to think Corbyn is dead in the water

Yes he's a nice chap with a nice beard, but silliness (principled though it might be) like refusing to sing the national anthem is not going to endear him to more than a small minority of the population.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34263447

And the signs are that he intends to be the gift that keeps on giving, in terms of pointless gestures that don't really achieve anything but make him a mega-target for the right-wing press.

Either he gets turfed out before the next GE, or he surpasses Michael Foot as the biggest loser in Labour's history.

I actually think the privy council vow shows (if they didn't alter it for him Grin )that he is actually capable of putting his own views aside momentarily when it is essential.

I think it's a bit of an overeation from the media (shock horror) and that if he had half heartedly mumbled the words it would have been an insult and he would have been branded a hypocrite.

Hellocampers · 16/09/2015 11:27

Look he's a man who has strong and let's face it con traversal views.

Whatever we mumsnetters think here it's inconceivable that the general electorate will vote for a prime minister that sings 'the Red Flag' but won't sign 'the national anthem'

To say anything else is to believe in pink fairies and gold at the end of the rainbow.

I do think there is a belief on mumsnet that the general public are all stupid and manipulated by the Tory press. I think that's bollocks actually.

The press don't set public opinion they feed on it. They help fester what was already festering like immigration which inevitable ended in the hapless Gordon Brown being hopelessly out of touch with the mood if the country.

If the Labour Party ever want to see power again then they must start to grow up and realise that most people are generally middle of the road when it comes to politics here.

That's why Tony was so successful and Foot/Kinnock failed spectaculaly.

People don't like rabid left or right wingers. They disturb people.

And at the end of the day it's the economy stupid. The electorate have to trust the government with the economy or nothing gets funded.

They won't trust Corbyn. It's as simple as that.

I voted for Yvette as the best of a bad bunch. Shame as I think Harriet would have beaten David at the next election but not to be.

I hear youhello.

I voted for Cooper. Not because I think she's great. I don't. But of the candidates I thought she stood a better chance than the others of keeping things together.

She did after all increase her majority in a seat where UKIP is ripe to make headway.

Donotknowhownottomind · 16/09/2015 11:32

Agreed but some of the measures being taken by the Tories when unfettered by the LibDems are looking pretty rabidly right wing at the moment - here's hoping there's a backlash against these too.

NotSoHappyBeet · 16/09/2015 11:34

That's why I tended to avoid politics Grin

Is that all it takes? That bloke doesn't believe in exactly the same things as I do so no one will vote for him.

What's ironic is I've read people slagging him off for not singing something he doesn't believe in and they do, because they think it insults the men who died fighting....so that amoung other things we could still have free speech and will in this country.

Mad.

Also as an aside, is anyone else a bit disgusted with the PLP? JC was democratically elected but democracy only counts if you vote the way most MPs want you to apparently.

Shutthatdoor · 16/09/2015 11:37

On that though JC has no room to talk. He regularly went against the 'elected leader'

Hellocampers · 16/09/2015 11:38

Exactly and to defeat the Tories and actually stop the cuts we needed to look electable. We don't.

NotSo he's just said he will sing the lyrics in future.

Brilliant. Fudge and confusion on day 4.

I weep for labour I really do. Why can't we learn.

Yes completely disgusted. Am really nervous about Prime Minister's Questions due to start in 20 minutes.

Have also noticed that the people who voted for JC are sometimes referred to as activists rather than voters Hmm.

It was a fashionable thing to say but I think now, people realize its lazy and ignorant.

After all I think most press except the Morning Star derided Corybyn and yet...here he is!

autumnintheair · 16/09/2015 11:55

Guardian reporting that from now on Corbyn will sing the national anthem

Grin ahhh so thats the first crumble of these huge principles Sad Hmm

wonkylegs · 16/09/2015 11:56

The press don't set public opinion they feed it ... I'd love to believe that but unfortunatly I don't think that's quite the truth, the recent insights into the way the modern media works show that although this is how the press should operate it is very different to the way they actually do. They often follow the political agenda of their ownership. This is an international problem not a british one but is very prevalent.

Asimovbuff · 16/09/2015 12:10

Any truly clever politician would have sung it

He comes across as an awkward social misfit

shamre really as I had quite high hopes for him, I imagine he'll be gone by xmas

My Favourite tweet about this whole issue has been

" jaydeepee ??@reddeviljp 4h4 hours ago

The Mail and Torygraph owners were so angry at Jeremy Corbyn's insult to their patriotism they very nearly gave up their Non-Dom tax status."

He is brilliant on PQT! He asked for a different approach at PQT - less theatrical, and then proceeded to ask questions sent to him by the public.

I love him Smile

Inkanta · 16/09/2015 12:26

And wearing a new smart suit and gold tie!

Shutthatdoor · 16/09/2015 12:28

I love him

Hmm
SheGotAllDaMoves · 16/09/2015 12:39

He was fine.

I suspect those wanting the firebrand taking DC to task will be disappointed.

He read out some questions sent in to him by the public. Which DC dispatched fairly swiftly.
