To think tha more than one carb for dinner is unnecessary (and will probably make you fat if done regularly)

Just back from a friends and had a very interesting debate over dinner.

We all had homemade pizza and garlic bread which was bloody lovely but I made a comment about having a "carb on carb" meal to be met with blank stares... I explained further and not one person seemed to think there was anything odd about eating so many carbs at once.

There were 6 of us and I am the only fat one.

Half of the group said they have more than one carb with dinner "quite often" examples were jacket spuds served with Lasagne, some type of bread with pasta dishes and curry with rice and Naan - one friend has very posh bread on the table with every evening meal

We're all in our 30's, mostly have kids and jobs so no time for excessive gym attendance.

AIBU to think they are all talking utter shite?

It was more of a "god that's my diet out the window today as I've had pizza and bread" as opposed to a lecture or any kind of rude comments. A discussion ensued and I was incredibly surprised at the outcome is all.

No rudeness, no slagging off the food which was delightful and no arguments or drama. Just a discussion between some friends who are happy to speak candidly and open to each other.

I am not massively obese, just a wee bit above healthy BMI (size 14) but ideally want to shift about 14 - 20lbs. I am still carrying some baby weight.

I am the biggest of the group - for my height - and whilst I am no super strict food mentalist I found the attitude to regular multiple carbs odd. I am all for the occasional treat but surely doing it all the time isn't good?

Well on the bright side, at least you won't be invited back for any more carb-on-carb meals. Hmm

HackerFucker22 · 20/09/2015 19:46

I wish it were good by the way.... freaking love carbs.

We got to talking about out most carbtastic meals and one friend confessed to lasagne, chips and garlic bread on a semi regular basis. She is so slim as well.

I think yanbu. Regular garlic bread is a quick way to gain a stone. I doubt they eat like that all the time tbh though and I would offer garlic bread with pizza if we had guests. I usually only have one carb per meal and fill up on protein instead.

SlowlyGoingINSAINIA · 20/09/2015 19:49

DH eats lots of carbs with every meal but has never gone above 55kg and has a very low body fat percentage. Envy

If you eat too much of anything you will gained weight apart from dh

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 20/09/2015 19:49

YANBU.

But a pie always needs mash.

VimFuego101 · 20/09/2015 19:51

YANBU - but you wouldn't be invited back ti consume any more carbs at my house!

slithytove · 20/09/2015 19:51

Yabu

Pizza and dough balls / wedges
Any pasta and garlic bread
Curry rice and naan and Bombay potatoes, hit that trifecta
Fish chips and a butty
Sandwich and crisps
jacket potato and baked beans

Carbs are everywhere and should be celebrated!

Wewereneverbeingboring · 20/09/2015 19:53

This reminds me a bit of the saying "only fat people drink diet coke". Not quite true of course, but you get the jist. I'm overweight, the only time I don't put on more is when I forget about food/diets and just get on with things.

cosytoaster · 20/09/2015 19:55

YANBU - love carbs but only double up for a treat. V envious of those that can eat lots of carbs and stay slim.

WorraLiberty · 20/09/2015 19:55

Regular garlic bread is a quick way to gain a stone.

How?

If you eat 2 slices of pizza and 2 slices of garlic bread, how is that different to eating 4 slices of pizza and no garlic bread? Confused

It really is about quantity imo.

MissFitt68 · 20/09/2015 19:56

Carb portion is key I think. I lost 5 stone by low carbing ( on the biwi threads here on MN)

Then decided to run London marathon which meant eating carbs! I ended up running the marathon and just after it I weighed in a stone heavier than before training

I'd over estimated the need for carbs

lastqueenofscotland · 20/09/2015 19:56

I'd have just told you to eff off if you mentioned carb on carb if is made food!!

I'm very much a believer in calories in calories out. Bmi of 20 odd but eat a tonne - something needs to fuel the 50 miles a week I run. I find chips and macaroni cheese the best pre-marathon meal. How's that for high carb high fat!

Artandco · 20/09/2015 19:57

But it's evens out surely? If you have just pizza you might have three slices. If you have with garlic bread you have two pieces of pizza and a piece of garlic bread. If you go and carry on eating three pieces of pizza plus the garlic bread that's when you gain weight as your now eating more, not because it's two different carbs

HackerFucker22 · 20/09/2015 19:57

I actually love diet coke - prefer the taste.

Conversation was nowhere near as hideous or as ungrateful as my OP makes it sound..... and it occurred after I'd eaten my double carbs and a not so small slither of pecan pie.

OP posts:
MrsMook · 20/09/2015 19:58

I'd say it's more about portion size and staying within what your body requires. If you have a piece of garlic bread substituting a similar calories worth of pasta, then there's minimal impact. If it was an additional portion that made you exceed what you need, then that could contribute to weight gain.

MissFitt68 · 20/09/2015 19:58

Yes carbs are everywhere..... Also in fruit, carrots, parsnips, milk, peas,nuts.....hard to avoid

WorraLiberty · 20/09/2015 19:59

OP did you eat less pizza because you had garlic bread?

If not then it's got nothing to do with double carbing and all to do with 'double eating'.

tobysmum77 · 20/09/2015 20:02

Well quite worra it depends what you're eating. If you have a decent portion of spaghetti Bolognese for example with plenty of meat (back to a previous thread) then you don't need anything else on top. 2 bits of pizza and 2 pieces of garlic bread I'd be starving an hour later.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 20/09/2015 20:02

There aren't many meals where I would choose two carbs. Rice and naan. Roasties and yorkshires. But it's about overall diet and portions.

Micah · 20/09/2015 20:02

What's the difference between "filling up on protein" rather than carbs?

Why exactly would eating 500 calories of protein make you less likely to put on weight than 500 calories of carbs?

and as pp said, why is the Mediterranean diet held up as the best/healthiest, if carbs are so evil?

MorrisZapp · 20/09/2015 20:02

Nobody gives a toss about carbs in real life. It's just food.

RachelZoe · 20/09/2015 20:02

Nobody forced you to eat both. If you thought it was unhealthy why didn't you just have one?

Perhaps they were trying to make the friend who cooked the meal feel less awkward?

Quite
