To think a portion of fruit and veg isn't that big

Constantly people say how the portion of fruit or veg needed is big and people don't often get one in a meal. I've just created a dish with at least four portions with my tomato pasta lunch.

200g of tomatoes
2 large onions
80g button mushrooms
100 mung bean fettuccine

Then also but not enough for a portion
2 cloves of garlic
Bunch of basil
1 tbps tumeric
1 TSP Kayne pepper
A pinch off kelp
Handful of k olives

Onions were saluted in water too, no fat here. All this fits in one bowl and was just right for my lunch.

Sorry didn't mean to offend. I just get fed up with the constant carping that anyone who eats a mainly plant diet spends their life on the loo. It is what we are meant to eat fgs.

This thread has made me laugh so much. Don't even know why I opened it but vey glad I did. Particular applause for 'Gwyneth, is that you?' GrinGrinGrin

I've never even seen a real life mung

"I was beginning to wonder if bread had some kind of health draining properties that only SW knew about"

Lol, yep...bread is that evil...

Nah, it's just about making it easier to lose weight. It includes a little portion of Wholemeal bread (or high fibre cereals or whatever) and milk and cheese because they should be part of a balanced diet and then that's what you increase when you no longer need to lose weight because they're a healthier way of adding in calories.

So it's not that bread is evil, it's just that it's not great for losing weight.

Rufusgy · 14/09/2015 19:02

Yep the kelp is for flavour. A bit of unami (sp?).

That was my portion, I think about 650 calories ish but life is too short to count them all up.

MN is a bit ridiculous with that, anyone that has more than two veg a meal must be exploding... Apart from if your accustomed to eating veg! France recommend 10 a day.

It looks like there's yellow pepper in your bowl, but you don't mention it.

Hmmm.

ilovesooty · 14/09/2015 19:19

It might be photoshopped anyway.

00100001 · 14/09/2015 19:24

where do you get your fettucne from OP?

BabyGanoush · 14/09/2015 19:24

no that looks like a real pic to me.

Also a normal portion to me, but I am 6ft and eat around 2500 a day

PseudoBadger · 14/09/2015 19:24

I have that rug.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/09/2015 20:00

The op would probably eat the rug so long as it was clean

SuburbanRhonda · 14/09/2015 20:03

On the subject of the rug, I did wonder whether the OP's table wasn't big enough for her lunch, hence why she had to put it on the floor Grin

PseudoBadger · 14/09/2015 20:15

That's actually one of those dishes you cook a massive paella in Grin

Thelushinthepub · 14/09/2015 20:15

The yellow is onion zebra. Dur, there are 2 WHOLE ONIONS in there

I thought the same so zoomed in

Snozberry · 14/09/2015 20:20

Why would she use a pepper when she could use a second onion. She missed a trick by using olives instead of a third onion.

TheCrowFromBelow · 14/09/2015 20:20

one tablespoon of turmeric would make it inedible for a single portion, surely?

Bakeoffcake · 14/09/2015 20:22

Do you mind if I ask how many onions you used OP?

Grin
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/09/2015 20:29

OP I also would like to know where you got your fettucine - it sounds really good :) Not sure about the turmeric in that combo, but other than that sounds like a lovely meal...

giraffesCantDoThat · 14/09/2015 20:36

Snozberry laughed so har at your onion suggestion

whois · 14/09/2015 20:46

Sauté in water? Ie boiled onion??

Well I had a much nicer lunch than you from the work salad bar. Carrots, beetroot, peas, rocket, orange slices - all big enough for a portion. Sweet potato and peppers not enough for a portion. Seeds and a big spoon of chickpeas.

For dinner I have had cherry tomatoes, fennel, caugette, peppers and mushrooms roasted in the oven (all a portion) with ras Al hanout served with couscous and a portion of diced cucumber and some diced feta and a big squeeze of lemon.

#waymoresmugthanyou

I generally get salad at lunch as it's an easy way to tick off a 'rainbow plate' without having to buy and chop and grate a million types of veg. Unless there is a really tasty hot option :-)

whois · 14/09/2015 20:48

Tomorrow I may have nandos or pizza for tea #cantbetoosmug

whois · 14/09/2015 20:57

OMG now I'm having a portion of blueberries with some natural yog. I'm on fire for fruit and veg portions today!

I make that 2 fruit and 9 veh

TheSpottedZebra · 14/09/2015 21:15

A couple of onions with that, whois and you'll be winning.
Spring onions if you want it to be puddingy.

Spring onions if you want it to be puddingy

Oh goodness you could write a cookery book with lovely ideas like that!

liletsthepink · 14/09/2015 22:20

I had something similar today except I'm an unclean (probably filthy) eater. I had fresh egg pasta (from a packet), tomato sauce (fresh from a jar) and a ton of full fat cheese grated on top. Good luck with your mung beans, kelp and onions, OP.

I'm off to open a packet of biscuits now
