly (so insisting on different standards for men and women would be an issue). At my work some of the shortest dresses (imo - they probably don't see them as that short as I'm an old gimmer!) are worn by the head and senior management.

TodmordensDog · 25/09/2015 08:12

Leggings are not interchangeable with trousers! When will people realise this? If you wouldn't wear just tights with the top, don't wear just leggings either. It looks bloody awful.

parrotsummer · 25/09/2015 08:14

Caring isn't a profession so going on about it looking unprofessional misses the point.

Working in a shop doesn't involve blood, sick, poo, smoke and urine.

I don't really like jeans.

I don't really care how I look.

luckily I have a nice bum then

Even if it was true, I still don't want to see it, and you DO look ridiculous.

When has it become acceptable to go out in pyjamas or without a skirt on? I love leggings, but they were never made to replace trousers.

HeadDreamer · 25/09/2015 08:28

parrotsummer wear whatever you want. Have you been cautioned by management about wearing leggings? The answer is no isn't it? That woman is a pig head and have no idea what 'professional' means.

In the modern workplace, it varies enormously. To me, leggings are like tights. I prefer tights, but only the thick cotton ones. In summer, I go bare legged. I work in an office, in front of a computer, and in a 'professional' job. I have a job title that includes the word analyst. And in a previous role, an engineer. Some other companies call us software developers. We all have degrees, and I even have PhD. My husband also works in a 'professional' job in a university research centre. He wears t-shirts and outdoor trousers to work, with hiking boots. People need to realise not everyone work in an office. And even for those who work in an office, in a professional job, dressing 'professionally', doesn't mean leggings, bare legs, jeans, t-shirts, trainers are not allowed.

HeadDreamer · 25/09/2015 08:30

I mean I don't think my colleagues will say anything if I turn up in leggings, even though I don't wear leggings.

I worn birkenstock to work all summer last year when I was pregnant. They obviously think I looked professional enough.

TooOldForGlitter · 25/09/2015 08:30

I work in a professional office and often wear black or pinstripe leggings with a camisole/silk blouse and a blazer/tailored jacket. I look very smart thank you very much.

BrandNewAndImproved · 25/09/2015 08:30

Have you got super powers to see through computer screens? How can you say I look ridiculous when you don't even know what I look like Grin rainbow and all I've told you is that I wear thick leggings or two of them at the same time.

We've already deduced they aren't thin see through ones, and leggings are not tights. If they were there wouldn't be a need for thick footless tights. Or they would be called long John's. How can you say I look ridiculous without ever setting eyes on me.

Fairylea · 25/09/2015 08:42

My gran had carers come in when she was terminally ill with bowel cancer. Quite frankly as long as they were nice and kind and did the job I couldn't have cared less if they turned up in a bikini or mankini. Honestly we are far too worried about appearances as a nation. It's utterly ridiculous.

A tunic and leggings and trainers or whatever is absolutely fine for someone who is a carer.

HeadDreamer · 25/09/2015 08:46

A tunic and leggings and trainers or whatever is absolutely fine for someone who is a carer.

Exactly. In what way does tunic and leggings affect someone's ability to be a carer?

rainpouringrainbows · 25/09/2015 08:55

BrandNewAndImproved

I know what leggings look like, and I know what someone wearing them INSTEAD OF TROUSERS looks like. You just look like you forgot to put your skirt on.
Even if you happen to look like Gisele, I can safely say that you look ridiculous without clothes on at work, or wearing a bikini in the office.

I would love to think you are being deliberately silly, but unfortunately, experience proves that dress codes are needed in a work environment, and that some people believe that rules and common sense don't apply to them.

Totally agree leggings are not trousers. I walked past a woman strapping her dc into a car the other day who was wearing leggings and white pants with hearts on them. I'm quite sure they didn't look see through on the rack but they were on.

I do wear them a lot but under skirts/ dresses with boots, they ladder less and provide a bit better coverage than most tights but not on thier own. I also dislike trainers at work but suspect I'm in the minority.

Cocolepew · 25/09/2015 08:59

Who exactly decided that leggings are underwear?
I didn't get the memo Hmm
If it isn't in your dress code carry on wearing them. Where I work a lot of people, wear leggings for the comfort and they are practical for the type of job we do.

Quiero · 25/09/2015 09:00

Of course leggings aren't hosiery. They're leggings, a casual alternative to trousers. If you don't personally like them or don't suit them then great but you can't reclassify them as something else Confused

I think leggings look fine under a tunic, I would never judge someone as unprofessional for wearing them and as a carer you should be comfortable and practical above everything else.

Fucking hell I wouldn't wear Crocs but I don't judge nurses for wearing them. Would they be more professional if they were wearing court shoes?

I find this whole obsession with looks and dress code really weird. I worked in a call centre where no one would ever see you and you still had to wear business dress. The thinking was that you would act more professional and be more productive if you looked professional.

Google doesn't have a dress code, you can wear what you want. They haven't achieved much have they?

rainpouringrainbows · 25/09/2015 09:08

The problem is that you have one rule for all. If you allow leggings and tunic, most people would be completely fine, but you always have one who would turn up in leggings, a tight cropped vest and heels.

The reason some dress codes are very strict is because you have to plan for the odd unreasonable idiot who think they are being clever. It is much easier to send someone home when they have their bum on show if the dress code does state no leggings, than arguing about the reasonable length of a dress or a tunic.

"leggings are a casual alternative to trousers"? Oh, because they are footless? Give me strength...

Going to jump to BrandNew's defence. There are leggings and leggings. Yes, there are the £3 Primark ones that are little thicker than tights - but she says she sometimes wears two pairs to make them thicker.

I've not done that but I will wear thick leggings with top that is too short for tights. (I have a new favourite River Island pair with a zip at the back - note they are sold as "leggings" and not in the underwear section.)

Anyway, back to OP. YANBU. Leggings have not been explicitly barred from your dress code and the person objecting is not your boss.

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 25/09/2015 09:19

I see leggings as an alternative to tights, like very thick tights. Too thick to put with a suit for work though. I would wear leggings with a tunic or dress that I thought was too short for me (at my age) to wear with tights, if I wore them at all.

I think it is OK if teenagers or the very young wear leggings as trousers (although it looks silly if you can see someone's pants, granted. By which I mean they look silly, not that they should be banned from showing their pants). However if older women (i.e. anyone hoping to pass themselves of as a "grown up") wear them as trousers I think they look silly even if not see-through.

Children can wear leggings as trousers obviously.
