Brushing teeth in the shower...

Flingingmelon · 14/09/2015 08:41

I'm teaching DS he can brush his teeth in the shower, as my mum taught me. It all goes down the plug hole, the head gets cleaned regularly, no problems.

DH found out and went nuts. He says it's disgusting as disgusting as the bathroom sink after he's brushed his?
In the interests of household harmony I know I need to stop.

But more importantly, who's right?

I brush my teeth in the shower, gives me two minutes of brushing whilst I leave my conditioner on. There's nothing wrong with it at all, strange it's seen as any more "disgusting" than brushing them over the sink......

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2015 12:23

Koala there's a thread around about drinking a cup of tea in the bathroom if you're interested. Grin

BathshebaDarkstone · 14/09/2015 12:25

I think it's okay as long as he doesn't swallow the water, but that's the same as if it was at the bathroom sink. Only the cold tap in the kitchen is treated. Smile

diddl · 14/09/2015 12:25

"gives me two minutes of brushing whilst I leave my conditioner on."

But surely you don't leave the water running for that time?

SurlyCue · 14/09/2015 12:28

Wow! I am really amazed people think its disgusting! Why? Confused

I love doing my teeth in the shower i do it while my conditioner is soaking in. I feel like im getting all my hygiene done in a one stop shop. Toothbrush and toothpaste are stored in the cupboard at the end of the bath.

OfficeGirl1969 · 14/09/2015 12:28

"But surely you don't leave the water running for that time?" I'm standing in the shower, so yes the water's running whilst I brush my teeth....

SurlyCue · 14/09/2015 12:30

Its probably actually cleaner than doing it at a sink. Any 'spray' gets washed away with shower water rather than splattered all over the sink and mirror and floor.

squoosh · 14/09/2015 12:34

Very strange thing to go nuts over. Is he normally this odd?

Who could possibly give a monkey's where in the bathroom someone brushes their teeth? Confused

Iggly · 14/09/2015 12:38

I've never thought to do this.... Now I'm tempted.

Sounds fine to me.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/09/2015 12:39

I do this in the shower after reading hints for saving time...

It can sometimes be a balancing act if say you stupidly try to do 2 things at once - eg face wash and tooth brush (electric) so I do 1 at a time now.

my teeth are also sensitive so warm/tepid water is better than ice cold... I also use a flosser stick to floss every morning - that is a bit grim if sometimes blood is there... but it all gets rinsed down the same plug hole and saves water!

I don't have kids either so call me lazy if you like...!

SuperFlyHigh · 14/09/2015 12:41

Diddl - shock horror yes I do leave the shower running whilst I condition my hair (even though your comment wasn't aimed at me). How many people leave taps running when brushing their teeth?!

Mrsmorton · 14/09/2015 12:47

I take the head off, rinse it all thoroughly and then leave it to dry on the shelf thing in the shower.

You're not supposed to rinse after brushing. The fluoride in the toothpaste needs to be in contact with your teeth for as long as possible. MNers always ask what about the food bits in their mouth. Firstly, most adults don't accumulate food particles because their tongue and cheek muscles have a significant cleaning action and secondly, you spit any "debris" out. Just don't rinse afterwards. Not with water or mouthwash.

Most mouthwash is shite anyway.

diddl · 14/09/2015 13:41

"How many people leave taps running when brushing their teeth?!"

I don't know, do you?

All I know is that no one in this house does.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2015 13:44

I have had to remind DS on occasion not to keep the tap running while doing his teeth. Angry

MaidOfStars · 14/09/2015 13:52

I don't leave the tap running, nor does my husband. I quite often brush my teeth away from the sink.

JawannaDrink · 14/09/2015 14:32

Only on mn could cleaning part of yourself be described as grim and disgusting.
Fucking weirdos.

boobubsmum · 14/09/2015 14:36

it's never crossed my mind to brush my teeth in the shower! I'm going to do it tomorrow morning, anything for an extra couple of minutes!

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2015 14:38

YY Jawanna I think it's best to not care where people clean their teeth just be glad that they do mostly.
People are cleaning themselves and their teeth and that can only be a good thing.

OfficeGirl1969 · 14/09/2015 18:01

I have met many people over the years who I would have happily tolerated brushing their teeth at the sink, in the shower or under the bloody hose, if only they'd bloody brush them!!! There are some manky nuggets out there....just be careful we're all being nice and clean, however we're doing it! Wink

redredblue · 14/09/2015 18:28

I brush mine in the shower.
Makes me brush them a lot more thoroughly.
I don't see the issue. All the water ends up in the same place doesn't it?

Narp · 14/09/2015 18:30

Lordy, better not tell him he can wee in the shower

bgottalent · 14/09/2015 18:37

I've never thought of brushing teeth in the shower but don't see why it should be a problem

FaceFullOfFilleronthe45 · 14/09/2015 18:37

Surely you use far more water than is necessary by brushing in the shower? You can't wash your body and brush your teeth at the same time so why use the full force of the shower for the two minutes it takes, rather than just using the basin tap that can be can be turned on and off as needed to rinse the brush?

I don't think it's disgusting exactly, just inefficient, unnecessary and a bit weird.

ArendelleQueen · 14/09/2015 19:03

I don't know why but the idea turns me off.

TheCatsMother99 · 14/09/2015 19:16

I've NEVER heard of anyone brushing their teeth in the bath or shower & the thought of it makes me want to puke.... Spit in your bath and shower, ewwwwww
