To think tha more than one carb for dinner is unnecessary (and will probably make you fat if done regularly)

Just back from a friends and had a very interesting debate over dinner.

We all had homemade pizza and garlic bread which was bloody lovely but I made a comment about having a "carb on carb" meal to be met with blank stares... I explained further and not one person seemed to think there was anything odd about eating so many carbs at once.

There were 6 of us and I am the only fat one.

Half of the group said they have more than one carb with dinner "quite often" examples were jacket spuds served with Lasagne, some type of bread with pasta dishes and curry with rice and Naan - one friend has very posh bread on the table with every evening meal

We're all in our 30's, mostly have kids and jobs so no time for excessive gym attendance.

AIBU to think they are all talking utter shite?

OP posts:

I suspect that most people who aren't fat have decent metabolisms and self-regulate naturally without thinking about it. Sometimes I have pie and chips with a pint, but then the next day I might just have an omelette for dinner or similar.

tobysmum77 · 20/09/2015 20:04

The point is that carbs arent that filling unless you eat a lot. So yes if I ate more carbs I'd be fatter. I get on much better eating more protein, I feel fuller for fewer calories.

whattheseithakasmean · 20/09/2015 20:04

OP, if you are all 'happy to speak candidly and open to each other', why do you think your friends 'are talking utter shite'? - your 2 posts contradict each other.

Do you think your friends are lying about what they eat, or that what they eat is wrong? In any case, as the only overweight one in the group, perhaps you should not be the one holding forth about healthy eating....

OrderofWork · 20/09/2015 20:04

I think you're probably right but mainly because carbs are often served in huge portions.

Imo snacking is the root cause of the obesity crisis - it drives me mad that hcps are still telling us dc need "healthy snacks"

Imo if we eat three meals made from real food, to a sensible level of saiety and nothing in-between, we can pretty much eat what we like for those meals.

Am Grin at all the people outraged for your friends, it was just a discussion about current thinking on good diet, no need for anyone to be offended

Apathyisthenewblah · 20/09/2015 20:05

Hmm I had a creamy seafood pasta for lunch and it was served with garlic bread which I didn't eat as it was too much. I could have managed it if I'd left some of the pasta but why leave the yummiest thing??
So I think multicarbing it is fine as long as the overall meal size is not too big.
I'm not overweight but I simply couldn't have eaten the whole meal so I didn't.

StealthPolarBear · 20/09/2015 20:06

You say you only do it on special occasions, does a meal with friends not qualify?

Artandco · 20/09/2015 20:07

Irene - I think so. We had a dinner party last night so had a 3 course meal and a fair bit of wine. Today we have all had a light brunch of poached eggs and spinach, and have just eaten a chicken salad. Nothing else as so full from yesterday still.
Over a week we do this naturally.

MissFitt68 · 20/09/2015 20:08

micah as I understand it carbs which aren't burnt off or used by the body are stored as fat whereas protein isn't. Carbs are basically sugar. There's some scientific thinking behind it all but to be honest, low carbing is bloody boring and restrictive

Breadandwine · 20/09/2015 20:08

Alibabs, you must have read a different OP to the one I read - she didn't come across as rude in the slightest.

You, on the other hand…

Must agree with PPs about the chip butty. (But gravy????)

And I always have curried wedges with my pizza.

lastqueenofscotland · 20/09/2015 20:09

Orderofwork I can't stand this constant need to snack. You will not collapse with starvation if you don't eat every hour especially if your life involves driving to work and sitting at a desk!!! Healthy or otherwise it's still calories.

Quiero · 20/09/2015 20:09

I can remember a thread on here where people were saying beans on toast was a weird meal because it was carbs on carbs and most people agreed Confused honest OP, it depends which crowd you get as to how these threads go.

I think for someone overweight and actively trying to lose weight then eating more than one lot of carbs would send the calorie level up, unless as Worra suggested you half the quantities.

If you're not overweight then it's a totally different matter.

WorraLiberty · 20/09/2015 20:10

I still don't understand how it meant the OP's diet 'went out of the window'?

OrderofWork · 20/09/2015 20:12

I'm not fat either ArtandCo (as above, big believer in regular meals, real food and no snacking) but I alway find I'm starving the morning after a particularly large meal.

Mrsjayy · 20/09/2015 20:15

Yabu to worry about carb on carb at your friends home when she made you dinner do folk really get twitchy about carbs like this its all abput portion control imo

tobysmum77 · 20/09/2015 20:15

Beans have protein also though, and personally I count pulses as protein although obviously this isn't strictly 100% true. Of course if you halve the portions of naan and rice it comes to the same, personally I have one or the other, makes for more variety with different meals. I really don't think I 'low carb' particularly but it's watch 'em a bit.

Bellebella · 20/09/2015 20:15

Aside the issue of carb on carb being unhealthy, I think you were very rude to complain about the dinner. You were a guest, was it really the right time to point out your view.

HippyDippyRidingPretty · 20/09/2015 20:16

I'm with you op. Dp eats bread with every dinner. I don't get it. But I'm not a massive fan of the more filling carbs. I don't eat rice, potatoes or pasta, only bread when it's used as a 'main' part of the meal.

Double carbs are too much for me in one meal.

MissFitt68 · 20/09/2015 20:19

worra I don't understand the diet out the window remark either..... Surely if you are going to be eating out with friends you allow for it by eating lightly throughout the day? I know I do!

Trills · 20/09/2015 20:20

There were 6 of us and I am the only fat one.

So why exactly do you think that their eating habits "will probably make you fat"?

Your evidence so far is to the contrary.

80schild · 20/09/2015 20:20

I am so fed up of hearing from kook nutritionists who make money from the carb is bad mantra. The number of people who buy into it is ridiculous. Carbs aren't fattening - fat is fattening. As it is more calorie dense per gram it takes longer for fat to fill you up. Ask anyone with a degree in nutrition about this and I am 95% sure they will agree with me.

Mrsjayy · 20/09/2015 20:20

Garlic bread is usually served along side pizza nobody needs to eat it if they dont want it

ScarletRuby · 20/09/2015 20:21

If this had been my house you were at you wouldn't be invited back.

StellaAlpina · 20/09/2015 20:21

I could never get along with 'low carbing', where I am from it's strange if there isn't bread at the table with every meal - including pasta.

Lurkedforever1 · 20/09/2015 20:24

Yabu. I eat either double carbs or double portions of one carb at 3 meals a day. I'm far from fat. The 'aren't you lucky to be able to eat all that' I find puzzling, because I'm eating stuff because I need it, rather than in a 'it's ok I won't get fat' manner. Which is actually the normal, healthy way to eat, not some bizarre effect of my metabolism.
It does irritate me though when people bigger than me start questioning the weight implications of my food type or quantity.

Judydreamsofhorses · 20/09/2015 20:26

We regularly double carb here. I am not fat, partly because I walk about 50 miles a week and partly because I don't eat massive portions. Pizza without garlic bread is no use to me!
