Merkel is responsible, Germany should take them

Merkel has idiotically encouraged millions of illegals to risk their lives getting to Europe, and then promptly shut the door on them. Now sensible countries like Hungary are having to bear the brunt. It's the most idiotic policy I've seen for quite some while.

Germany should pay. Germany should house them. And the EU rules on free movement of people should be torn up. I hope the AfD gets a massive boost at the expense of the CDU/CSU.

I think even someone as wet as Cameron could get Hungary, Croatia, et al to agree on making Germany bear the brunt after the problems caused by hordes of illegals at their borders over the last few days. I am sure the Greeks would be more than happy to oblige too.

shins
Talkinpeace, how come there are 20 million unemployed in Europe if we're in such desperate need of migrant workers?

In Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and to a lesser extent France, tightly restrictive labour laws make it so hard to fire people that nobody hires anybody.
also
in Greece and Spain and Italy, there is a significant grey economy of people who are working but cannot register as such for the reason above.
also
a lot of the indigenous unemployed in places like the UK have such poor skills that they cannot fill the jobs available.

longfingernails · 17/09/2015 21:55

It's not just an Abbott policy, it's a Coalition policy. Turnbull fully supports turning back the boats as far as I know. Even Labor under Gillard had to reintroduce the offshore processing centres.

I don't believe the majority are refugees anyway. Y'all might wanna take a look at this interesting article: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34270077?SThisFB - sorry I don't know how to do a link.

regardless of everything, I'm pretty fed up of switching on the news and hearing how migrants broke through police lines and stormed train lines/roads etc by sheer brute force. gangs of angry young men on the rampage does not bode well for anyone.

lacktoastandtolerance · 17/09/2015 21:55

Language is phenomenally important to focus on. The way you describe people has a fundamental impact on how they are perceived - and treated. Read through a few threads on this site about emotional abuse for some closer-to-home examples.

There isn't a simple solution. There isn't a single solution.

But remembering 'they' are HUMAN BEINGS is a fucking good place to start.

longfingernails · 17/09/2015 21:56

Malcolm Turnbull is even wetter than Cameron though, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he waters down a working immigration policy.

wonders when to add into the thread that I am a first generation economic migrant who has paid more in UK taxes than many British born

Dawndonnaagain · 17/09/2015 21:58

What's with the name-calling and swearing though?

  1. Trawl back through some of Longs other posts.
  2. We are discussing people, not 'illegals.
  3. No harm in calling out a cunt when they're being a cunt, and let's face it, he/she usually is.
  4. Lacktoast is absolutely right, language is important.
FlankShaftMcWap · 17/09/2015 21:58

I had a dream last week that MN installed a "like" button for posts. If I were in that dream now Lunchpack I would be liking the shit out of your last one Grin

I'm now going to shuffle away and hang my head at the fact I just admitted I actually have dreams about MN...

FlankShaftMcWap · 17/09/2015 21:59

Dammit. Your last one before banging your head on the wall.

Justanotherlurker · 17/09/2015 22:00

LET THEM IN AND LET THEM WORK

Slightly simplistic view, your presuming that it will not put pressure on the ~70-80% of the electorate that want immigration to be tackled.

Also I presume you have read this.

www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/16/refugee-crisis-hit-uk-working-class-powerless

I don't agree with the language OP used but merkel was pretty stupid with her announcement, and has excasberated the problem

longfingernails · 17/09/2015 22:01

lovelyconverse123 Yes, because they are illegals and most refuse to be registered in Eastern Europe, it is very easy to be sceptical about their Syrian status.

Here is some great investigative journalism on the topic:

I'm completely gobsmacked by Germany's saying "we'll take 500,000" one day, and the next day closing their borders. WTF did they expect to happen?

Germany are crazy though, is it still guilt from the Holocaust? Their working classes will be making their views known soon enough.

grisclair · 17/09/2015 22:01

OP, you are very much misinformed. Germany didn't stop taking in refugees at all when border controls were reintroduced. Border controls were only put in place to slow down the influx a little to make sure people can be registered properly when they enter the country. Germany has actually sent trains to Austria to pick up refugees there today.
I agree that Merkel was wrong to encourage refugees the way she did. But pretending Europe has nothing to do with it all like some countries do is just disgraceful.

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 17/09/2015 22:02

Look. The way I see it the left and right can both be right about this. Yes we need to open the borders and help people in crisis

But

Europe is in crisis and has been since before all the asylum seekers and migrants began crashing the borders off the back of Merkel's half arsed promises.

Europeans are struggling

European states cannot cope with their borders being absolutely swamped and having swathes of people storming across. They don't have the man power. They don't have the funds. They don't have the infrastructure. We need to be looking at practical solutions not navel gazing

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 17/09/2015 22:03

Grin I guessed so flank

ohmyeyebettymartin · 17/09/2015 22:03

"wonders when to add into the thread that I am a first generation economic migrant who has paid more in UK taxes than many British born"

Same here Ta1kinPeace, though to another country than the UK.

But I'm white and a Westerner, innit, so people approve of me.

Ta1kinPeace · 17/09/2015 22:04

Let them in and let them work is not something I thought up ....
www.economist.com/news/leaders/21662547-bigger-welcome-mat-would-be-europes-own-interest-let-them-and-let-them-earn

There is no evidence that immigration hits the wages of other than the utterly unskilled (who often did not have wages anyway)

And if the people of Western Europe want carers and taxpayers to reduce our pension shortfall, either the rich needed to breed like rabbits 15 years ago, or we need immigrants.

Dawndonnaagain · 17/09/2015 22:05

Oi, long, investigative journalism and The Daily Mail.
Oxymoron.

TiredButFineODFOJ · 17/09/2015 22:05

Yeah why is it men fighting at the borders? Because the women and children are sat off to the side whilst the men fight.
Why are they all well dressed? because people have given them clothes to wear.
Why did Germany encourage this? They wanted to help. Then they were overwhelmed. They asked other EU countries to accept quotas and they won't.
How did Australia keep boat refugees out? They send the boats to holding camps on nearby islands. There are less arriving in mainland Australia, hilarious when you consider Australia didn't even recognise indigenous people as humans until the 80's.

Dawndonnaagain · 17/09/2015 22:05

My (illegal, initially) Grandmother was mayor of a large London Borough for a good few years.

ohmyeyebettymartin · 17/09/2015 22:07

hilarious when you consider Australia didn't even recognise indigenous people as humans until the 80's

That would be 1967 actually.

Still unacceptable, obvs, but not quite as bad as you're making out.

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 17/09/2015 22:07

We can all play 'my ancestor came from..." all British people can. We are an island nation built on immigration

Doesn't help with practical solutions to the current issues in eastern Europe though.

ohmyeyebettymartin · 17/09/2015 22:09

They send the boats to holding camps on nearby islands.

Where all sorts of abuse, including child sexual abuse, are rife and employees are banned from disclosing it.

FlankShaftMcWap · 17/09/2015 22:10

That's a relief Lunchpack didn't want you to think I was applauding you giving yourself concussion Grin
