Infuriated by colleague that has sushi, fruit and soft drink every lunchtime

They are all plastic wrapped, with plastic fork for fruit, plastic bottle for soft drink, plastic container for soy sauce. It's like a mountain of plastic every lunchtime. Really pisses me of.

Now they are bringing in that plastic bag law however plastic bags are so thin nowadays and all the main supermarket s decompose in 2-5 years. But all this plastic packaging will not decompose for a long time.

Yes I know some will say its none of my business, but rubbish, wastefulness and landfill are my business IMO.

Rant over!

I think we could all do with considering our plastic consumption - fucking depressing. I doubt all the plastic gets recycled - probably land fill somewhere in Indonesia.

Walle is where we are heading. Earth just be one big dump.

BabyGanoush · 20/09/2015 14:35

OP

Having read the other thread, I think your real beef is with this person. You dislike them and anything they do might piss you off?

LovelyFriend · 20/09/2015 16:47

Gosh some people get very arsey, rude and angry when their consciences get pricked!

LovelyFriend · 20/09/2015 16:49

As for saying you can't be green if you have had children that is pretty high up on my list of "the cuntiest things I have read on MN"

Sparklingbrook · 20/09/2015 16:50

The OP has hidden their own thread. I think I will do the same.

PunkrockerGirl · 20/09/2015 17:01

She didn't help herself by starting another thread on pretty much the same subject, presumably because she didn't like the response she got on here Hmm

ilovesooty · 20/09/2015 17:36

No doubt she'll start another thread when it suits her and refuse to acknowledge she's unreasonable on that one too.

Par for the course.

kungpopanda · 20/09/2015 18:20

"my children and my children's children will still have all this plastic packaging littering the earth in their lifetimes "

Oh, so these are now purely rhetorical children, then, OP? The non-polluting kind.

XiCi · 20/09/2015 18:44

It does amuse me that there's some poor sod completely unaware he's being slagged off on an online forum for the heinous crime of having a bit of sushi for his lunch

MultiShirker · 20/09/2015 20:29

As for saying you can't be green if you have had children

It wasn't quite that: just that anyone born in the developed West puts a strain on the Earth's finite research of around 4 times that of anyone born in the developing world.

I think the point is that we ALL consume far more in the developed world than is our share, or that can be sustained. So it ill behoves anyone to be so unreasonably angry (the first post is rather unhinged) at a colleague's lunch choices.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 20:52

This pre-Greta thread hasn’t aged well.

@Sazzas, you were not being unreasonable. Grin

SteelRiver · 04/01/2020 20:55

Carry on with your own eco efforts and leave him to his dinner. You could maybe step up your own efforts to kind of cancel him out.

Vehivle · 04/01/2020 21:14

I feel sorry for your work colleague stuck in an office with a self-superior arse like you. I agree that waste is wrong, but if you cared that much - you'd be offering to take his rubbish home and recycle it there. Not just internally secretly loathe him and then slagging him off on an anonymous forum which usually is quite pro environmental action/climate change concern. I expect you thought you'd get tons of people agreeing with you. To me, that's just moral masturbation. Stop trying to just make yourself feel good/better than others - and take actual action if you're truly that concerned. Take it up with your company to start offering recycling options. Dont just blame it all on one man just trying to enjoy his bloody lunch.

EustaciaPieface · 04/01/2020 21:23

If you only have one colleague eating lunch in this way, then you’re incredibly lucky!

minimonkey11 · 04/01/2020 21:36

I agree we need to refuse, reduce, reuse etc etc but i work in the waste and recycling industry and this ‘the plastic ends up in the ocean’ and ‘it all ends up in landfill’ is wrong. The UK recycling rate is c. 50% and is reducing landfill and increasing waste to energy. There are many new technologies coming out to convert waste to fuel etc. We as a nation do not ‘dump plastic’ into the ocean. The cases of UK recycling that went to malaysia etc were not a good thing but there was a market for recycling in China and other places as generally a lot of the plastic came from there and it was a global economy. I do think that the proximity principle is a good one and we should manufacture and recycle close together in a closed loop. I just dont think the language used in this argument is useful- ‘dumped in the ocean’.

BrickTop999 · 04/01/2020 21:38

I’d spend my energy campaigning for China to get on board or face trade embargo’s than worry about my colleagues lunch tbh
