Infuriated by colleague that has sushi, fruit and soft drink every lunchtime

They are all plastic wrapped, with plastic fork for fruit, plastic bottle for soft drink, plastic container for soy sauce. It's like a mountain of plastic every lunchtime. Really pisses me of.

Now they are bringing in that plastic bag law however plastic bags are so thin nowadays and all the main supermarket s decompose in 2-5 years. But all this plastic packaging will not decompose for a long time.

Yes I know some will say its none of my business, but rubbish, wastefulness and landfill are my business IMO.

Rant over!

You have stuff you care about and other people feel more strongly about other stuff. I personally hate the scaremongering plastic Nazis and it just makes me want to use more.:) How many plastic straws are in the sea from Birmingham? :)

illogicality · 04/01/2020 22:04

Focus on improving yourself, rather than obsessing over others.

Winterwoollies · 04/01/2020 22:05

Jesus, is this life now? You can’t even enjoy your packed lunch without some self-righteous busybody secretly seething about it and judging you?

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/01/2020 22:07

Bananas have zero air miles, they are all by boat
Container ships powered by big Diesel engines. Maritime CO2 emissions exceed aviation emissions.

KatharinaRosalie · 04/01/2020 22:09

ZOMBIE alert, I doubt OP will be back after 5 years

maddening · 04/01/2020 22:16

We should all be shouting at manufacturers and governments to cut the plastic waste, there are slow changes but we need much more joined up thinking - eg consistency in manufacture that enables ease of recycling, scientists to develop better and commercially viable recycle processes that also increases the amount that can be recycled, better and commercially viable ways of filtering biproducts of production so it doesn't pollute the air or water etc,

Manufacturers should try harder and governments should incentivise appropriately

CripsSandwiches · 04/01/2020 22:16

YANBU but we basically need to legislate because people won't try hard enough unless they're forced. People will shrug and say it's legal so I'm entitled to do it.

maddening · 04/01/2020 22:16

Oops sorry zombie!

IdblowJonSnow · 04/01/2020 22:18

Yanbu. It's not like you've said anything to this individual. It's annoying and unnecessary.
And for those saying get a life what about all those poor ocean creatures who are dying with stomachs full of plastic?

Wildorchidz · 04/01/2020 22:20

The ban on single use plastics will begin in April this year, beginning with straws, stirrers and cotton buds. More items will be added in 2021 - including plastic cutlery!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 04/01/2020 22:20

Oh do tell her...I hope she responds as I would!!!

slashlover · 04/01/2020 22:23

@Butchyrestingface what was the point in posting on a 4 1/2 year thread without adding anything worthwhile?

ims0rrydarlin · 04/01/2020 22:25

Mind your business.

alibongo5 · 04/01/2020 22:32

What depressing responses on this thread. No wonder the world is fucked. You are definitely not unreasonable to worry about unsustainable packaging. The world is full of idiots.

Totally agree. The world is dying and people still don't care.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 22:33

@Butchyrestingface what was the point in posting on a 4 1/2 year thread without adding anything worthwhile?

I did. I told her she was NBU. In fact, I had composed a lengthy response before realising it was all for nowt as thread was er, not recent. But it seemed such a shame not to say anything.

I’m not responsible for any later posters who didn’t read till the end of the thread to realise it was a zombie, obv. But lesson learned. Grin

Nothing wrong with fruit sald which he probably prefers to a banana. It's not his fault a plastic fork is packaged with it, that's how it goes. You really should be less nosey about what other people eat.

When I saw the thread title I thought you'd be moaning about the smell of the sushi or bad table manners.

I’ve got engaged, married, bought a house and had 2 children since this thread was started. Wonder if she’s still working in the same office stressing over plastic? Hope she comes back to update us on where life is at with her.

Geneshish · 04/01/2020 23:25

Sounds like she's having a Tesco meal deal. It's what I do when I haven't been organised enough to make anything at home. Yes I hate the waste but its convenient when you have a busy life. Your frustration shouldn't be with your colleague but with the supermarket chain that are offering no convenient take out lunch option that doesn't involve a tonne of waste.

lcarmichael · 04/01/2020 23:28

I'm with you Sazzas. There is a difference between reducing your impact by actually TRYING to minimise and reduce your consumption of non-renewable materials, and mindlessly throwing away excessive plastic then having the arrogance to be critical of those who are striving for positive change.
It's the same with bad drivers, they are perfect in their mind so are allowed to break the speed limit tailgate and be impatient but point it out to them that they are wrong or dangerous.... and they freak out!
It's hard to be perefect in a modern urban life but that's no excuse to give up and think it's our right to be brainless impulsive morons doing what we want because 'everyone else does it'.
Amen.

I wonder the coworker had for lunch today...

Tinkerbell456 · 04/01/2020 23:31

You’re not being unreasonable about the plastic, but maybe a bit about being irritated at him for it. Plastic is a problem for certain, and some packaging is ridiculous. Why plastic wrap fruit for example? Buy, wash, eat I reckon, but maybe that’s not an option in his case.

lcarmichael · 04/01/2020 23:31

Good for you, sounds a little rushed to me btw, but your 2 children will most likely see the demise of themselves and your perfect modern world in their lifetime.
