To complain about lidl girl rolling her eyes at me twice

I usually only pop in for a few things. But did a huge shop because of a voucher.

When it came to paying she mumbled "would you like a free sticky toy" I could hardly hear this, asked her to repeat it politely. Then I said sorry what is that, she rolled her eyes at me, turned around rolled her eyes at a colleague and said "its a toy when you spend over 10". I get she must get that a lot, but if she didn't mumble or they had signs up about this promotion it wouldn't confuse people. I've never heard of it before.

I had a similar experience last weekend, big shop at Lidl, asked if I wanted a toy, didn't know what the check out guy was talking about and said "I don't know, what's that, and why". He laughed pleasantly, smiled, looked me in the eye and explained you get a free sticky toy when you spend over £10 and got one from under the counter to show me. I said sure and got a bag of silly sticky toys. Happy days as was having a kids party that weekend and I put them in the party bags as an extra.

Absolutely no need for her to be rude, not sure I would complain to her management, but I might have been tempted in that situation to say something to her about how rude it is to roll your eyes and treat me like a moron.

Really don't understand why being on a low wage or in a dull job is an excuse for rudeness. Guess she won't be moving onto anything better in the near future with that attitude.

She must have to say that to 90% of customers, I am sure 90% of people spend more than £10, and I expect she hates it, perhaps the eye rolling was at the annoyance of the free sticky toy

Actually, as title of this thread specifies a girl then I think that it is worth having a tactful word with a supervisor.

Yes, you're annoyed, but the bigger picture here is that someone very young is embarking on employment and is lacking the skills which will take her out of this first job. You have no idea how alert/diligent the supervisor is, nor whether they really have time for staff development. But if a customer says they think that the young cashier needs help, then they might just rise to it.

And that could make all the difference to this girl. And I'd want my DD helped at the outset of her career.

I hate when this happens. My hearing is pretty bad and I wear a hearing aid in one ear and my DD often repeats what the shop assistant or whoever has said to me if she is with me. I just want the ground to swallow me up. I think everyone should have a bit more understanding and patience and tbh I would've been pretty pissed off.

We went to Lidl in Scotland recently and they are doing this awesome card thing where you get £5 off a £25 shop. You can't use the card in England but it is well worth doing a two person shop like somebody up thread said to get the full value of it. (we also got the sticky toy things, it was in Fort William, the girl there was lovely) I shop in Lidl a lot and I think the staff clearly work pretty hard. They are all over the place. It is not the same experience as shopping in Tesco as you have to catch your shopping at the end and put it in your trolley as fast as possible. It should be an olympic sport, its quite exciting yes I need to get out more!

God I'd hate to work in a customer complaints department now that the internet is so popular.

I imagine back when people had to either complain in person, or compose a written letter, buy a stamp and post that letter, more complaints were actually worth reading.

Now that people can run home and hide behind a keyboard, they probably get all manner of tell tales complaining that a member of staff 'tutted', 'sneered', scanned the items 'too fast', scanned the items 'too slowly', sniffed, farted or scratched a bollock.

I bet the customer complaints staff's eyes, are rolling right out of their heads most days.

Edith, you do realise that if someone reported your daughter to a manager for eye rolling, very likely all she would get is a de-moralising talking to. Perhaps even a verbal warning. Certain supermarkets have a high turn over of staff, and there's a good reason for that. The higher up staff can be as difficult as some customers. No one cares for your 'career', they expect you won't last past Christmas. So managers don't care for their staff, and staff end up passing that attitude down again.

Aldi and Lidl staff gets paid more than I do as an HCA on a busy ward.

I can't be rude to people. Even if I'm stressed as I'm getting to the end of a 12 hour shift and a patient has done nothing but call me for 12 hours to ask the same question. I didn't realise that because I was in a low paid job it's ok to be rude.

I have to repeat myself hundreds of times a day. And yes, at times I want to roll my eyes and even scream. But I don't, because it's my job.

I wouldn't complain OP but I wouldn't excuse her behaviour because her pay is low and her work conditions not always great.

Yes, it was rude. I'd just chalk it up to poor social skills on her part. I live in East London, and a lot of the young people working in service positions seem to be frightened to make eye contact or speak clearly. I feel like there is some sort of cultural gap between us. I get the feeling they would be truly uncomfortable to look me straight in the eye and speak clearly.

Shame.

I do wonder how they will get on in life if they don't learn how to do this.

Some amazing job martyrs on here. I knew someone who worked in food, was asked if the pork they sold was Halal. You manage not to roll your eyes at that level of stupid, then you're a saint

The staff in my Lidl are lovely. When the checkout operator offered me one of those toys with the suckers, she sweetly listened to my explanation that I had just paid £700 to have one of them removed from my cat's bowel without looking at me like I was a sad cat lady who was oversharing with the checkout staff.

Sorry did you asked her to repeat it politely or politely ask her to repeat it? Because if it was the first you were rude and if it was the latter she is.

However I would have called her on it at the time. Politely of course. Something like "there's really no need to be quite so rude. I was only asking".

But I am bolshy fearless.

I worked minimum wage jobs all through college, so I've usually lots of sympathy for hassled checkout staff. You cannot be rude to people - even if you are pissed off with them. And not even if you have to repeat this ridiculous shit about promotional stuff a zillion times a day - I used to be doing that, so I know how annoying it is!

So yeah, I'd have mentioned it to her or her manager. If she got a bollocking for it, then that is her lookout - maybe she will learn from it.

I wouldn't complain, personally.
If I'm in a discount or cheap shop I only expect minimal customer service (I'm looking at you, 99p shop) and anything above that is a bonus.

Eye rolling is rude. The assistant was rude.

A waitress in Cafe Rouge once rolled her eyes when I said that we had a voucher towards our meal (note - I'd told her this before we even ordered so it's not as though she had to go and re-do the bill or anything). She never got a tip I can tell you that!

I've never been back there either as the food was crap too!
