Brushing teeth in the shower...

Flingingmelon · 14/09/2015 08:41

I'm teaching DS he can brush his teeth in the shower, as my mum taught me. It all goes down the plug hole, the head gets cleaned regularly, no problems.

DH found out and went nuts. He says it's disgusting as disgusting as the bathroom sink after he's brushed his?
In the interests of household harmony I know I need to stop.

But more importantly, who's right?

Hmm

Cats have you read the thread? Hmm Puke? Really?

Flingingmelon · 14/09/2015 19:54

Blimey, I didn't think this thread would get so long.

Everyone is allowed one mad obsession and this is DH's.

I'm stupidly pleased that although DS and I may have to go underground, there are others out there taking up their toothbrushes Grin

does NOBODY have a clue about the basic workings of their house? It is sod all to do with the plugs or where the spit goes.

some houses are set up so that all taps except the kitchen one are fed from a cold water tank in the attic. This provides a reserve but the water in that tank has been standing, the tank is probably not that clean and there may even be a couple of dead animals in it if there's no lid.

some houses are set up so that all taps are fed from the mains. (In which case you are stuffed if the water goes off).

if your house is set up as the former, you shouldn't drink water from anywhere except the mains tap. That said, most of us have always cleaned our teeth at the bathroom sink and lived to tell the tale. But when did you last check for dead things in the tank, if you have a tank?

captainproton · 14/09/2015 19:56

I guess it depends on the temperature of the water. Unless your shower gets really hot then I would think the shower head is prone to mould/Bacteria. Also The cold/hot water supply to most bathrooms is not plumbed direct from mains and comes from your water tank in the loft and your hot water tank (unless a combi boiler).

But then you are not supposed to rinse anyway so perhaps most people are happy to keep things as is.

Never thought of brushing teeth in the shower

DD1 brushes her teeth in the bath, but spits in a bucket.

Cliffdiver · 14/09/2015 20:03

^ a mini toy bucket, that is - I don't make her sit there holding a huge metal pail Grin

DieSchottin93 · 14/09/2015 20:22

I couldn't brush my teeth in the shower, purely because I can't stand using warm/hot water to do so It just feels wrong somehow

5madthings · 14/09/2015 20:28

We don't have a water tank in the loft. Combining boiler and so water is direct from mains. But yes I remember my parents saying about the tank in loft when I was a kid. But if you have a water tank then all bathroom taps will use that? Anyway I don't swallow when I clean my teeth or rinse my mouth with water it just toothbrush and paste.

BoyScout · 14/09/2015 20:33

Can't get my head round cleaning teeth with warm water. Nothing else about it bothers me.

5madthings · 14/09/2015 20:34

And yes when water was cut off the other year we were stuffed which is a pita.

Oysterbabe · 14/09/2015 20:38

Warm water that's been sat around in boilers is not drinking water and shouldn't be used to rinse your mouth. It's disgusting.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2015 20:41

Oyster you don't drink it. Confused And as said upthread ^^you shouldn't rinse.

I don't brush my teeth with the warm water I just wet my brush first under the shower water that doesn't come from a hot water tank. Then I put paste on and brush.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 14/09/2015 20:45

Slightly off topic but you do know that you're not supposed to rinse your mouth after brushing don't you? Just spit out the foam and away you go. This gives your teeth longer contact with the fluoride and the antibacterial components. I stopped rinsing years ago. And for what it's worth I always brush mine in the shower so I can spend longer under the hot water.

5madthings · 14/09/2015 20:57

We have an electric shower that heats it's own water, so not the boiler but you don't drink water or rinse when cleaning teeth anyway, or I don't...just toothbrush, paste clean teeth, spit. Clean toothbrush after and give it a quick rinse before.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2015 21:00

Exactly 5. We have an electric shower too, and it heats itself.

Breast that was mentioned upthread, definitely no rinsing.

Occasionally I will shove tooth brushes at dc if they are in the bath and THAT makes me feel uncomfortable, but I don't do it all the time, and its just easier sometimes. I suppose as they are sat in the spit, albeit briefly.

But shower Confused cant see the issue.

As an aside what IS horrific is people who puke in the sink or bath when there is a loo in the room. I had this lots with room mates at uni and NEVER understood it, forcing chunks of sick into the plug holes, then sitting in the bend smelling Shock why Shock when could all go down the loo.
